He was completely spoilt here with the wages and his standing at the club for years. Now reality has set in, the last 5 years and his fall from grace is there for everyone to see and he will have difficulties to attract a good side. He will have to settle for money in a shit league or a good league with low wages and not a guarantee of a starting spot.

Andy Mitten on the podcast Talk Of the Devils by the Athletic. He said that it was a Marca line that was used for PR purposes instead of them getting cold feet due to the fee, De Gea’s performances for Spain, and maybe a change of manager who wanted to go in a different direction? Can’t remember all the details but it was something along those lines. Maybe someone remembers the episode?
Thanks for the info mate.

I've tried google on that for 10' and found nothing. Imo if what Andy Mitten said is true there would be a lot more news or talks about this. But the search results returned from google were very limited only one page and I found basically nothing.

Found it mate, it’s this episode from the 22nd minute.

Mitten has amazing connections within United and in Spain (where he lives). If he goes on record to say something, you can guarantee someone well connected has said it to him. Whether it’s true or not is a different story, but he always comes through with what he hears from people who are making the decisions at big clubs.

Also, the fax machine story is more fun than the actual answer, which is Madrid started stalling because they wasn’t sure about the deal.

We appreciate his service... he stayed a little longer than he should've and was paid too much, but nonetheless, he was loyal to the club and did well for many years.

He was the best at what he did but the game changed around him thanks to Pep and Klopp. He was getting better though at the modern stuff but the learning curve was just too costly and not promising enough. Overall ETH has ditched exactly the players I and several others said he would except AWB. He's the only one who has successfully adapted to high press of the ones who looked like they wouldn't. Unbelievably people thought Ronaldo might be able to do it which is mind boggling in retrospect but pretty silly at the time.

Thanks for the clip mate. Yeah it's kinda hard to imagine a club like Madrid would let something that silly happened.

The Madrid press will always run damage control when they fail to sign a player for whatever reason.

That's where the "Mbappe now runs PSG" bullshit came from when they didn't sign him last year (which plenty also immediately bought as true).

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

It really was a strange situation.

Throughout the entire 2015 transfer window it was very obvious that Real wanted De Gea to kick up a fuss and force us to sell him for a low fee. While he made it obvious he did want us to sell, I'll give him credit that he didn't do anything to really cause problems and simply sat back expecting Real to eventually pay the fee it would take. Finally right at the end of the window it seemed that they agreed to do so, but then of course it fell apart as the window closed. Then a couple of weeks later De Gea signed a new contract.

In the 2016 transfer window Real once again showed interest to see if De Gea would kick up a stink, and this time he showed no interest at all and they quickly moved on and were never linked again.

Real certainly didn't 'want' to spend what we were demanding which is why it ended up going down right to the last minute, but just what caused the final failure is something we'll probably never know. Did they deliberately let time run out because they thought they could get him for that cheaper price 12 months later? Did we deliberately let time run out because we didn't actually want to sell him? Or did both clubs truly agree but it was so late that communication and technical issues wrecked the deal? Any of the three wouldn't surprise me. Whichever it was, De Gea certainly didn't seem too impressed with Madrid's messing around with the deal seeing as he quickly signed his new contract with us and didn't return the interest they showed the following season.

Rumours that Bayern Munich want him. Not sure that would be a good move for either of them?
Their backup, Sommer is about to join Inter Milan. So I guess, they are looking for backup options for Neuer. As plenty of people have already said, he most probably will only get backup offers at top clubs.

After witnessing the greatest sweeper for the past decade I’m sure the Bayern fans will appreciate watching one of the greatest anti-sweepers in action.

Bit of a blow to Dave to be Neuers backup. Hope be finds a good club and is their number 1! Best of luck to him.

Some of the grief he got for last season particularly was a bit exaggerated. He was no longer good enough for us based on multiple years of evidence and he also clearly didn't suit us stylistically, but the "one of the worst in the league" stuff his most vociferous critics were pushing was obviously nonsense. And the season before last he was better again.

He is what those stats suggest, an average PL goalkeeper. Just one that isn't suited to the way most teams now want to play in the PL now. In fact, do any big teams in Europe not emphasise playing out from the back any more?

Ignoring the data and method behind conclusions onf this tweet, this is exactly what he is. An average goalkeeper, declining and not capable of playing from the back. It was the right moment to let him go, simply.

PS
This color coding is exactly how we should be looking at stats. Split between above average, average and below average. Players inside those groups will mix (during the season, between the seasons etc) but not so much between the groups. That plus looking at the extremes.

Would be a shame if he rots on the bench.

Hope he finds a club where he's undisputed number 1.
With his ridiculous wage demands, unless some crazed Saudi club come in for him, he is not going to find a club where he will be number one on the wages he wants. He hasn't deserved those wages we gave him since 2018 and he hasn't been anywhere near great since 2018. His inability to find a club with one week left to start the season should tell you all you need to know. So-called great players don't go this long without finding clubs. We just indulged him here because that's what poorly-run clubs do. Any other big club would have gotten rid or demoted him by 2019 at least.

If he does manage to make his wage demands more realistic, he might be able to find some mid-level clubs willing to take the punt on having him as their number one but no big club is making him number one again. Those days are over.

Telling that nobody has snapped him yet, the season starts next week. He must be demanding silly money, you’d think he’d be good enough for the prem still. He might be pricing himself out of serie A and la liga entirely.

Will he finally get his Madrid move?

Translation: Courtois was injured this morning in Real Madrid training.

Medical tests are underway.

The cruciate ligament of the knee could be affected.

He left training in tears.

The only massive anomaly in that data is Kepa. He’s performed well by those metrics, but watch him play and you quickly realise he’s absolutely awful.

And he had 3 or 4 absolute howlers last season that if he was able to just keep at a minimum he'd have been better than average. But recently he's been good for a howler and you'd be semi waiting on it.

Really does make a lot of sense. Especially considering they've already spent a lot and will be bidding for Mbappe.

I think he'd do okay there.

Would take a bit of adjusting for their back line though when dealing with crosses and set pieces, Courtois is statistically the best keeper in Europe at claiming those.

He’s far closer to the very worst keepers in the league (if we consider Bazunu an outlier, who had an absolute nightmare, which is depressing for Ireland fans!) then he is to the best.

12-13 goals worse than all the top three, only 5 better than the second worst. Which is broadly consistent with what his harshest critics were saying.

His reputation in Spain is worse than in England. I can't see Real dipping their toes into the de Gea experience now.

Could be a stroke of fortune for DDG, even if he would never wish that on Courtois. We can assume DDG is fit and firing and ready to play in a matter of days, and Real need to decide soon. If nothing else he might get a 1 yr contract and a chance to prove himself in Spain again.

Madrid fans will go absolutely mad when they get to experience his multiple howlers a season.

I would be delighted if he joins them. He deserves it . It's only for one season and Courtois will be back next year. So win win for everyone actually.
