Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

If you're going to make a point of very publicly digging out one of your teammates you better make sure you've got your own game in order, something that Onana clearly hasn't
No, I don't agree with that at all. As usual people have made far too much out of this nothing incident. They aren't babies. They are incredibly driven, ambitious individuals who want the best fot the team. Can't be all hugs and kisses all the time.

Do people need a reminder of De Gea making a similar mistake away to WBA in first league game.

Would have been interesting to see if we had gone for him if the takeover was sorted. My first choice was always Maignan but with our restricted budget that was never gonna happen.

I saw a poster mention Raya/Sanchez but don't think we had any intention of going for them over Onana, that maybe a mistake but I guess we will just have to see on that one.
How much more expensive would Maignan have really been? Milan sold their best midfielder to Newcastle for just over £60m, goalkeepers tend to be cheaper and we paid £50m for Onana. If anything Maignan may have cost slightly more or the same, ETH clearly preferred Onana for obvious reasons, it was never a choice. Given the quality of our signing I doubt we are even aware Maignan exists.

Signing Onana for £50m because the budget is tight makes no sense. He’s literally one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever.

If he wants the best for the team then he shouldn't have publicly dug out a player who always tries his best but is clearly low on confidence. Maguire needs building up, not dragging down. And especially not dragging down from a gaffe prone keeper. Onana needs to get his own game in order.

Well if you go by reports in The Athletic Maignan option was explored but price quoted for him was €100 m So United didn't pursue their interest further .

All these YouTube video showing how great is his passing and kicking, all the statistics of progressive goalkeeper. If we are City, I am sure Onana would be fantastic but we are not City. Onana is again a wrong buy for ETH, maybe ETH will disagree but he will need to score more goals against the opposition to hide Onana's weakness. Anyway, this team has too much issues to be remote successfully. We probably need another 4-5 more seasons.

I don't agree with the notion of treating Maguire with kid gloves. He's a member of this squad, so he's as accountantable as the next man. That also includes Onana. It's a complete nothing incident anyway. I can't believe it's still being spoken about. Despite being a world class keeper, Schmichael made the odd gaffe. However, it didn't stop him from constantly berating the top class defenders in front of him. The term 'snowflake generation' comes to mind.

Like Antony, he's another player that Erik knew inside-out and back-to-front from his Ajax days.

If he turns out to be another flop, I'm just astonished at how poor a judge of player Erik seems to be.

F**king hell, I coach under 14s/15s. I'm no Guardiola, but after 1 or 2 seasons coaching a player even I'm able to identify their strengths and weakness: "this lad is very poor at saving shots", "this lad is too predictable, he has no right foot and always cuts inside to his left".

Leaving aside the debate of whether the manager should have that much power on transfers (he shouldn't!), how in the f**k did Erik think these two were worth spunking 130 million quid for?!

Disagree. DDG wasn’t perfect, but he was perfectly serviceable while we addressed the bigger issues in the squad. Feels like we might have created another issue in GK, rather than solved one.
Nah. Not true. DDG was a big problem that needed to be fixed. Especially with his contract coming to an end. Giving him a new contract would have been a terrible decision.

Everyone knew what they were getting when we signed this guy so why the outpouring of abuse. He's not as good a shot stopper as De Gea and is well known for a howler. But he gives us much more in possession and commands his area. I've seen nothing to the contrary from him.

If this turns out to be his level then we could have just saved ourselves 45 million and loaned kepa from Chelsea instead at this rate

Unpopular opinion: Lindelof is the worst CB in the last 20 years for this club. And he always gets overlooked by fans in favour of Maguire, Onana, DDG or somebody else.We do not have a CB parnership and our backs (except prehap Shaw occasionaly) are not very good. Bayern created chances so easly and thats not down to him. If you think Onana isnt good you are entitled to that opinion but he just signed and the rest of our "defence" has been here for a long time. Im not saying he should not be criticised but making threads like this while we have so many issues seems extremley unfair. He didnt walk into the team with Vidic and Ferdinand or Bruce and Pallister

He’s should have done better on about 4 or 5 goals he’s conceded this season. Other top keepers might give you 1-2 a year.

Awonyi goal
Rice goal
Pedro goal
Sane goal
I’m 50/50 about putting Martinez own goal on here too

I think a few of us had reservations about his shot stopping when we signed and I’ve seen no where near enough of him on the ball to offset basic goal keeping ability

Why is Maguire determined to try his best when from his own admission he has nothing to prove ? Maguire is simply a player that is not at the level United need in order to progress further forward. This he lacks confidence nonsense is just a deterrent for a player who is not of feasible quality. It's exactly the same as saying Donny lacks confidence it doesn't change the fortunes of the player.

Onana has made some mistakes but communicating with his defence however is not one of them.

I'm sorry but I don't buy the 'he's just joined' angle, I think that's more of an outfield player thing. Yes maybe we won't see the best of his much vaunted ability with his feet and playing out until he's fully settled. But the basics of shotstopping? How to handle a one on one as a goalkeeper? For me that's more instinctual whether you're doing it for a new team or playing a bit of 1 vs 1 down at the park.

The bounce on his arse when 1vs1 was the first sign of what I feared the most about him and the goal last night an obvious howler. That being said a lot of the other goals have gone in haven't exactly been amazing, unstoppable finishes.

When we concede so many clear chances during a match I'm not sure we can get away with having a GK who's so poor at keeping the ball out of net, regardless of what his short pass accuracy is. Even DDG when he joined and was blowing in the wind, his ability as a shot stopper was very clear from early days.

I was never convinced by this signing, particularly at the price point one year after he went there for free. I've seen absolutely nothing from him to suggest my preconceptions were wrong.

People are overreacting, it's been 6 competitive games! How about we get behind our player and give him backing and a chance?
Imo he deserves it more than the rest of our defence but the problem is the defence is so shaky and lacking in confidence at this point that probably Lav Yashin and Peter Schmeichel on steroids could not lift it. I said it before we do not need a world class shot stopper we need a commanding GK (something that Onana is) and a CB partnership of guys that actually understand and respect each other. We do need two CBs and I would say one if Varane wasnt so injury prone

As per the title.
I don’t give a shit about how good he is with his feet or if he can pass, his primary objective is to keep the ball out of the net and he can’t do it.
The commentary mentioned tonight it’s the first season since the 70’s when Dave Sexton was manager that we have conceded 3 or more in 3 consecutive games. It’s not good enough.

Agreed with the bolded part. He's a goalkeeper, not an outfield player. I don't care whether its nerves or whatever, that's he's being paid big bucks. I'm all for giving ETH more time to get us back on track, but it's not looking good for Onana for me.

Raya nearly twice the player for nearly half the money.
This. Statistically Raya was the best goalie in the premier league last season. So we decided to go for......

.... another player that has played under Ten Hag. don't get our club at all. We never do anything that makes sense, we just spunk hundreds of millions on players at whim and the odd time it works it carries us for a bit until it peters out.

Honestly, I believe we need to consider giving a few league matches to Altay Bayindir as the manager has to protect Onana (even from himself if necessary). I say Onana needs to re-focus, work harder in training, and then put himself to the test at a later time so he can show us whether or not he as it. Gotta remember that David De Gea actually competed against Anders Lindegaard for the number 1 goalkeeper spot for nearly 2 years.

It's one thing that Onana put himself in the firing line after the Bayern match, but it is another to show us that he is not that same goalkeeper who fumbled a 2-0 lead in a Champions League semifinal.

You didn’t really buy Onnana on his goal keeping abilities you bought him for his abilities on the ball, I think once you have Varane back you will see a very different style of play.

Is it just me or does he save everything two handed. He never dives with one hand. Isnt this odd? Is his hands weak that he needs both of them? I know a save with both is ok but a lot of the time its quicker and better reach to just go with your leading hand.

It's been six games, ladies and gentlemen. Putting everything else aside for a moment, and there are a number of other considerations which need to be made here, six games is not a long enough time to be jumping to any kind of conclusions.

In fairness where else are they going to get their De Gea fix? It's not as though they can watch him play unless they fly a drone over his garden.
:lol::lol:

Doesn't make sense, because De Gea let in 2 goals like this last season. He did it against Brentford and West Ham. The guy hasn't been a good shot stopper since 2018.

Aye, but he still would've saved 3 of those goals last night, even though he was throwing them in for 4 or 5 years.

Brilliant on the ball but his technique when it comes to actual goalkeeping is absolutely terrible. Looks so odd when he dives or tries to make saves.

A bit like when Ederson first came to City the idea was that you could forgive the occasional clunker if he was helping to create overloads further up the pitch that led to dangerous attacks.
The problem here seems to be that he's given up too many soft goals too quickly and that's caused many to already doubt him as well as the defenders/DM's not having the necessary comfort on the ball to profit from Onana's footwork.
Over time Ederson has improved his shot stopping and has now won the Brazil keepers shirt from Allison.
Will Onana be able to improve his all round game enough to warrant working with him or should United revert to prioritising the defensive side and write Onana off as a failed experiment?
That's the choice the coaches seem to face.

What kind of thinking is that? For 50 million, the first choice goalkeeper should be able to "keep the goal"

Its amazing he got to this age, playing for top clubs and significantly contributed to get to a CL final and nobody didnt notice?
Whatever you are doing for a living, if its not goalkeeping coaching, you wasting that talent.

Only taken a quick glance through this thread and looks like I'm in the minority but am I the only who thinks he's been fine? Even last night - howler of a mistake (shit happens) but after that was solid and made some good saves.

I am just finding it refreshing to have a keeper who is dominant from set pieces - he claimed / punched a few last night which in recent years would have been left to the defence to sort.

If we look at his other performances so far:
Wolves - contender for our MOTM?
Spurs - same as above
Forest - not much to do, he seems to have gotten stick for the Awoniyi goal but think it was just a good dummy. Crucial save late on
Arsenal - solid. Not much you can do for any of the goals IMO
Brighton - 3rd goal - could have done better, otherwise fine.

Once we have players back from injury and a more solid structure in front of him I think we will see the benefits of his on the ball qualities too. Not really had the opportunity to see much of it other than the first half of the Spurs game.

Its the thinking of ETH, he wants a play it out system. We signed Vicario who honestly I don’t think is a top draw keeper as such but he very, very good with the ball at his feet. Your problem isn’t Onnana your problem is not having cbs with the same technique on the ball. There is no point of a keeper technically brilliant if you don’t have a technically good back line to revive the ball.

We have Romero ans VdV who are technically very good, once u have Verane back I think you will be much better. Right now u have defenders very happy to pass back but hide when the keeper has the ball at his feet.

He’s no different to Allison or Ederson… but at United his strengths are not being utilised and his weaknesses are being exposed. In a way it’s like putting Zidane in the 90s Wimbledon team as cm in a 442.

Bur credit to him for keeping his head after the early mistake and also giving the interview. Right player, currently wrong team. Hopefully once everyone is fit and more likely next summer the signings change that.
Allison and Ederson are very different to each other though - as Allison is a brilliant shot=stopper.

I was a fan of DDG and I was one of those who knowing Varane's injury record and our limited budget thought we should prioritise getting a CB over GK if we couldn't get both (Obviously improvements were needed in both areas!). This would have meant an extension for DDG on reduced wages. However now that we have Onana, it's far too early to be writing him off after 6 games as the team itself has been woeful. Had he been an isolated problem, people may have a point but the whole team is poor so its important to get his confidence back and judge him over the course of the season.

I think we've conceded the first shot on target in our last 4 games haven't we? Kinda mad that.
