He got abuse in a stadium filled with Scots who booed the minutes silence for the last legendary manager to take us to a World Cup (I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it's because he played for Rangers as a kid, because Glasgow is filled with fecking moronic Rangers and Celtic fans).

To quote the great scholar Rick Sanchez; "Your boos mean nothing, I've seen what makes you cheer."

I am starting to admire his mentality. A lot of people would crumble under the abuse he gets.

I think that might be why he stayed at the club and while i don't think he should be here i can't fault his belief in himself

Even both commentators last night said the same, Maguire wasn't at fault, he had to get something on the ball otherwise it was probably going to be a goal anyhow.

But it's fine, people seem to be blinded when it comes to Maguire.
We might've found Maguire's burner account here.

Nah. Not having that. Centre backs on less money than him have the pace and agility to deal with that ball. But hey, he's got nothing to prove eh?

It would be the best for him to go to a club like West Ham and not be called up for the national team, getting out of the spotlight and play at his level. He might be able to add real value and be appreciated by the fans of his new club.
This whole hysteria and discussions about a player who has always been average at best should stop.

Of course he doesn't have a link because he's completely made it up.
It is unbelievable the amount of shite that gets posted on this topic...it would be hilarious to see one of these keyboard warriors front big Harry and watch them melt

The reason for the abuse is because he’s performing badly. Both himself and the England manager haven’t helped him because he decided to stay at United and he’s being selected for England whilst not playing regularly. When he does play his performance are not good enough.

Does he deserve the level of abuse he’s getting? No but help yourself out in this situation. Maguire has made no effort to get out of the limelight. He’s caused the situation now and a lot of fans are fed up with it, and putting the pressure on him. At this point I think it’s fair because he’s woeful when playing, and has been for 3 years.

I really struggle to see how anyone with a functioning brain could not agree that the amount of abuse Maguire gets is absolutely ridiculous. You'd think the guy was Rolf Harris with the amount of vitriol aimed at him.

The people who do excuse it are likely the sad bastards engage in such behaviour and, like angsty teenage bullies, have a tantrum when told that they're in the wrong.

I do fail to see what Maguire is doing wrong here. He might not be to the standard United want but we’ve bought him, he’s honouring his contract, he’s accepted relinquishing the captaincy in a professional manner and has stated his commitment to knuckling down and fighting for his place. I thought that‘s the spirit and desire that you want to see from squad players ?

Who leaves Manchester United for West Ham willingly ? You’d have to be borderline deranged to make that move. Oh and for half the salary. If that’s me I couldn’t care less what a few thousand fans want me to do, I’m staying put.

How can any sane functioning adult say that the treatment aimed towards Maguire is ‘fair’?

What a world we live in, where vitriolic abuse aimed towards a footballer; (simply because they don’t match the required performance standards of a football team), warrants the actions we are seeing.

He’s accepted he isn’t first choice. He has given up the arm band with no fuss. And now he wants to fight for his place. Isn’t that what we want from our players? To fight for a place? Or do we want them to just roll over, kick up a fuss, and breed toxicity?

Some people truly are sad and pathetic.

Well then accept you’ll get the abuse because you’re not good enough (clearly the manager doesn’t want you, the players don’t want you and the fans don’t want you) and you’re holding the club back from a squad sense and economical sense.

Deal with it.

Quite telling that those defending Maguire always descend into emotional outbursts insulting people, whilst questioning the need to insult someone nonetheless

I think those defending him need to question why they use such hyperbole in discussing the abuse he gets. He isn't receiving the vitriolic hate saved for nonces so is the argument so weak you need to pretend that's the case?

The club and Erik were fine with him staying. He wasn't being forced out or told he had no future like some of the others. None of what you claim is clear is clear.

Oh sorry so we just had our captain on the bench and not even played as a 3rd/4th choice CB because we wanted him to stay at the club?

Makes perfect sense. Read between the lines.

The poor Harry, he has great belief narrative needs to stop. He makes weekly mistakes, that cost goals and changes games and has zero accountability. It's not mental strength, it's delusion of his own performances for 2 years now. A man that refused to leave his club due to ambition and greed, knowing he wasn't in managers plans and wouldn't play. He's been protected by British press and media, called out by all football fans and unfortunately booed.

Gareth Southgate has a lot to answer for, you are suppose to get selected for a nation for performing and playing regularly. He gets special treatment and that's what isn't fair. If he was rightly dropped, nobody would complain. It might even give Harry the motivation to earn his place in the squad.
The bottom line is this, if Harry was proving his critics wrong on the pitch, it stops. Motm performances and popping up with the odd goal, most important being a leader on the pitch with consistent performances. Instead we commits weekly mistakes when he gets a chance, then sends out I've got nothing to improve rubbish online after massive mistakes. Media go quiet, then if Bruno or a foreign player put in a poor display they are hammered for weeks. Football fans are becoming soft now, the he's being bullied and targeting nonsense. He's playing at high level sport earning with a massive football club, getting overly paid and can't handle it. If you can't deal with it, leave.

But he’s not complaining, he is dealing with it. I’ve not heard of him moaning about the abuse, on the contrary the other night he said it wasn’t a problem. You run away or you stay and fight, he wants to stay and fight. How can that rare attitude in todays football be criticised ? Why would he care one bit about the economics of a club if that club is trying to drive him out ?

There's a lot here who would quit on playing for United and take a big pay cut as soon as the going got tough. Or at least that's what they are saying they would do.

He has the right to stick around and get his doe. But he didn't consider his mental health when sticking around. He says he will work hard but clearly effort is not the problem. Confidence clearly is where the problem is. He makes these mistakes trying to prove he is good enough but it keeps getting worse.

Oh sorry I was assuming the accounts on here defending Maguire and complaining for him were actually Harry accounts.

I’m sure he doesn’t care about the economics of the club, so how does it make sense you saying he’s staying to fight for his position in the club? You’ve just contradicted yourself. It’s nothing about staying to fight, it’s about staying for the money. Silly.

Usually it is… but with Maguire and him being awful and on a lot of wages. He’s taking up a squad position. If he’d of gone and we could have sold him then we would have brought in another CB to challenge for a starting spot. No matter how hard Maguire tries he just isn’t good enough. We all worry when he gets brought on for 10 mins at the end of games. When Martinez and Varane are both injured, you’ve got lindelof that starts ahead of him sometimes Shaw will go at CB, that’s how much the manager rates him.

That's all true what you're saying - but what is Maguire actually doing wrong in your eyes? Are you expecting him to give up millions that he's owed on his contract at United (not forgetting this isn't someone who's earned £300k from the age of 21 like Sancho - his one and only MASSIVE contract is the one we gave him). Harry obviously still thinks he's good enough, he's an England international and captain, he's conducted himself in a very professional manner - which can not be said for a number of players.

So either we pay him what he is owed (with the difference between the West Ham contract and what he's on here) in order to leave the club or we're stuck with him. But Maguire has done nothing wrong at all, other than not be the level we expected and he shouldn't be ridiculed for it imo.

That being said, I agree that he's taking up a slot, needs to leave the club etc.

I have zero sympathy for the money point, its pure greed. He is already wealthy beyond most peoples dreams, could continue playing for a number of years at a top club and potentially cement his place in England team. Other clubs push out players they dont want.

Ye I agree, he’s done nothing wrong. I blame the club really. A lot of players do get stick for being on ridiculous wages but I doubt Maguire asked for them wages. It would have probably been the first offer we made rather then making an offer where he’s earning like 10-20k more than what he was on at Leicester and then if he does really well that’s when he can get a pay rise. A lot of players would be happy to move to a bigger club and earn like 10k more than what they was on and then they have to earn a bigger contract here. Instead we go and offer him probably over 150k more than what he was earning at Leicester. No wonder we can’t move players on… so I don’t blame Maguire, I blame the club. Can see another case of us loosing him on a free… that’s another massive expensive signing we could be getting nothing back for.

Southgate also needs to take responsibility for the stick that's coming Maguire's way.

The manager has made it very clear that form, game time and level of competition matter very little when it comes to selecting his squad. The latest Maguire, Phillips and Henderson call-ups were an abomination. Kalvin Phillips played a whopping 290 minutes for City in the league last season, 6 minutes so far this season, yet still gets called and and selected for the national team.

He's calling up players who are completely undercooked and not prepared, then has the audacity to criticise others when people have a go at the performances of these players. Do your job, take those that aren't even playing out of the firing line and give it to those that are playing and performing. How Ward-Prowse didn't get a call up is beyond me.

A tragic manager.

The club have a lot to answer for, for sure. Our salary / wages for average players is insane, and exactly why we end up having to pay players off when we want them out.

Maybe the new board are taking a stronger stand, which is why he's still here as the old board (woody) would have just paid them off and bought someone else in on a stupid amount only to be in the same situation in a year or two.

I have zero sympathy for the money point, its pure greed. He is already wealthy beyond most peoples dreams, could continue playing for a number of years at a top club and potentially cement his place in England team. Other clubs push out players they dont want.
It's not greed at all. He signed a contract, we want him out. If West Ham agreed to match his salary, or pay him more then this wouldn't be an issue. West Ham offered him X amount and Harry wants the difference between what WH offered and what he's on at United for the remainder of those United contract years. It makes complete and utter sense. Greed has nothing to do with it, he wants what he's owed.

You've got to remember that Harry only had one massive contract in his entire career - and whilst he has definitely earned more than 99.9% of us will in our lifetime, that doesn't mean he should just walk away from X million. No one in their right mind would do that.

Im not English so I dont mind too much but Southgate is one of the worst managers I have ever seen.
May he stay in charge of England for a long time haha. Sorry but yeah.

Losing Euro 2020 at full Wembley after going up 1:0 in 2nd minute but then not having another shot at goal, its a remarkable achievement.
Losing that is actually hard, you would need to purposely try to lose that.
The only reason he didnt face scrutiny was because the whole racism topic was so hot at the time and the whole discussion turned about that. But ya what a horrible manager. If he was managing United I would be fuming.
There was a rumour that he was approached by United bosses, but I can't remember when or who to replace (possibly before Ole got the job)

Can't believe there are people that don't agree with the completely rational posters in this thread who would all jump at the opportunity to uproot their families, moving away from both their and their wife's extended families and take their kids away from their grandparents, in order to take a job at a company they don't want to work for and live in a city they don't want to live in, for half the money they are currently earning.

I was amongst the few against this signing, when others were excited by another Ole signing. And I've been vocal about what I think of him as a player.

However, I feel like things are going too far now. This is a guy that plays for United and is getting abuse everywhere he goes. I've made peace with the situation (him still being here) because he has long been replaced and is a backup player - he is not an issue right now no matter how much people want to get riled up about it. But one thing I do believe is that we should probably show this guy some support. The criticism is OTT and even I can say that he's not as bad as people are making out. It feels like people are now trying to turn the screw on him to destroy his mentality and play even worse.

Thats literally the life of a footballer. 90% of all footballer have to do that regardless. He is lucky he is part of a small portion who have the power to dictate things themselves. He knows the game. He is not some poor lad.

I shouldn't expect anything but I was mega disappointed to hear that booing. Brown is a Scottish football legend and as you say the last guy to take us to a World Cup.

He is though. He will cost us goals almost every match and forces team to play a different style. He stayed for pure greed.

Every match? He's about 4th choice CB. He's a backup player, not ideal but guess what, having an injury prone first choice CB in Varane is a bigger issue. Is he stealing a living? Because he's spent half his time sat with his feet up since he arrived.

How many games has he started this season and forced us to change our style?
