It's nonsense
Teammates love to overrated their own. He is a good player but he isn't fit to lace Scholes or Modric's boots. Come on people. He isn't that type of player nor is he even a fraction of their quality.
He looked more Modric than Modric himself in the WC semi final. Of course Modric was 37 yo but it's still quite some achievement imo. It's just one match and I'm not saying he's anywhere near the level of Modric but it's not really nonsense I think.

It is nonsense. One of a footballing GOAT and the other is a player who to date has been a midtable player bar a supporting role in a World Cup run... whereas Luka was the main man for Croatia for many years as well as Real Madrid in their midfield.

He's yet to feature in Champions League or Europa League football and is 24. He's not featured for a big club yet and the pressure that brings.

So I'm not sure his profile and experience is all that weighty.

If he came to a United I'd be fairly pleased but it wouldn't be some incredible get.

Him going to Liverpool, with where they are right now feels about right to me. As does the fee.
I'm sorry, but a world cup final for Argentina is far more pressure than any Europa or a Champions league game for a big club.

Fine, I don't think he's incredible either, but he's not just "decent", that's objectively not true in stats and top managers would completely disagree as well.

Who would have been raving about him being such a top player if he hadn’t played at the WC? He wouldn’t have even got any game time if Le Celso hadn’t been injured. Before the WC he wasn’t exactly pulling up trees at Brighton was he?

Think the hype of being a World Cup winner has distorted his quality……scousers love that hype.

Rather have Caicedo any day of the week.

I said I wasn't saying he's anywhere near the level of Modric (or his career or achievements).

But if you watch that semi final again you'd see the similarities between the two and Mc Allister actually looked more Modric than Modric himself that day. Of course it's because Modric was already 37 yo. Anyway I was really impressed with Mac Allister after that match and I can see why some might compare him with Modric. Surely not the same level or talent but quite a similar style imo.

Not saying he is right about Macallister ever reachign Modric levels, but wasn't Modric at 24 playing for Tottenham (Who Brighton are performing very similar to now?)

After his stint in the world cup, I tuned in on many Brighton matches, and let me tell you that while is not pacy or has the flair of Bellingham, for example, his understanding of football is much better than most.

I would have picked him over Mount, but I prefer this style of player over the fast and dynamic ones that can't see a pass or receive a cross properly.

Also Modric peaked at Madrid, for a fair comparison he should be compared with spurs' Modric.

Sure but its a handful of games. That doesn't make him experienced at the top level. Plenty of other 24 year olds with way more experience at that level.

TBF I described him as "Decent/Good"

I think it's a good signing for them. You can't really argue about 55 million for an established player, good form, good age, has done fantastically at international level. It's a good signing and a sensible fee.

I wouldn't say there's all that much difference in quality between him and Mount. Mount's best season is probably stronger than McAllister's best. The difference is probably that McAllister is in better form, the consistency has been there.

You can add at least 25m to that had we gone for him.

Age is irrelevant - ceiling is more important. Anyone could see Modric was insanely talented, only question marks were physical. I remember seeing his debut for Croatia and thinking he’s one of the biggest midfield talents I’ve ever seen and also was desperate for him to replace Scholes even whilst at Spurs. Mac Allister not on the same planet talent wise imo. He’s a intelligent player granted but Modric has so many other attributes that the Argentine could only dream of.

He’ll do well there as he grafts plus is technically and tactically sound. A bit on the slow side but overall a good signing for them.

Modrić dictated games since forever - Mac Allister is a support player. He's a Milner, a wijnaldum, a Fred, a mount, and so on... That's not an insult. That's just saying what type of player he is. Caicedo dictates games for Brighton more than anyone. Or Gilmour. Mac Allister just supports and adds other qualities of course but is in no way the orchestrator in midfield. That's evidenced by him having fewer touches per game, fewer passes, fewer progressive passes, etc. For Argentina it was the same - Mac Allister added some good forward runs to support and added energy. The quality and control in midfield came from Enzo.

You just can't compare a player who has never dictated games for his side with 2 of the best controlling midfielders of all time. It's nonsense.

Seems very sensible all round. Reasonable fee, good fit, he’ll improve Liverpool and yet he’s not a huge loss, you wouldn’t be surprised to see Brighton replace him with a similarly good player.

Is he going to play #10 for them (or I guess in Pool speak he's the wijnaldum role)? Is he better than guys like KdB, Bruno, Odegaard etc?

I feel a MacAllister - Thiago - Fabhino midfield is pretty damn average. No pace in it, will be easily bypassed, not a lot of creativity etc. They don't even have a player there who can go to the half space and cross it like Henderson.

Enciso already looks like a baller in that position.

He's a peripheral player whose sense of importance has been inflated with his excellent 'support' role during the World Cup run. He's not a main man midfielder whose going to raise Liverpool's level and I wouldn't rate him higher than a prime Hendo or Gini. Reminds me of a roided Van De Beek signing. Did not want him for United - we need to aim for better.
Liverpool never had a main midfielder like you described. A prime Hendo or Gini is exactly what they need so that's why on paper, he's perfect for them.
We could be aiming for better but he'd easily have been the 2nd best midfielder in our team and improved us immediately

Macallister won’t be as good as the both of them, but it’s inaccurate to a paint a picture as if both Modric and Scholes were the best controlling midfielders around from 20-25, they weren’t. Scholes was a number 10 and Modric played across the midfield, they didn’t become the player you describe till much later in their careers.

He isn’t really comparable to Kdb or Bruno who are great final third passers with the licence to make whatever pass they wish, he’s the middle player between a Casemeiro and Bruno, a facilitator who can do a bit of everything. He is one of the best pressing midfielders in the league, top 10 for throughballs, yet he is also one of the better ball retainers. The best comparison to him would be a Gundogan.

This is correct, Caicedo is the transformative player in that midfield.

Was actually writing the same thing. He could easily be as good as Gini and he helped them win the league and the CL.

Find it really weird that he's part of two successful sides (Brighton relatively speaking), but people just say he's got nothing to do with that and an average player.

They dictated games, not to the same extent or the same effectiveness, but they still had that style. They weren't quiter support players ever, they were the ones that took control. Billy Gilmour dictates games more than Mac Allister does and he's 3 years younger.

Inaccurate as Mac Allister played several games as a 10 and consequently had those stats. In the games Mac Allister played deeper, he had more touch than anyone bar the CBs.

He also was way more progressive than his midfield partner. One example of this is Brighton against Man Utd (when they won 1-0). Mac Allisger played 55 passes with an accuracy of 89 % progressing the ball 344 yards. Caicedo made 54 passes with 86 % accuracy progressing the ball 203 yards. Gilmour made 40 passes with 90 % completion rate progressing the ball 170 yards.

Other great examples of when Mac played deeper is their home game against Spurs or Newcastle. The problem with stafs is that he quite often played both a CM and AM within a game. But when Mac Allister plays deep he is a controlling midfielder. And I think that is where Klopp will want to develop him.

You know how it is, it's basically projecting the hope he'd fail which is something understandable as a Utd fan

Prime Hendo and Gini could out run and out work superior midfielders than them technically - it was physically where they were world class and due to the insane athleticism, they were able to carry out Klopp's tactics to an extremely high level consistently. Mac is not able to cover ground with the same intensity as those guys week in week out.

We're still too busy celebrating our league cup win.

Annoyed at this one. Good price and would have improved us.

So according to the cafe he’s either a midtable level player or he’s the next Modric? I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle and he’ll be a good signing for them.

Mate, don't know what to tell you. Have you considered a career in scouting? You crearly got the eye for it, if you could tell from Mocric playing at spurs that he would end up becoming one of the top midfielders of all time.

Indeed, I've often said how crazy Guardiola was for shipping out Otamendi to stick with Stones.
