I'm fine with the signing in theory as long as we sign a GK (very likely) and a Striker (who knows) still. My biggest concern is the fact that we seem to be getting priced out of all the decent strikers having just splonked £55m+ on this guy. Hopefully it's all hearsay and nonsense.
I think we’ll get the GK. On CF I’m not really sure who is available who is that good? We can’t spend 150m on Osimhen and that be our only transfer spending and we can’t get Harry Kane as he seems to refuse to leave Spurs. The rest are all okay links with no standout. So I can see the login in getting in a CM ETH rates highly as opposed to just throwing cash at any CF. Maybe we’ll get a decent but inexpensive CF with an eye on a big signing next year?

Whitwell seems to be going into overdrive as the club's PR machine on this one. Not sure about giving him the number 7 personally, but I guess a lot of the mystique around that number has been eroded in recent years anyway. I'm not convinced now was the right time for Garnacho to get it either.

He's going to have step his game up from here.

I was fine with him coming in to bolster our options, he's good without being great and would be a good signing for that, but the number 7 suggests we plan for him to be a key player for us. Nothing I’ve seen suggests he's good enough for that but lets wait and see how the season goes.
What exactly have you seen? He was Chelsea player of the year twice and a key player when they won the Champions League

PR this. PR THAT! No good news ever exists it’s all PR I tell you! Believe NOTHING! (unless it’s bad news then we’re balls deep in that)

The decision makers at this club are just terrible. Garnacho should be #7 easily.
Yep it was all set up to have a teen sensation flying down the wing in the #7 again. Moreover, Garnacho thrives off the pressure and eyes being on him

My only logical thought is that ten Hag doesn't want the number 7 to put too much spotlight on Garnacho at this point. Perhaps when Varane leaves in a couple of years, Mount will then revert to #19 and Garnacho will take the #7 when he's established in the team

The more I see people talk about the status, importance and pressure of the #7 shirt, the more I think we should keep giving it players who don't fit that idea of a #7 until that image goes away.

If you've been supporting United for more than 20 years then the number 7 is significant. Just because the dickheads who own our club have made a mess of it recently, doesn't mean the tradition is no longer important.
Spot on. Oh it's just a number, no it isn't if you care about the history and tradition.

I'm sure ETH gave some thought to whether Garnacho should get it, maybe he wants to keep him grounded and humble this way.

Or it was just an available shirt number and Ten Hag thinks Mount is really, really good and will be an important player for us so why not.

We need to reduce the hype around the number 7 shirt. Could not be less bothered about who it goes to now.

The legends who wore it made the shirt what it was worth, not the other way round

What's the criteria to get number 7 anyway? after Ronaldo we've tried:
  1. An old proven goalscorer : Didn't do shit
  2. A flying winger of our own : couldn't handle it and decided to get his old number back
  3. A proven CL winning midfielder from Madrid : cried and left britain for eternity
  4. A proven winger at the best form of his life from Arsenal : lost his mojo almost instantly, running around like a useless midget and then fecked off to Italy
  5. A "special" talent with a lot of arrogance : failed to meet even the most basic of expectations (without even counting in the shirt number)
  6. Giving it back to Ronaldo as a failproof solution : sacked the manager and single handedly ruining the club that finished 2nd just a season prior
Basically it means feck all now. The myth is gone until someone becomes successful while wearing it. Let it go and move on. We will stumble a good number 7 wearer again but we shouldn't expect it.

I like how everyone absolutely lost their minds over the 250k base wage figure only for it to come out that it was utter bollocks.

When did player reveals all become so cringe. Is this what the modern football fan enjoys? :houllier:
You think Mount putting on a United shirt is cringe? Or have I missed something? Did you watch Sanchez’ some 6 years back!

To get this right, we are about to sell all our integrity to Qatar, but people fuming about giving the 7 to player not flashy enough? I really couldn't give a shit at the moment.

Rashford is LW. Bruno is a 10. Unless we're planning to play Rashford as a striker and moving Mount in his position then Mount has to be next to Bruno with Casemiro behind. We're not going to keep 60M player on the bench.
If everyone is fit I think our strongest line up still includes Eriksen over Mount - he's definitely upgradeable with someone like Caceido but I struggle to see it with Mount because he's just never really played that role and I doubt you can just slot into it despite being a very intelligent player. Case on his own (any player to be honest on their own) is super high risk. If we do see him there we are going to have to dominate the ball to the a similar level as City do because that midfield three in transition (Case/Mount/Bruno) is a disaster waiting to happen if we don't.

I can see Rashford being our 9 this season and Mount starting LW. For me we'd lack a lot of pace in the attack that way given Bruno, Mount and Antony are not that fast. Only other thing I guess we aren't discussing is Antony getting dropped for Mount given there are rumours he's got this reoccurring ankle issue so we'd have Rashford - Martial - Mount as a front three.

When I was a kid I used to memorise all the shirt numbers of every player. Now, I don’t care. The player in the shirt is way more important than the number.

Im sure Garnacho is punching the air right now, but it’s good to not rush something like this on him.

Nothing is sacred in the eyes of a football fan. Mount a Chelsea boy through and through and he still gets stick.

Pr?! feck me.
You’re probably the most gullible person to ever exist if you believe he fired up his word processor and wrote that statement himself. Just from a brand perspective to ensure he doesn’t say the wrong thing, it makes sense to have it written and approved by his PR team.

Squad number means nothing but it does make sense. They could've kept it blank and given it a new striker but it sounds like the new striker profile will be lower than Mount's. Sancho/Antony don't deserve it and Garnacho probably isn't ready as he doesn't start every game so can see why Mount got it.

You think the current incarnation of Eriksen starts over Mount? And you worry that we will be more of a "disaster waiting to happen"??

Mount is excellent defensively off the ball and Eriksen is nearly non existent. I wish you could explain to me how you worked that one out.

You lot are amazing.

Legacy.

Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo

Now it's seems it's for the average player. It's what we get now, Owen, Valencia, Mason bloody Mount.

He is average at best, so to see him wearing 7 suggests no one cares about the past history of that number.

Can see why some don't care, and why others are disgusted.
What a construction, ffs.

Reminder: RedCafe used to want to give Obertan the number 7. I was a lurker back then but I'll never be able to forget that.
