Maguire is no longer United captain

Exactly my thoughts. Why the statement? Comes across entitled and bitter.
He really can do no right in some people's eyes. Being stripped of the captaincy is a pretty big deal at a club with United's profile. For him to say nothing would have been weird.

A welcome ruthlessness. I’d have more sympathy for Maguire if it wasn’t for his self delusion, especially following his embarrassing celebration for England against Albania.

Right decision - hopefully trying to put pressure on him to move

Wonder who will be the replacement and vice captain as DDG can't now either

Bruno?
Amad now that he’s back at the club. Couldn’t strip Maguire of the captaincy when the main man was on loan last season

I'd also imagine that this was done with the club's blessing. From a United perspective it really doesn't matter whether it comes from the club or from Maguire himself, and as I say I think this way is actually more shrewd.
Not sure about that. In any case the club kind of needs to come out with some kind of a statement soon, can’t have players breaking news from inside the club.

Apparently the decision was indeed made or at least communicated to Maguire today, as otherwise the club perhaps wouldn’t have been adding the ”club captain” caption to photos of him arriving and training in the last few days.

Bruno then Varane or Casemiro as vice. Maybe Rashford. Doesn’t matter really now, we have leaders and proper characters on and off the pitch and that’s what matters.

This is a big sign he wants to stay on at United. It would have happened automatically with his sale and there would be no need for statements. Maybe ETH is trying to push him out.

Problem is he has no big reason to leave, massive wages, his England place is safe even if he doesn’t play any games. He also doesn’t seem to give a shit about being 5th choice.

Wtf no it doesn't. It comes across as entitled and bitter because you hate him; nothing in the actual statement comes across that way even in the slightest.
Correct.

To remind myself how normal the statement is, I’ve just looked at what happened with Tyrone Mings last summer. Unsurprisingly, he wrote a similarly respectful statement and wished John McGinn the best publicly.

In this day and age, not saying anything would be weird.

The cultish way in which people hate Maguire (on what seems to be a suspiciously personal level) is really, very strange.

I feel like it's a bit of a formality who is officially the captain and who wears the armband in games - you're either a leader or you're not. But this is still the correct decision and maybe there will be a bit less noise around the Maguire situation is he does end up staying this season.

Have some self respect and leave Harry - take the hint. Only reason he’d stay now is for the wages.

If he was leaving then I don't think this would have happened. To me, it's a sign he's probably staying.
Nah it doesn't say anything about Maguire staying or leaving , only thing it confirms is United would have New Permanent Captain going forward that's it .

Captains have to play Harry, pal. You're not good enough to play.

Definitely some games being played by both sides. United won't force a player out but this is their way of making his situation untenable, Maguire ideally if he left for lower wages would probably want united to contribute to his wages so is incentivized to dig his heels down and say how much he loves the cub and wants to fight for his place etc. Just gamesmanship. Hopefully he's gone by the start of the season.

It's extremely strange. I'm not sure how anybody could read that Tweet and think "Wow, that comes across as bitter and entitled". It's the most generic, milquetoast footballer Tweet you could hope to get and like we've both said, had he not put it out there you can bet your bottom dollar at least one of the tabloids would be running an article about how "LIVID" he is with Ten Hag's decision.

Correct decision, though I was hoping it'd take place by default once he's sold this summer. A bit harsh telling him now. Most likely he made it clear that he wants to stay.

Bruno will be the next captain but for me it's the wrong decision. I'd rather Varane or Cas, who have the mental strength and the right attitude on the pitch, Bruno has neither.
The timing is interesting considering that West Ham have that Rice money now and are said to be interested. It might have been times by ETH to make it clear to Maguire that he’s not in his plans so consider that offer from West Ham seriously.

Ultimately though Maguire can’t have expected to continue as club captain when Shaw was being picked ahead of him during an injury crisis. West Ham would be a good fit for him I think and it wouldn’t be an embarrassing move for Maguire. He can step in and take the vacant captain position there and guide them in Europe next season.

With the wages he’s on a loan with United covering part of his salary is the only way I can see him not being here this season.

I can't unsee Bruno's attitude on the pitch away at Anfield as we were battered 7-0 by Liverpool. Didn't act like a captain that day, and his petulant rolling around like he has been shot whenever someone sneezes near him is frustrating. Casimero would be a better captain if he has grasped the language or even Martinez, I prefer it goes to a fighter.

Has any player lost captaincy for non misconduct and stayed at the club?

Amazing how people can come to polar opposite conclusions based on the same scenario.

It's definitely a nudge for him to leave. Above all, disregarding Maguire, it's a necessary change for United to have a captain playing regularly that also commands the respect of his squad.

I think it's a good way to do it. Get ahead of the media with their "Maguire FURIOUS after losing the captaincy" by putting your own statement out about it.

If anyone has an issue with what Maguire has Tweeted they need to get a fecking grip.
That's a fair point actually. Saves some drama.

Fair enough, Harry. I'll back off....today.

His football situation is baffling to the level, we could almost keep McTominay and play him as 4th defender with Fish.

There is night and day difference between Maguire of today and Maguire in his first season. Then he was calm, modest and no BS when it comes to defending. What has actually happened to him ? Ever since he wrestled Greek cops in a bar, I swear...

He really doesn’t do himself any favours with this kind of shit. Let the club announce it and then do your statement if you must.

There was no need for him to post it on Twitter with an emotional message. He never deserved the armband.

Just a reminder, in the week where Dele Alli has talked about personal problems causing his downfall, don't be too harsh on Harry who is experiencing quite a fall from grace.
