Mason Mount | Confirmed

I think Mount is a good player coming off a poor season, at a club that needs to sell players and with a contract ending in a year.

The fee doesn't really sit right with me assuming we will have a limited budget and a number of other areas in the team we also need to solve.

Personally I would have preferred we set our ceiling at 45-50 million and if Chelsea refused tell Mount we will sign him next summer on a free.

I think the transfer is getting too expensive all things considered.

Tell Chelsea to feck off and we will buy him for free next year. But then I wont be surprised if Man Utd accepted Chelsea offer.

If he leaves on a free then you're up against all the top clubs for his signature. He's Bayern bound if Tuchel is still there.

Also, is Ten Hag going to wait a year? Whatever role he has in mind for Mount will surely be filled by someone else this summer.
I mean you have reports of him being keen if it goes that way. I'd be surprised if he wound up outside of the premier league.
We cant fill all the roles needed this year - we wont get a striker, 2 midfielders and a goalkeeper. It just doesn't work on our budget (and we probably need a 2nd striker and a cb on top of that). Kane or Mount on a free next year or Rabiot this year are the obvious gaps to pull something together. Or De Gea for another year but that looks dead in the water.
Keeping Fred or McTominay for another year or do something crazy like play Bruno as a 10 aren't the worst stopgaps. Particularly when you put Caicedo in the mix.

Just go and buy Caicedo at this point, Chelsea can get 60 million from another club for Mount.

That's like buying a pair of shoes because you can't afford a jacket.
I think it's just as much to do with principal as it is affordability. Caving to excessive demands when the player has a year left on his contract and wants out sends the wrong message.

My personal opinion is that Caicedo is much more of a natural fit for us than Mount anyway. Maybe the manager wouldn't share the same sentiment, but if we're going to get ripped off, I'd rather it be for the younger player with the higher ceiling. I can take or leave Mount.

We are talking the 10% chance he stays. We both know this deal is happening. Theirs currently an £8m gap with your club willing to meet and talk.

I mean it’s pretty much done mate.

The most optimum approach would be that we already put a pre-contract in place with him for signing next year on a free. This will send out a message to teams who want to fleece us.

What is likely to happen is a negotiation where Chelsea lower their price by a couple of million but still emerge as winners from this negotiation.
I don’t think what you suggest is even allowed, is it?

All a bit of a joke... City, Liverpool do their business efficiently and quietly. Our transfers, however, occasionally become drawn out dramas. This should not be a two-week negotiation ffs... we pay how much for Sancho and Antony, and we don't want to spend £60m for Mount?

We have little choice, just get this done. And for those who say walk away, just look at our squad. Look at it. What has changed? Pre-season starts in a few weeks.

Club needs to sort itself out, its administration is embarrassing. And it's affecting work to improve the squad. I'm fed up with it. Just sign the player, he wants to play for Manchester United and he's a very good player.
That seems like it cause you track United transfers day in day out. It's called negotiation.

The number of people calling for us to walk away. Somehow I don't think all 3 parties would have come this far if it wasn't eventually gonna happen. Like with FDJ last year he always maintained he wasn't budging but here Mount is compliant and both Utd and Chelsea have made concessions.

We have offered 50+5 while they want 58+7. I think it gets done somewhere between 50+10 or 52/53 +7/8. Both sides can claim a victory and the player gets the move

Yeah I was thinking 52+8!

This. If it was a player the majority liked a lot more would be talking this way.

Just imagine this was Caicedo and Chelsea are Brighton guys.

I think we can all agree it’s over and no1 is walking away empty handed.

It seems to be a number of posters will call the club an embarrassment and shambles whatever happens.

Because he played under Poch. Football is littered with players wanting to leave under previous regime only to change their minds when a new managers comes in. Mount has been at Chelsea since 6 years old and there is definitely an affinity. If he becomes a valuable clog in Poch system he will definitely sign United or Real Madrid.

Yo Chelsea fans are getting hurt over this one

It’s over. Why would he want to stay and play for Poch with ZERO European football. When he can play for ETH and Champs League.

Yeah I know, we’re just mugs in every transfer. Basically the selling club just has to set the price insanely high, so that when we compromise on a lower-but-still-high figure, we come away feeling like we’ve got a deal. It’s so obvious and it keeps happening. Lionel Hutz school of negotiating, get Mason Mount for £60m+ and we even get to keep this free bird cage! Still got it.

Just not feeling this . Maybe he will turn out to be a solid player for us, but if you were honest, no one had Mason Mount on their bingo card.

Not that I would conclude that from the Mount saga but it’s tough to argue that we haven’t been totally shambolic for the last ten years.
I'm talking about this transfer window. Everybody knows we've been shambles for a while.

Name us a football team other than United when what you just stated does not happen to them!!!

I'd like him to sign but when we've made it clear that the last bid was a final one we have to stick with that. Can't really blame Chelsea, we've had clubs take advantage of our stupidity in the transfer market for years so they're obviously going to keep pushing for more knowing that eventually we'll pay up. Last summer was the perfect opportunity to show things would change now Woodward has gone but instead we ended up doing one of most absurd deals for Antony.

At some point we have to realise that there comes a time when we say the price is too much and move on to the 2nd choice whoever that is. The player himself seems to have made it known he wants the move here so either wait for Chelsea back down later in the window or sign him for free next summer.

Yes. Usually selling club sets a crazily low price.

Made me chuckle.
You weren't imagining that he was playing 90 minutes of football when he was 4, were you? People start knocking around footballs at that age, for the first time ever, if I may add.
There was a quote from one of his former coaches that he first started visiting then Academy grounds when he was 4 and very regularly when he was around 7.

Kovacic cost them £40m and Havertz I’m sure cost them £75m. They will have to offset the remaining cost off what the buying clubs have paid for them. Not sure if this is exactly how it works but it’s very similar to what I’m saying. That all said selling these players doesn’t give them enough money to spend £80m on Caicedo.

They need the Mount deal to go through and the more they can get for Mount the more they can legitimately spend this summer.
Suppose Havertz had a five year contract when they signed him and it had two years left to run I'd say they made. A profit on his amortization because in their book he would have been worth only 30m. To me, I am not well versed on the latest rule, but it doesn't make sense to hold a club to a valuation they paid five years ago when the contractual status means that his value has depreciated.

I don't get this at all. He was on noones preferred lists before we got linked to him. Even so, i can understand it if it was an opportunistic chance to get a bargain based on his contract and Chelsea desperate need to sell.

As it stands it feels nothing like the bargain it would have been at rightfully 10-15m less, whilst also helping a rival balance their books after their stupid spending spree.

If we end up financing Chelsea to buy Caicedo or Rice or someone else with a higher ceiling we'd want at United we're going to look like mugs.

“No one can have educated opinions on football! Everyone here is just a muppet! United know better than anyone!”

And then people are frustrated when we spank 80m on Antony just for him to turn out a mid table winger even though many in that thread voiced the same concerns we are now voicing with Mount (overpriced, limited skillset, underwhelming metrics)

Underwhelming metrics? Did you see the McAlister comparison?

Anyone know how Chelsea fans feel about him going?

Other clubs seem to be buying players at reasonable prices. I mean the difference I suppose is that I really don’t rate Mason Mount at all. Would be like us setting £100m price on McTominay. So the starting position was way overinflated from the beginning.

I think everyone is running away slightly wiht the whole Chelsea winning thing here as well, their original estimation is 70-80 and they've had to climb down a bit too mind, it's not just us having to bump up, we'll most likely meet at 60 and call it a day, which is a bit more than our original offer but it's also less than Chelsea originally wanted. So it's not like Chelsea have stuck to their price and then we've waited all summer and caved and paid that price. This isn't like an Antony.
Our estimation of Harry Maguire is 120m.
