This season has been an absolute disaster, you can point to the players and the manager but you shouldn’t in all honesty be able to point to referees for more than a couple of incidents. We’re talking about a couple of incidents every game. This is madness. I’ve never seen a season like this in terms of refereeing and it’s impact on us. It’s cost us in both the league and CL multiple times

Seems VAR has taken the game back a few decades. I remember getting that angry against Porto or Barca in CL but there wasn’t VAR to help back then. Now it’s even worse even if the ref don’t see the foul others pointing out things that’s not even there to make their point. This game used to be about the players and skills now is about the primadonna in a booth who wants to make a name for themselves

Why did VAR not look at the elbow to Hojlund's head or the Copenhagen player offside for the first goal?

It was one of those nights where it's incredibly obvious that the ref and his assistants are out of their depth. There was a completely bogus offside an assistant gave against them in the first half just because a few of our players waved that really confirmed it.

If there is consistency in the game, then all of the big decisions tonight (red card, both handballs, lack of offside for their first goal) will be the same in every game. They won't be. It's pot luck down to how a referee is feeling at that moment in time, or some guy sat behind a screen that calls themself a video ref analysing every frame. It just stinks.

All of the big calls in this game were wrong. Not a red card and neither penalties are penalties.

It's concerning how the game has come to this. Every game you see now is riddled with VAR interventions and it's spoiling the game in my opinion.

When VAR was introduced people didn't want it in case it stopped things being talking points in pubs and losing human error- how wrong!

The game is in a bad way. Of the three big decisions, i thought all 3 were wrong. Not that it's solely about intent but there was no intent in any of them. At which stage the game becomes a lottery.
Elbow on Højlund wasn't any less of a big decision. 2-2 at that point and it's least a second yellow if not straight red.

Rashford has no intention of stepping on that player and gets a red card but the bloke who scores their third purposely smacks Hojlund in the head and it’s not even checked.

So their first was offside, their second wasn’t a pen, their third wasn’t even out of play for a corner…

Yeah it's a joke - the club needs to actually say something, the replay of the elbow made it clear he deliberately does it as well.

VAR is really inconsistent. Livid the VAR didn't even bother to check that deliberate elbow attack. 100% red card in my books.

Indeed. City got a penalty awarded to them the following weekend for a sliding defender closer to the kick than Romero was, and it was a pass attempt not a shot on goal; Haaland missed the spot kick. No one mentioned proximity in the incident, go figure. There was another similar call a week or two later.

The Romero non-decision was egregious, only trailing the Diaz offside call for batshittery from officials.
And if proximity is a thing, then non-proximity should apply the other way, ie the defender having time to get his arm out of the way. Yet when Ward follows the ball for 50 yards, turn his back to it and bats the ball away from Rashford it's the correct decision to not award a penalty.

If ETH doesn't speak out against VAR and the targeted harm it has been doing to our team after today then I will never respect him as a man ever and it will just illustrate the difference between he and Fergie

Fergie would never have taken a quarter of the shit ETH has taken from VAR just this season alone

NB; I haven't checked out his post match interview nor have I checked anything about the match after the final whistle as I need time to calm down and vent

We need to fight back or we're going to get ran-over.

Arteta, Klopp and Pep are at the throats of the referees every time a throw-in goes against them, as was SAF, and for good reason.

Referees are basically guessing at this point and if we don't put them under pressure, we make it easy for them.

I count we've had at least, at least 10 big decisions against us this season.

I just don't understand why Højlund isn't a little bit smarter there and stays down for another two-three minutes to force the VAR to have a look at it. I mean if he feels he's been elbowed deliberately then force a VAR check.

Yeah agreed. To be fair goes for the whole team. Stay down, roll around, lots more making a meal of everything. It’s the part of football I hate but it’s how you con the ref in Europe.

This is beyond petty tribalism now, this is unacceptable. Its killing the game.

Football fans are too busy "bantering" each other to realise the game is dying.

You can't referee football using cameras, it doesn't work. The rules aren't black and white, they're meant to be interpreted and applied by experienced professionals.

I was in favour of VAR but we've tried it and it doesn't work. Scrap it or the game is dead.

They should just leave VAR to checking offsides, assisted with an automated system, and blatant evidence of a dive for penalties awarded.

Other than that, zero involvement please. United are depressing enough to watch without having literally all the joy sucked out of watching football by VAR micro analysing every single incident.

Agreed. Ten Hag should just unleash and accept the inevitable fine. Referees know there's no consequence for ruling against Man Utd. It's the easy choice for them. The manager has to change that.

How the forearm smash by Vavro wasn't reviewed. Only God knows.

I think I’m giving up.
Neither pen was a pen.
Rashford is never a red in a million years.
Deliberate elbow smash to the face = nothing to see here.
What is the fecking point of these useless cnuts that are called referees?

Yes, good intentions, but it is worsening the experience of football, and further removing the pro game from the amateur. The decisions you see every day on TV make little logical sense in the sport that most play. Some of the pens we see given are just utterly absurd.

If they were going to bring it it it should have been line decisions alone to start with, keep it away from the subjective decisions and concentrate on improving the human performance first.

VAR is great. The standard of refereeing being at an all time low is the problem.

My one gripe with VAR is that slow motion videos and freeze frames provide no context and make everything look worse than they actually are. Referees should only be shown replays at full speed and nothing else. No slow mo. No still images.

This isn’t really a VAR post but I’m so tired of the way the rules are being interpreted now. Anyone who has played football knows that neither of the “handballs” is in any way deliberate and they should not be penalties.

We also need to go back to a situation where referees consider the INTENT when making decisions on red cards. Accidentally stepping on someone because they happen to get there a split second before you should never ever be a red card.

Just awful rules being applied poorly and the fact that, currently, they seem to largely go against us, with no media at all mentioning how many bad decisions we get, is making it particularly frustrating.

Handballs tonight are just not football, anyone who has played at any level instinctively knows they are not pens, but when you slow it down to super slow mo, multiple replays and you can clearly see it hitting the hand most of that common sense understanding of the game gets removed.

People talking about a legit red card, but this seems a much more obvious source of complaint to me. We've definitely seen goals disallowed in very similar situations.
Look at last night in the Spurs/Chelsea game, the Caceido shot which the keeper saw from the start, was not impeded in any, gets ruled out.

Agreed, I think this rule isn't applied consistently, particularly when it's unlikely to have an impact of a goal. Gets ignored a lot of the time if there's no complaint or the player doesn't attempt to play the ball and then occasionally VAR will intervene. It's as if there isn't a systematic check for this type of offside and it's only flagged if it's blatant or the officials happen to spot it.

It's killed for sport for me. No consistency from match to match, even less from competition to competition and has completely ripped the spontaneity out of it.

I swear it's every match. Genuinely, how many of our matches this season have had a goal wrongly given or wrongly overturned? And that's not to mention the abundance of other shit decisions that have been made across each game, nor the other high profile mistakes in other games.

I'm not forgetting how referees made crap decisions before VAR, but at least then you could understand them. Humans make mistakes. But now, what excuse is there? All it's done is show that there's no bloody consistency in decision making across 90 minutes, let alone from match to match.

Agree with the last part but the consistency from match to match and different competitions was also inconsistent beforehand.
