I think when you look at a combination of factors, pressure of United, first season in PL and relative impact to our side, Antony has taken ownership of the RW to the point where I don’t worry about having a balanced wide attack. Alone he won’t suddenly make us win the league but he absolutely raised the floor of our attack and I also believe has room to raise the ceiling of this teams ability overall.
He drives us forward more than an Olise could in my view. Olise is excellent at defensive wide play but isn’t the player to carry a side forward and sustain attacks which is what our wings have been lacking. All others mentioned just aren’t at his level in my view. There is a reason they are at mid to low level PL sides.
One of our biggest issues over the last few seasons was complete imbalance of attack. It was LW or bust. We lacked effective progression on our right side for years and now we have it. To the point where even AWB has started to understand the role and space he needs to occupy too. I think ETH having a Antony has helped fast track this as it’s one less player to worry about explaining the positional structure to.
I also did extensive looks into the market in the summer before signing him and as an avid Eredivise watcher was fully aware of the potential and talent Antony had shown not only in the league but also in Europe which often gets forgotten here.
Antony isn’t the best player in the world but I’d genuinely say that as left footed RWs go he has the potential to be one of the best in the coming years. His mentality, skill and ability to take on board instruction with a desire to improve makes him a valuable asset. One that we paid highly for as there was a dearth of available options that had his skill set. Something compounded for us by the Greenwood situation too.
You have very "weighted" view on Antony, I respect that. I agree about the balance he brings, BUT I've seen us doing well with Bruno and even Sancho recently on right wing. Antony keeps width and helps us to keep the ball in central areas and around the box, he's very good at that. However, he is the least likely to produce something (goal/assist) from all the options that can play RW at our club. This is a fact supported by stats and "eye test" so there's very little debate here.
I like front 3 to be attacking players and Antony is more of a midfielder in terms of his attributes. For that reason I'd say I'd prefer Olise and probably a few more from the list mentioned before over Antony, who I simply don't rate as an attacking threat. His biggest problem in my opinion is not decision making, it's very poor passing ability (and I'm not even talking about his right foot). He knows it isn't good and this drives his decision making. He clearly feels much more comfortable going for a shot (I have no problem with his shooting).
He has the right mentality like I mentioned before, I trust he won't be bothered by failure and enjoys physicality of the league (contrary to Sancho), but in terms of ability I just don't rate him that high to pursue him for anything more than what was his market value at the time we bought him (30-40m).
There's another interesting point if we really needed to push for left footed right winger, because again I'd argue we looked most threatening with right footed Bruno on right wing and recently Sancho created more chances in two games than Antony whole season.
