He would need a year to get used to professional football again. Nevermind all the issues around it. Major doubts he would come back to the level he was before at United. Probably needs to leave the country.
I doubt he's been sat on the couch playing fifa, he'll have been training for sure.

I honestly think he’s one to get rid of. Remember the whole debacle with the national team in Iceland and then he ‘asked to be excluded from selection’. Definitely something weird went on there and Southgate wanted nothing more to do with him.

The audio is damning and the photos she shared were worrying. Dropping the charges could easily be due to him pleading not to have his career destroyed and he’s really sorry. It doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. There’s been no explanation for the audio and photos.

I hope for their sake he grows up and cops the feck on but that needs to be away from United.

I'm really not understanding you at all. I've heard the tapes and know what I heard. In what way do you think she could be just as bad as him?
I don't want him back and think he probably did it but there are two sides to every story

I really hope none of the people voting yes have daughters.

I feel sick just thinking about my daughter unknowingly celebrating a goal from this guy.

Then why do others don't try to keep it football-related like what the thread opener (and admin) requested? There should be a good reason why he wanted to keep the discussion about football and not other topics.
It’s not possible to talk about this subject purely on football. No idea why the OP thought it would be to be honest

He made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes, some are worse than others. He wasn't punished legally, his girlfriend is having his baby and is soon to be his wife.

Let's not let a mistake made by a boy ruin a man's career.

Closer vote than I thought. Wonder what it would look like if it was an anonymous vote

It's easy to make that judgement based on the audio, but beyond that, we know nothing else.

The police/CPS investigated this extensively, beyond what you often see in sexual assault cases due to the publicity surrounding it and in the end were unable to proceed. Bar a brief statement, we do not know why.
We know why, the alleged victim had a change of heart so any conviction was extremely unlikely.

Greenwood was tried by social media, at the end of the day once you have heard that audio you don’t need much else. Other footballers have probably done similar or worse but recordings weren’t released to the public. That’s the issue for everyone involved, information is in the public domain that never normally would be and it’s impossible to ignore.

I can absolutely fecking guarantee most of those talking about "redemption" and "rehabilitation" would be going the other way if this was about Wout Weghorst rather than Greenwood.

Pathetic.
Well one was basically a child and a spoiled brat and the other is a full grown man, so they're not comparable IMO. And no I'm not trying to justify Greenwoods actions, although I'd give a kid a second chance before a guy nearing his 30's.

He is that Ronaldo fanatic. It’s not a shock to see him post in favour of greenwood
Wow you don't really have to unleash that attack on me, I wasn't even posting anything in favour of Greenwood (I did call him despicable). Sometimes people has to learn how to discuss in civil manner.

I’m going to play devils advocate. There’s plenty of players to choose from that have done some bad shit and still they play. I was fully against him staying but after these last few months. We could really use his talents. Now in saying that. The whole thing is just plain weird. The domestic trouble and now they have a kid? It’s all fecking strange. Hopefully that’s the last time we ever hear anything abusive from MG. People can always change and be better, he’s still very young. Though I believe not many do change, in my experience. Either way, It’s the squads decision and I support whatever they choose.

He can certainly attempt to resume his career, United won’t be holding him back once he is rightfully released.

Is this just a reflection on what an utterly shit state our squad is in terms of forwards and goalscorers...? Would anyone seriously want Greenwood stinking up the place, boos drowning out his every touch - a la Partey but worse - if we had a decent goalscorer?

There's no way anyone would be voting yes to this if it were Weghorst or a mediocre youth talent like Elanga.
Definitely. Or say he was a left winger or a centre back where we are covered. Votes would be completely different.

I hope he never plays a professional game again. Unfortunately I don't expect enough of the world to share that sentiment, so it won't happen.

What he was accused of doing is reprehensible , but I believe everyone deserves a 2nd chance .and would rather live in a society where there is redemption for people and they are not just cast aside forever, especially someone so young who has so much to learn in life.

There would have to be conditions in that he must show real remorse and a real commitment to change his attitude.

If he met those I would consider having him back next season.

But I live in the real world and in the end of the day it won't be ETH or even the board who get the final say , it will be the corporate sponsors and the merest whiff of a social media campaign will see them running for the hills. The board will then decide the easier option is to cut their loses on him and terminate his contract with a hefty pay off.
I agree for the most part, but no way the board will terminate his contract with a pay off. He still has value and European clubs would die for a player like him.

And yes, his attitude and behavior really need to change. Like real remorse. Because he sounded like a real assh* and psycho in the audio tape.

Conflicted. I voted no, but if the club turned around and said they had a duty to rehabilitate I would accept it. I would imagine he needs a loan abroad no matter what though. Has been out of the game a long time.

I for one am glad this has been opened up and @mods I commend you for dealing with this.

It’s clearly a hot and divisive topic but one that needs discussing. Although I’d be interested to see the demographics of each voter yes or no.

Im firmly in the NO camp until further evidence is presented.

The wording of the CPS statement to me is consistent and clear with cases where a victim withdrew their support of conviction but didn’t sound to me like the CPS saying case closed.

That in itself plus the audio and other evidence presented gives me no reason to believe that this is ambiguous in terms of what has happened. If it were then surely a statement explaining would have been made clearly refuting what was heard.

There are several facts including the breaking of bail conditions that anyone who is critically analysing this and not being blinded by the fact he is a very talented footballer and someone who has a footballing skill set we are lacking would consider.

Greenwood like everyone deserves a chance to make amends and improve as a person but that doesn’t mean life should also go back 100% to how it was.

So while it would be amazing for all involved for none of this to be happening unfortunately it has and that means NO.

He was far from finished article before all this. One year is crucial for player development at young age.

training where? Just being in physical shape means as might well sitting on the sofa for a year. He’s another Ravel, although more talented one, but still when you combine the Cnut attitude and the stature of United is as a Clive he’s absolutely not worth the hassle

He shouldn't be let back.

But from a purely sporting point of view it stops us needing to buy two strikers if he is.

I'd sell him and buy two strikers but it's up to the club of course

Many voting no because of what he did, sure have a looser moral compass when it comes to the potential Qatari Royal ownership. Especially when we know which is worse.

Either have a strong ethical view on both or neither.

Fair enough we don't know but it's fairly obvious you can't get a conviction if the victim isn't willing to give evidence and is back the alleged abuser and having their kid. It doesn't take much to join the dots.

Do you really think there's some exonerating evidence out there?

People also seem to be ignoring the fact that she made this public so if he didn't do it why has he forgiven her for this heinous false accusation? It's not rocket science.
It could be anything but it is possible that it does provide something of an explanation.

Whatever it was, it alongside uncooperative witnesses caused the case to be dropped very suddenly. I'm hesitant to speculate as I have said but I would at least assume the evidence was of some substance, given the original audio.

Yeah I didn’t like the dads reaction from day one. If it had been my daughter I’d have been spitting fire
I have four daughters and two grandchildren. One of my daughters has been abused and raped in a relationship. She took the case to court and won 5 of 7 charges. I was with her in court the whole time. With that said…

The hardest part in this is to forgive, forget and continue to love. To go from furious anger, hate, frustration and somewhere in the end to accept forgiveness. It’s really really hard but without forgiveness the hate is still around the corner and will follow us wherever we go. I don’t want that kind of life. My daughter didn’t want that kind of life. We had to move on with forgiveness and accept.

George Micheal wrote Praying for time. For me it says it all.

And it's hard to love
There's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above
Say it's much, too much, too late
Well, maybe we should all be praying for time

You could pick just about any important squad player who isn't a potential wunderkind and the comparison holds.
Yeah but that's kind of the point, isn't it?

You weigh the pros and cons of each outcome. With a low-value squad player, there's much less upside to keeping them on versus all the inevitable baggage - getting rid is a no-brainer.

Can't spell Mkhitaryan
Not really, it's absolutely disgusting.

99% of rapes aren't the kind of violent in the shadows attacks that people think they are. They are coercion, fear and power imbalance.

Some people in this thread need to get a grip of their moral compass
There is a huge difference between rape and statutory rape, I'm a lawyer and I've witnessed what both can do. it's not something I deal with often but still enough to know enough about the subject. It has nothing to do with a moral compass, just hard facts.

Murderers and war criminals are given second chances, not sure why MG is being held to a higher standard. He’s not been found guilty and has borne the weight of public judgment. Time to get him in the field where he belongs.
