All this Evans talk a player who was back up for us and got let go 8 years ago is all of a sudden good enough again to step in are we meant to be making progress or going backwards ? it's pure sentimentality he wasn't ever a first choice back then I thank him for his time at the club and being a decent squad player for us but no way should we be relying on him in tough games in the premiership or Europe if we get injuries.

You do know we will get either Pavard or Torino to replace Maguire if he leaves?

I'm confused, I thought Evans hadn't been extended yet to a season contract and was looking for options ?

The club did him a small solid and even if he stays he's obviously a very deep squad option and unofficial assistant coach / role model... Or so I guessed.

I think most of us realize that but there is a core of posters who have been banging on about this since pre season began and a quickly debunked article from the Belfast Telegraph has them convinced he is signed and that for some reason this is a good thing. He was a competent squad player at his peak and that was a decade ago. I am fairly sure @massey is aware we are not signing Evans and is just expressing his irritation with those who won't let it go.

We really need to more concerned about Todibo's aerial ability for someone so tall. This is the reason I am edging towards Pavard because not much in it and plays more positions

We sell Maguire then teams know we are desperate and they then increase the price by a few million, better this way and getting who we need in at the right price.
You think Nice or Bayern are completely unaware that we're selling Maguire?

He's 5th fecking choice here it doesnt make us one iota more desperate.

Varane, Martinez, Lindelof, Evans + Shaw, Case ETH has used there. I'm assuming Bailly is off and Mengi goes Amiens on loan.

Even with that, my point is we will definitely know who our No1 target is and have everything agreed/ready to go in short order. There's no way we've got to this stage in Maguire's transfer and suddenly Murtough's realised we need to decide on who to replace him with.
Evans is 35 and finished, and Shaw is our best left back. Varane, Martinez and Lindelof are our three main centre half options and we’ll need a fourth. As you suggest, I expect this is already in hand.

Bayern want to move Pavard this window because he won't sign a new contract. They can see we have a fee agreed obviously but this gives us a credible threat of just walking away if asking price is too high. If Maguire leaves beforehand, the threat is non-credible, as we'd have few other options.

If they Jack the price up then we can veto the deal and keep Maguire, that’s what I believe the club is doing. While else would we be waiting to sell him?

No one said he'll step up, but as a 4th choice who's going to play cup and pointless games he should be enough. Lindelof and Martinez have excellent injury record and Varane is still around so I'm not sure why we should spent more money on another defender who's just going to warm the bench, and let's assume we want someone for this role, surely United can sign any low rank defender from relegation fodder or even Championship team to sit on the bench and give us the sense of "oh, we have a lot of options" nonsense.

But that's not the case is it varane doesn't play every week and Maguire sometimes comes on as sub and the occasional game so your saying a 35 year old Evans is good enough to come on and see out games we need a back up defender one injury like the one Martinez had and we are fecked.

Lindelof is good enough to come from the bench and see off games.

But if we have an injury we are relying on lindeloff playing with Martinez/varane or Shaw missing from left back it's a long season we are In champions league too and the bench needs to be solid aswell having a player leicester let go who is 35 and wasn't good enough for us 8 years ago and got skinned in preseason coming on or covering for us in games is a joke and a backwards step we should be getting todibo/pavard anyway so this will be pointless in the long run I hope.

That's more than enough.

And as I said, if you want a 5th option to warm the bench for the entire season just to feel assured about having options, United can sign a defender from Championship for that role.

Money. Worried that ETH has indicated that he's under consideration for Monday though.
ETH has indicated a lot of things before the transfer window and went on to do the complete opposite...

We'll get a replacement next week and he'll go.

We could also use Bailey as our 3rd choice RCB. He’s on payroll anyway. Then use the Maguire money on Amrabat or Frimpong.

Fecking hell

So Harry’s been made 5th choice CB, stripped of the captaincy and he also knows we’re accepting bids for him

No way he can continue here

I thought this could happen. This is his last mega contract. Go to West Ham and he has to make do with a mere 100k a week.
But when this one finishes, no one will offer him any contract, even Saudis. And he will never feature for England, unless Southgate will continue to call up a player without playing minutes

But this is also the time for him to get a half decent contract and the pay-off from United. He can sit on the bench here and collect his 190K for two years but he's very unlikely to get a 100K contract in two years time and I think he's being offered a rather lengthy contract at West Ham (4 years).

Ole signed him, gave him the captaincy and £190,000 per week ….why leave for less money?

Southgate brought him to the WC despite being more or less benched by Ten Hag since the Brentford game last August so wouldn't be surprised if kept picking him
