On his day Mount can be class, and he’s only 24, but for the money touted here it’s all a bit ridiculous

When VDB was signed, it felt namesake underwhelming signing as we were getting the leftover player of the Ajax team as all the better young talents in other positions were already grabbed by better managed clubs. Instead of getting a quality midfielder, we went for an attacking midfielder VDB who is not of starting XI quality in United as his place is already held by Bruno Fernandez.

Now again, Instead of getting a quality central midfielder who can play as a 6 or 8(one who is defensively as well capable enough to play deep like Modric, FDJ, Gundogen), we are after Mount who is again not going to replace Bruno.

If homegrown quota is an issue, we should be after Bellingham or Rice. Instead doing the same
mistake as we did in VDB.
Even in case of a good opportunity due to price, The transfer makes sense only if it is £30m due to last year contact. Anything close to 50m is a wasting money in a player when it is not needed.

Of all the possible motivations for signing Mount, maybe the most obvious one is the truth - he will be competition for Bruno. Maybe not, but it’s not a crazy thought.
Seems to me that ETH will change system. No6 (Case) with two advanced no8/no10.

There is no logic in spending huge money on a player who will be a backup for Bruno (captain who will play nearly every game). Or buying a player to play him out of position (on deeper role).

Both can be true. We've seen ETH likes to play Bruno wide with a pressing #10 in tougher games, but also Eriksen struggles in the deeper role against tougher teams.

We could very much line up with Mount next to Case and behind Bruno in games against lesser teams, and him in the #10 with Bruno wide against the bigger teams.

Of course rotation will play a part so no doubt Mount and Bruno will rotate, as will Mount and Eriksen, Bruno and Eriksen etc. Throw Rice into the mix and we have 5 very good players to rotate around three positions.

Another who has written him off,in fact just gonna ignore this thread because fed up of negativity. I really hope he sticks it to his biggest critics in here
What he is going stick? By playing as a good replacement for Eriksen in starting XI? Then yes. Any other position he is getting minutes as a squad player doesn’t mean anything. That is exactly I see most fans are worried about especially paying a premium when we need a quality central midfielder.

Yes in a positive note, that is the best hope.
When Sancho or Sanchez was signed, the expectation was a right wing player, the moment it became apparent that they are only good in left wing where we were already stacked, those were wasted money in poor signings. Hopefully Mount won’t be the same.

Yeah mine was just a thought. I personally hope he has been identified as someone who can play the Eriksen role in the current formation (which, in practice, is a hybrid 4231 / 433 anyway). All the arguments that he’s never really played that position might turn out to be red herrings anyway - Mount is pretty rounded and might be very adaptable. Either way he is good enough to inject strong competition into the squad.

In case you hadn’t noticed we are linked to rice and Bellingham is going to Madrid

That's also my feeling, it'll be a pretty exciting midfield if it works.

Who was in that Ajax team? De Jong and who?
Even De Ligt has shown to be overpriced and overrated who we would cry about if he joined us back then

I think it's a great signing to be honest. Fits a Ten Hag type of player and is much more needed than a Caicedo here and now when we have Casemiro. Also it would be better to use Eriksen more rotated than as a starter I think.

Not sure what the price will be though. 40-50m would seem about a fair price I guess.
Seriously? I'd love to know why you think that. I reckon if they were both available for the same price we'd be gunning for Caicedo.

Or is the intention from Erik to add Mount to the attacking options? Instead of one of those 3 we usually have up there..
Like he plays Bruno up there at times. Doesn´t make a world of sense either but playing him as a more normal CM makes even less sense in my head.
Confused.

Personally, I don't understand this signing, especially at the price being talked about. Leave out the 80m Chelsea want, we are crazy to even start negotiations at 50m. Mason Mount has never been a 40m player. As someone on Twitter asked, if mason mount was at united with one year left, would we get 50m for him? We are soooo baddd at this thing...like terrible. Given that many other players (ruben neves, enzo le fee, milinkovic savic etc) are going for less with better skills and better fit, I am shocked that we are even in this saga. All the clubs rumored to be in for him like Liverpool etc cooled their interest the moment the prices were mentioned, there is no chance Mount is worth that

That is a surprising opinion!
I was pretty damn sure that Caicedo or someone in that mould would be absolutely essential for us going forward.
A defensively strong cm is what we lack, even if we have Casemiro. Personally sick and tired of watching us get overrun in midfield because Case is the only midfielder with a clue how to defend. And Case doesn´t have the legs to cover ground quickly enough to be enough on his own. Even if he is good defensively, i personally think that Case is even better for us when going forward more and joining our attack. He has great vision, great passing skills, can assist and score. Would love to see him enabled to go forward more.

It is an issue, people posting on transfers don't realize the rules especially in the champions league. Sancho only just passes

Regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21

Eight places are reserved exclusively:
WAN
Rashford
Shaw
McTominay
Sancho
Maguire

We can name players under 21 for free, the rules for the EPL is the same.

So there really is an English tax.

This 100x. If we are putting Casemiro as the only deep midfielder and anchor, that means we're restricting his forward play. This season has shown this would be a waste.
I'd definitely prefer someone who can hold his own in deep midfield as the defensive minded midfielder, or at least well-rounded b2b.

I am warming to the idea but only for a good price. But with one year left I am sure we get a decent price

Could be the most important signing we do this summer. Goals/assists, workrate, high press. Still young..

Anything above 35 million pounds is a waste. Drag Chelsea through the month, low ball them towards the end of June.

The risk with that is obviously Arsenal or Liverpool offer them 50m and get it done immediately. Which I'd be very happy with.

As usual the experts are quick to suggest alternatives, none of whom have achieved close to what Mount has achieved.

Mount is what I would describe as a 'functional' player, and clearly ETH values function over flair. He likes tactically astute players who can press high, hold the ball and carry the ball. Mount fits that profile.

We're going to see far more of these types of signings with ETH in charge. Less glamour, fewer superstars...but players who fit a system

I'm okay with that too. I think its important for us to revise our image of a club who will always pay a premium over other clubs. If it means missing out on certain targets, especially players such as Mount, so be it.

If the rumored 60 million is the fee with one year of contract remaining, he's superstar money basically.

CL final, Chelsea start Kante and Jorginho.
Semi final 2nd leg, Kante and Jorginho,
Semi final 1st leg, Kante and Jorginho.
Quarter final 2nd leg, Kante Jorginho
Quarter final 1st leg, Kovacic Jorginho
Last 16 2nd leg, Kante Kovacic
Last 16 1st leg, Kovacic Jorginho

Mason Mount has always been the most advanced and most attacking of 3 midfielders on the pitch, and he has always had 2 disciplined and defensively responsible players behind him. The same with England whether it be 2 of Rice/Phillips/Henderson/Bellingham.

This is a completely different scenario to which he will walk into at United, whereby Bruno will fullfil the attacking role that Mount was playing at Chelsea.
It isn't really. You are again getting hung up on names on a teamsheet instead of looking at how a player is utilised and deployed throughout the match. As I said before, out of possession Mount was almost always part of a midfield 3 - and usually Kante was pressing high, so Mount sat deeper next to Jorginho.

It's simple to me really. We need more attacking output and Mount offers more of that than Caicedo who wouldnt be playing every game here as Casemiro might be in the way.

Mount can just do more things imo.

oh dear...

in 1 years time we'd be trying hard to replace Casemiro and probably Kane in the next 2 years if we bought them.

Our purchasing team are abysmal
That's why we're going for 2 strikers apparently and probably another mid. But dont let that ruin your daily dose of moan.
Love how you pluck those years out of thin air too.

If we do indeed intend set up with two advanced #8s ahead of Casemiro, then Mount fits and Caicedo and Rice don't. It's as simple as that.

You can argue that we shouldn't use that system, which is a separate thing and a perfectly fine argument. But it's kinda dumb for people to keep saying "why don't we sign X instead?" if the answer is as obvious "X is clearly a worse option for the actual role the manager has in mind" .

People got a certain type of midfielder in their heads and now they're stuck on it, even though our assumptions about how the manager intended to set up midfield have changed. At this point if you want to suggest actual alternatives to Mount, they need to fit that attacking #8 profile.

I'm probably at about a 9/10. I don't think Mount is or should be the best player in any team, but I do think he makes just about any team better.
Majority of Chelsea fans I have spoken to do not want Mount to leave and it's mainly because of his work ethic, his ability on the ball and the fact he seems highly driven.

The fact that he is a Chelsea stalwart doesn't seem to enter the equation much which for me speaks volumes about the fact he probably is recognised as a very good player amongst Chelsea fans rather than just an academy product with emotional ties to the club.

Why not? One can go forward while the other stays behind. Good passing and shooting-range with both of them and they both run their asses off. Sounds good to me.
Bruno basically never drops into midfield though, and neither dictate play, it's really inbalanced.

If ETH intends to use Mount alongside Bruno sitting in front of Casemiro then I understand it.

However, he's still not worth £60-80m. That's just Chelsea taking the piss.

I would offer them £50m and a pooch from Battersea Dogs Home and be done with it.

It's rare for us to have opposition posters, who watch their team more regularly and know their players much better, giving praise and justifying to United posters who don't think the player is any good or wouldn't be a good fit
Some of the takes in this thread have been utterly baffling, I must say.

That is a good point, he does things Bruno doesn't, he's more flexible.

Definitely this,

Which is exactly what we need as a club, driven and hungry players willing to work hard.
The fact that Mount is a very good player certainly helps as well!

Yeah I think initially there was a reflex among Chelsea fans to be a bit precious about him given the narrative that he was a teacher's pet, Lampard's son, etc - but given how quickly an undoubtedly top class manager in Tuchel recognised his value I'd say that was moved past quickly.

if we are smart we’d use the fact that Mount prefers us and would ask him to wait it out. He is not even a Chelsea fan and would already be feeling hard done by the low ball contract offers from Chelsea. But we have never ever been smart. Watch us panic and shell out 60m.
