I'm sitting here, shaking my head and laughing about this at the same time. Didn't expect a discussion about this to be the most well-measured part of any thread ever.
Might also explain why it is not working out for Chelsea despite their 100m+ midfield additions. Without doing the research you would not have figured Ecuador to be topping the list.
Anyway, we cannot have Mount and Onana merrily crossing swords after every team meeting and if Ten Hag can not put a stop to it he must go.

Funniest thing about this are the posters that are always like “ok, name a replacement with pedigree that will continue to move us towards progressive football”

meanwhile Ten Hag is all “hey man, I’m here to play hope and a prayer hoofball”

Zidane I'll give you, but again he had an aura and automatically commanded the respect of a dressing room full of galacticos, thanks to his fame as one of the club's best ever players. There aren't many out there like him.

Arteta had deputised for Pep, so wasn't completely wet behind the ears, but I'll give you that one, he was more of a gamble than the others.

Xavi also, one of Barcelona's best players of all time.

Ange had been managing for years, we've covered that so won't dive in to it.
Your point was that there is no point replacing a manager with someone with a lesser CV. I accept that in the current landscape, there are few available managers who, on paper, have more to offer than Ten Hag.

My point was that there is a numerous examples of managers, with long and successful resumes that have been replaced by far less experiences managers who have gone on to do far better.

We haven't really appointed managers with amazing CV's barring Jose and LvG (but his success was fairly dated by that point). In no world should Ole and Moyes have gotten the job, but I could see where the club was going with appointing ETH. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it'll work out.

Our managerial recruitment has been absolutely shambolic for the best part of a decade, in all honesty. All we've been left with is a poor squad and some second rate trophies despite spending about a billion quid in that time-frame.

Looking at league table there and we have -5 goals, that's shocking lads.

All money spent and that's where we are at.

Brutal
If Moyes had a -5 goal difference in 2013, most people would've demanded he be sacked.
Because standards are now so low, a -5 GD is seen as "not bad".
In the post match thread for MCFC, after losing 3-0, there was a post where somebody wrote that that was not a bad result. I pointed out that losing 3-0, to any team at OT is completely unacceptable.

We seem to spend increasing amounts of money buying expensive players and spend more more money on wages, and get worse.

Ten Hag has said he doesn't have the players to play like Ajax did. Errrr, we're meant to play better than Ajax do mate....

Needing a new manager and a structural revamp aren't mutually exclusive. Continuing as we have been for the past decade certainly isn't working...
When you consistently hire bad managers it doesn't matter what structure you have in place. If we had the right manager we wouldn't need a DOF

How many other well run clubs allow the manager to control the entire show? Squad building, the overarching philosophy. We're still pretending as if another Fergie is out there and it's just a matter of time before they swoop in and save the top brass from having to actually build a proper structure and foundation. It's genuinely pointless sacking ten Hag if everything above him stays the same. Or do we need another ten years of the same shit before the penny finally drops?

Well, having the correct structure means that they play a part in hiring the manager. It has to be better than our scattergun approach.

Which manager is that? Liverpool, City, feck even Brighton all have first rate structures in place that work alongside the manager to steer the direction of the club.

It's such a terrible way of thinking. "There isn't an obvious top tier name that I know about so lets just keep the guy who is incompetent!"

If a manager isn't good enough you get rid of him. Simple. You don't keep him around just for the sake of it just because you don't think you like what managers are available on the market now.

Agree, this 'right manager' cr*p is why we are in this mess. City have built a structure that will survive a change in manager, as have brighton. Top premier league clubs are too big and a manager cant do it all. We really need a top coach with the best support around him

Surprising you don't see the point they're making.

Yeah, because he said he wants quicker and more direct attacks, that has to mean hoofball

No really, carry on with exaggerating.

Exactly. People want a quick fix solution, but there isn't a manager out there that could in essence do what Fergie did. The two best managers currently in their peaks - Pep and Klopp - both have a supporting structure around them. Our club facilitated spending £85m on Antony. There is something drastically wrong with us that goes beyond just the manager. Sorry, but there is no silver bullet for our situation.

All successful top clubs have good footballing structures in place. It's madness that some can't see that we badly need one. I also don't believe that there's this mythical right manager for us.

ETH just cant escape responsibility citing Glazers handling of club last decade or so. In my opinion ETH has been backed better than every other manager we had. We shouldn’t need billions to put on decent performances against Crystal Palace at home. I am not even judging him on the results, its the performance that needs to improve.
He most definitely has. I've noticed the "manager hasn't been backed" narrative has switched to "should have never been allowed to have that much say in transfers, not his fault". People literally using that fact to his defense.

What penny? The one that we successively have made poor managerial appointments?

Joel isn’t setting up the training cones. Avram isn’t telling him to keep selecting Rashford, Bruno or to abandon his principles and try to recreate the Mctominay Brentford experiment on a 90 minute scale to or to sub off the DM at half-time vs City - or to not play the best CB at the club vs City, or to greenlight the Mount transfer if he’s not - or to say Mejbri infuses energy and work rate into our midfield other players can’t to then lock him up in a basement somewhere, or to play Sancho as false 9 throughout pre-season - where he actually looked decent - to then when the season starts never play him there again - OK this last one is moot since he’s been banished - but the point still remains

Maybe Arturo Vidal was onto something when he said “the bald ones are complicated

I’ve seen it translated it to hoofball on the pitch on occasion.

I can't say I'm shocked because the goal difference/goals scored last season was terrible. That was with Rashford pulling the best 3 month goal scoring spell of his career out of nowhere.

There was just widespread denial because of the optimism.

If we had a better structure, we wouldn't have blown through poor managers and let them spend close to a billion quid to assemble the joke of a squad that we have today. The Jose/Ole and now potentially ETH eras look like being an absolute waste of 7 or 8 years.

exactly. ETH just repeating the same rotten cycle where managers are not up to job and football structure doesnt exist so they are allowed to sign who they want. They fail, we have a messed up squad. Next guy comes in, does the same thing. Rinse and repeat. Pathetic.

I’m not arguing against that. However, that doesn’t translate into Ten Hag being absolved of any/all responsibility regarding our table position and performances on the pitch or that both cannot improve under someone else.

Get in Simeone/Conte

Give them full power to sack off the babies that constantly down tools, stop obeying team orders etc that we see year in, year out.

If we aren't going to play attractive football (we haven't for 10 years) then you may aswell get a manager who will at least rid the club of the problem makers. (Besides the board obviously)

There's not many absolving him, barring one or two. Tbf, the ones backing him aren't raving lunatics either like the Jose/Ole fanboys. Thankfully he doesn't seem to have a devout ****, so if he's sacked, I think we'll all just move on with minimal nonsense.

Problem is; if we sack him now with our current structure in place (whatever the feck that is) most feel that we're pissing against the wind and will be back here in another year or two. In isolation, is he doing a good job? Right now, no, no he's not. He had a solid first season but it's been a disaster this season.

I like the idea of Simeone having to breastfeed Rashford if he has a sad face

Yea, this is what I'm seeing. Just because people are seeing other issues that have been going on at the club doesn't mean they are absolving the manager of blame. It just means that there is plenty of blame to go around. The biggest issues at the club were here before the current manager, and will seemingly be here after him. And saying that does not mean that the manager is absolved of all blame for his own shortcomings.

Moyes wasn't. As much as we've criticised him he has a legit right to say the club dropped him in it.

Fellaini your only summer signing post Fergie. What a nightmare. That summer needed to be brilliant.

But yeah the rest of them can have no complaints. Amazing the mess they've all made of it.

Moyes wasn't, but it appeared that he was dicking around a fair bit too. I'm guessing had he made it to the following summer, he would have been backed to a decent degree.

LvG, Jose, Ole and ETH have been impressive in how much they managed to spend to assemble the squad that we have today. We have players from different eras, different playstyles etc. all forming this mismatch of a squad.

A proper structure can make a good manager look even better than he is and can mitigate the damage caused by a bad manager.

Didnt Jose already try all this. He didnt rate Rashford as a United striker, he didnt rate Martial, he wanted Pogba and Lingard gone too.

I hear people saying he needs his defence back first but he did have varane and reguilon available for city and went with different options and I don't think martinez is much better than Maguire, it's just that his short comings get overlook because he's a "warrior"

It also means that we will have a clear plan and vision, which would involve signing a certain type of player to fit that vision and only appointing managers that fit a certain criteria.

Over the past decade we've made some absolutely horrible managerial appointments and bought plenty of utter dross. We literally have had a scattergun approach with no clear plan in place.

Not to defend Woodward but that squad had just finished with 89 points the season before, with no major departures. Why did that summer need to be brilliant? All he needed was a midfielder, which Woody dropped the ball with, but that's not an excuse for what happened in his tenure.

Both he and LVG made the mistake of thinking we could sign whoever we wanted, and they had unrealistic targets like Bale, Ronaldo, Fabregas. But Moyes is the only one who couldn't really blame transfers or a poor squad, however.

Come on, that squad was made up of mediocre players and finished superstars. We can't simultaneously claim that Fergie worked wonders squeezing that last title out of that lot and then also say that Moyes had a title-winning squad to start with. Falling so far down the table so fast under Moyes was such a shock to our entitled asses, but subsequent years have shown that anything else would've been a miracle.
