We’d never be in for a player that was released from Ajax on a free and banned from football for doping.
It was judged as an honest mistake by Onana, nothing dodgy and UEFA agreed. But a dope is a dope and he got a 9 month ban.

If that is the reason we’re not interested then I’d be very disappointed. We’ve had a great players like Cantona and Rio who have both received bans (obviously for different reasons) and they went on to great things.

This doesn’t tell the whole story.

He was banned for doping on the grounds he was taking a masking agent.

A masking agent covers up the banned substance so if you do a drugs test, the performance enhancing substance won’t show but the masking agent will instead. However masking agents are still banned for obvious reasons but the bans are reduced as no one can legitimately say for sure that the player was doping.

He claimed he took his girlfriends cold medicine without realising, however she’d have to be on some pretty fecked up stuff to have that particular masking agent present in her cold medicine.

Safe to say, he was definitely doping but got cleared on a technicality.
His wife had just given birth. Furosemide post-partum is pretty commonly used to help manage blood pressure. It wasn't a cold medicine, it was an anti-hypertensive.

If the rumours are correct and there's some sort of swap deal on the cards for him and Lukaku, I'll be over the moon.

Anyone wanna know just how much a competent keeper (yes, and striker(s) that csn hold up the ball) will change our game, just watch this match. De Gea gets the ball, Citeh crowd him. Onana gets it, they back off or approach with caution. Respect for known ability.

This post is from over 4 years ago and the same consensus still exists about us needing to upgrade other positions before we get to the GK. Not saying you're one of those posters bosnian_red but it just shows that we need to make a change now and bring in a keeper who will at the very least give us the ability to play out of a well coordinated press.
Yeah I mean at the time it was valid as Henderson was very promising and our issues started with the manager and existed throughout the squad to a bigger degree than the goalkeeper... but it has been blindingly obvious all season that the goalkeeper is the 2nd biggest priority for us, just behind the striker position. We simply get an awful performance level out of that position relative to even normal premier league sides (I don't think a single team in the top half of the Prem would take De Gea if he was free and reasonable wages to be a starter, even more than top half really). Striker we are Championship level genuinely so that's obviously the biggest priority. But they're both positions in dire need and it's laughable how long it has been left unaddressed. His entire contract has been shite play. He had already started his decline before he got his contract ffs.

Did you notice he gave it away a few times? De Gea would be crucified for that.

He let in the Rodri shot. De Gea should have saved it (first goal FA cup)

I‘d love to have Onana. I‘m not sure he would be treated well by you lot though.

Did you see Ederson give away the ball numerous times? De Gea gets criticized for every long ball that isn‘t won by us.

BTW we had Lukaku who is a very good striker and you lot didn‘t appreciate him.

I agree with your post at the time. The funny thing is that some are still saying the same thing four years later.

There is a massive difference in being part of the build up the entire game and playing 10 great balls and making 2 sloppy passes throughout the entire game, compared to just punting it away inaccurately and giving up on playing out from the back because the goalkeeper is incapable of it. Mistakes inevitably happen and can be costly. De Gea makes more mistakes than average goalkeepers despite trying to play out from the back far fewer than average goalkeepers.

And yeah we had Lukaku who would improve us now despite being nowhere near good enough and pretty much the reason Inter lost today.

Here we go again ,furnish the whole details, Uefa accepted it was an accident and that is why he wasn't banned for 4 years.

It’s like he’s daring opponents to press him and then he just pings an inch perfect 40 yard grass cutter through the lines. City almost abandoned the press at one point because he kept breaking it.
I didn't watch the game, but that is something keepers who are truly comfortable with possession will often actively encourage. They dare the opposition to press them, as that instantly creates an overlap somewhere else that their team can take advantage of now they have the numbers advantage. Obviously once in a blue moon it will come back to bite the keeper in the arse as they make a mistake, but they (and their managers) feel the advantages gained by it significantly outweigh the negatives.

It's actually the De Gea fans like yourself who I expect to be very harsh towards the new keeper. You seem to think the critics have unrealistic expectations, and thus you will push those unrealistic expectations on the new guy using exactly the kind of comments you have in this post. Every time he gives the ball away, every mistake he makes, a significant amount of the goals that we concede, they will jump on it and say that De Gea got attacked for similar or that De Gea would have saved it. Or pretend that the critics were making out that a new keeper would never give the ball away, or some rubbish like that. Not necessarily you yourself (although this post makes me think you will) but certainly others.

In reality, the majority of the critics know the new guy will give the ball away at times. He will make mistakes. He will concede the occasional goal that he perhaps could have saved. Nobody is perfect. But De Gea is already doing all that, and most probably worse than any decent keeper we bring in. The expectations are being kept realistic in terms of the keeper himself, although I do think there are a few who going overboard in terms of how much of an impact the keeper by himself will have on the team as a whole. It'll be a big impact, but not as big as some seem to think.

Strange to bring Lukaku into it. There was plenty of appreciation for him in his first half a season when he was actually performing well. But his second season was atrocious and his 'teachers pet' thing he had going on with Mourinho despite being the worst performer in the team was blatantly bad for team morale. Doing it in Italy is one thing, but he crashed and burned as soon as he came back to Chelsea again, and then hasn't been particularly good in his latest season for Inter.

This is Ten Hag's boy too so should be a low-hanging fruit. He was the primary reason City didn't look so dominant yesterday. Not convinced about Diogo Costa.

Dunno, maybe Ten Hag isn't so keen on him. I believe Ten Hag had problems with Onana after he came back from his suspension.

Are you being deliberately daft here?

They all give it away at times. It comes as part of the deal. The difference is that there is an overwhelmingly huge amount of upside there as well.

With De Gea we watch him kick it out of play and give it to the opposition with absolutely none of the upside we saw from Onana or Ederson last night.

He must have single handedly started at least five dangerous counters alone.

If ever a team needed a goalkeeper who could do that then it’s this iteration of Manchester United. In Bruno and Rashford we have two of the very best players in the world on the transition. Had Inter had them and not the donkeys they had up top last night then they might have scored a few.

Don’t sit there and get into the game of well, he gave it once, too. It’s disingenuous and you know it.

I think him and ten Hag had a bit of a falling out at Ajax?

Inter are in the shit when it comes to money and they need to shift a lot of players/wages this summer. He should be available but I don't think it will happen given how his time at Ajax ended.

Never seen him play before but he's so superior on the ball to anyone in the PL not named ederson.

He dropped him for Pasveer and Stekelenburg when he returned for the remainder of the season, was unhappy with his fitness levels after his suspension.

Yep. He did give it away one time but Inter won it back quickly and danger averted. The rest of the time he was an extra CB at times, he was basically the best passer in the back 5. City weren’t bothering with pressing him at one point. It was amazing to watch. Aside from the ball playing excellence, he was also commanding his box, collecting crosses and saved his team from being down and out when Foden was clean through.

Jason Steele at Brighton does the exact same thing. Baits the opposition into pressing, and then finds the spare man that results from the pressure. He’s also a very accurate long kicker.

Being able to play round a (good) opposition press, turns their strength into a major weakness. Instead of winning the ball high up, pressing sides’ high lines are exposed. I’ve heard it referred to as an artificial counter-attack and we’d be so good at it with Bruno and Rashford.

Brighton gave City one of their toughest games this season and should have won the game at the AMEX. Admittedly, City were heavily rotated with the league secured. I can’t see how anyone can watch Ederson, Onana, Steele et al and not see how transformative an equivalent keeper would be for us.

Lukaku needs about 15 shots to score in most games, shown by last night. One of the Belgium games as well at the World Cup they needed a win to qualify and the amount of chances he had was criminal. The open goal as well he missed, his first touch is a tackle as well. Also comparing the play of Ederson, Onana and DDG is crazy considering the overall play of the first two names. They may give the ball away on occasions but the defence has confidence in them, you pass the ball back to DDG it’s up to the stars what happens with it and who ends up with.

I‘m pointing out the hypocrisy of criticizing De Gea for every misplaced ball while I don‘t hear a peep about Ederson and Onana doing the same yesterday.

I swear had it been DeGea in goal yesterday he would be blamed for Inter losing.

Clearly both players are superior ball-players/sweepers, Onana would be a great gk for us.

People are talking about the importance of Onanas ability on the ball not whether he's a good keeper or not

Certainly fits this modern goalkeeper description that we apparently need. Thought he was going to take a man on at one point and go on a run.

Out of that Inter team I would love Barella, what a player he is. Onana and Barella, get it done.

People are getting on De Gea’s back because most games he’s frustrating in this sense. It’s disingenuous to make this comparison. If Onana had been consistently finding players on the bench with his long passes from the back then he’d get the same treatment.

I love Dave, and he’s still a good goalie, but not good enough for a club of our stature. And tbh I find it odd that in all these years his passing and command of the area has not improved one bit.

Why the feck was he taking that then?

How anyone can look at the situation with De Gea and conclude that United fans lack patience is absolutely beyond me. He's had a slump of form lasting five seasons now and yet only now are people finally asking for change and running out of patience. Far from being impatient, that level of patience is almost unheard of at a club of our size.

Not an upgrade on Dave.

Sure, De Gea wouldn't have claimed a single cross. Would be rooted to his line all match. Would punt every bit of possession straight to the City centre-backs and spread panic amongst our defence like it's going out of fashion, but still.

I have to admit that I thought he was a joy to watch yesterday. I did sit up and take notice. Wouldn't be against this at all. Gave them an extra player in that early build-up phase.
