The best thing about this thread is we can come back to it in a years time to quote posts. You'd think we are buying a Championship player from some of the posts here.

Before this season I've watched Chelsea a bunch of times and always thought we could use a player like Mount. There were even times I thought I'd have him ahead of Bruno, and in the long run I still think this might be true.

I like this because he's at the right age, PL proven and is as versatile as it gets. The fact that he isn't the finished article and EtH can work with him to mould him into an even better creative player excites me.
Yeah hopefully some eggs on faces

Am I off in thinking ETH sees Mount as a Premier League proven equivalent of what Van de Beek did for his Ajax side?

Even managers like Pep and Arteta who play a 4-3-3 that is really a 3-2-4-1 in possession don't play with two real attacking midfielders at the top of their midfield box like Bruno and Mount.
You need more than just 11 players in a squad over the course of the season. We don’t have another player who can play in #10 role besides Bruno. ETH has unsuccessfully tried playing Sabitzer, Fred, McTominay, Sancho and Wout Werghorst in that position. Bruno can’t play every game and if you plan to compete with City, you need to stop thinking in terms of A team and B team. Besides, creative players always give you options to change dynamics within the game. Bruno and Mount will provide cover and competition for each other but they can definitely play in the same team either both centrally or one central and the other out wide.

Great news, because if we're willing to spend that fee for Mount then we have serious budget this window.

I don't have doubts on his quality, he's good player, but I'm not sure about this profile of attacking midfielder that will play deeper. We're doing it again.

How much are we paying for him?

Its obvious SJR is winning the bid, it smacks me as Ratcliffe budget signing.

Why are we after players who don't improve our starting 11, we need a quality ball playing midfielder and we are linked with this? :(

Some sense in this thread. Will quote it just that it doesnt go unnoticed.

Better passer, better engine, better vision, better tackler, can run a game. Mount may be very good but feels a bit of a luxury given what we need in midfield.
Im not actually sure McAllister is all that. He’s a bit of a steady Eddie.

Assuming that the price won't be too high (30-40mil at most....), then this is a good buy that upgrades our squad, and should hopefully mean we can replace Fred with him competing with Eriksen for the no. 8 position and able to replace Bruno when need be.

Other, more preferable targets (e.g. Caicedo) would cost over 70 mil, and we just don't have that sort of money right now.

Wow. McAllister, Caicedo, Bellingham all moving in the summer and we go for this guy. Hope the fee is around 20 mils
We never have a chance with Bellingham. McAllister is Liverpool bound. Caicedo though would worth the pursue but I suspect he won’t come cheap. Point is, we need to reserve larger part of our funds for forward. If Mount comes cheap it would be a steal.

Just realised he got double digits for both goals and assists in the Premier League last year. By contrast zero of our players have done that this year. Pretty impressive in fairness, which shows he can perform in a functioning side.

I’m not his biggest fan but I can see the logic in the signing, especially with the homegrown quota.

Yet some here are treating him like a garbage player.

It's not that. We need players in a different profile and who will improve our first 11. Mount is not an improvement on Bruno or Rashford on the left. He is not similar to a De Jong profile either. Seems like the Donny signing when we were crying out for a DM.

Debatable. Mount's track record is actually better than Mac's - up to this season where Mount was playing for a graveyard of a club. I think they're on a similar level actually. Will probably cost a similar amount too.

Yeah, he's a good age as well. Whilst he probably wont consistently put up peak Eriksen numbers creatively he certainly has some quality there and he has much better defensive output. My only reservation is that neither he nor Casemiro can really dominate possession.

Rashford? Why would we need an improvement on Rashford? He's a player who can jump in instead of Bruno as a number 10 or slip right in the lineup instead of Eriksen. I think ETH is going for functional midfielders, not pure DMs or playmakers, so we'll probably sign one more midfield who can be a Casemiro deputy. Also with ETH managing him I can see him improving our first 11.

Better than our current squad depth options so an improvement. The fee is what bothers me most especially if we are relying on outgoings before we can spend more.

The optimistic part of me wants to believe that this is an indication that the takeover is done.

I don't believe it's indicative of anything our budget before outgoings would have been 100-150 m , it's just that most are bit underwhelmed with Mount pursuit and are bit reluctant to accept that he actually is our primary midfield target and we are prioritising him ahead of others .

Considering that all the noise about our transfer priority was Striker and the Midfielder , it actually make sense to get him in early and then focus on Kane with rest of our budget and based on outgoings strengthen the other positions .

Yeah his stats are quite good when you think about how rubbish Chelsea have been. While Mount is not a player I have ever been impressed by, I trust Ten Hags judgement.

I would be wanting a GK and ST before we even look at midfielders. That said, if he is cheap then this is a good deal.

Strange how little he is rated on here. I don’t think he is world class, but a solid player as a #8 for sure.

I think the hope/expectation was that the profile of player we'd be after was that of a tempo setter that keeps us in possession and leans towards being a playmaker. Mount isn't that and is sort of similar to Bruno so it's a surprise.

This Mason Mount BS has to stop! ETH clearly wants him asap. Very good player, integral part of Chelsea’s team when they won the CL, 2x chelsea player of the year, england international. Chelsea want him to stay, Liverpool and Arsenal want him BUT it seems he wants to join us. Still young, energetic, tactically intelligent.… but seems like he is not a fancy name!!

Someone used the word boring to describe it. I think that is the measure a lot of people judge signings by

I guess I have to get used to he idea. Just hoe the fee is not too high. Fear we will be getting rinsed for a fairly average player.

Mount is not slow at all, much faster than Mata ever was. He is not an 8 either, doesn't have the defensive awareness and positioning of a natural central midfielder. He is an attacker who plays behind the striker or off of either wing, and his defensive abilities come from pressing from the front.

ten Hag obviously has a plan for him as he loved Mount when he was at Vitesse.
I find this very confusing. Unless ten Hag sees in Mount a player that can be trusted deeper and alongside Bruno?

We really hate English players on this forum enit. Never read so many pointless excuses.

The manager likes him - well he’s not always right is he.

Chelsea player of the year twice - so why they want rid? Probably the proper Chels fans voting for him

He’s good off the ball - I need tech.. why aren’t we after tech. We need someone who can offer us what Paul Pogba has:smirk:

Can we just admit we are all semi selfish and just want to club to do what we want. If we signed Caicedo we would all be happy and Caicedo’s tech level on the eye is very average.

Bruno is the only player to do it since Wazza for the record

Mount had his most productive season as a left sided attacker as far as I know. So we are now going to sign him to play in a position he has not played or shown much in? Is that the best use of our resources when we have other critical requirements. Seems a square peg for a round hole again unless he is only going to deputize for Bruno (who plays 95% of matches anyway).

If we need a replacement for Eriken, we need to look elsewhere.

Could be the plan to drop Bruno a bit deeper like he did sometimes this season.

Don't think his valuation should be anywhere near 60mil though.

Chatting to a Chelsea fan and they said he is a very good at pressing and ball progression.
But he seemed to be sitting on the bench quite regularly for them.

I think when you look at a combination of factors, pressure of United, first season in PL and relative impact to our side, Antony has taken ownership of the RW to the point where I don’t worry about having a balanced wide attack. Alone he won’t suddenly make us win the league but he absolutely raised the floor of our attack and I also believe has room to raise the ceiling of this teams ability overall.

He drives us forward more than an Olise could in my view. Olise is excellent at defensive wide play but isn’t the player to carry a side forward and sustain attacks which is what our wings have been lacking. All others mentioned just aren’t at his level in my view. There is a reason they are at mid to low level PL sides.

One of our biggest issues over the last few seasons was complete imbalance of attack. It was LW or bust. We lacked effective progression on our right side for years and now we have it. To the point where even AWB has started to understand the role and space he needs to occupy too. I think ETH having a Antony has helped fast track this as it’s one less player to worry about explaining the positional structure to.

I also did extensive looks into the market in the summer before signing him and as an avid Eredivise watcher was fully aware of the potential and talent Antony had shown not only in the league but also in Europe which often gets forgotten here.

Antony isn’t the best player in the world but I’d genuinely say that as left footed RWs go he has the potential to be one of the best in the coming years. His mentality, skill and ability to take on board instruction with a desire to improve makes him a valuable asset. One that we paid highly for as there was a dearth of available options that had his skill set. Something compounded for us by the Greenwood situation too.
You have very "weighted" view on Antony, I respect that. I agree about the balance he brings, BUT I've seen us doing well with Bruno and even Sancho recently on right wing. Antony keeps width and helps us to keep the ball in central areas and around the box, he's very good at that. However, he is the least likely to produce something (goal/assist) from all the options that can play RW at our club. This is a fact supported by stats and "eye test" so there's very little debate here.

I like front 3 to be attacking players and Antony is more of a midfielder in terms of his attributes. For that reason I'd say I'd prefer Olise and probably a few more from the list mentioned before over Antony, who I simply don't rate as an attacking threat. His biggest problem in my opinion is not decision making, it's very poor passing ability (and I'm not even talking about his right foot). He knows it isn't good and this drives his decision making. He clearly feels much more comfortable going for a shot (I have no problem with his shooting).

He has the right mentality like I mentioned before, I trust he won't be bothered by failure and enjoys physicality of the league (contrary to Sancho), but in terms of ability I just don't rate him that high to pursue him for anything more than what was his market value at the time we bought him (30-40m).

There's another interesting point if we really needed to push for left footed right winger, because again I'd argue we looked most threatening with right footed Bruno on right wing and recently Sancho created more chances in two games than Antony whole season.
