Their squad is depleted. A good manager would be getting a result here.

Imo today we should go a bit more defensive and focus more on counter attacking. Newcastle don't have their best but it's very likely they'd like to go at us. Our squad currently can't play with a high line against them anyway. The gap between our lines would be huge for them to exploit if we go with our usual approach.

Mctom and Lindelof play, we will get smashed. Simple as that. ETH needs to suck it up and play Maguire and Varane together.

Also, midfield needs to be Amrabat and Mainoo for us to have any chance in hell of getting even one point from this game and even that might not be enough with Bruno and Rashford underperforming so badly the whole season.

    Onana
    AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw
    Amrabat - Mainoo
    Bruno - Mejbri - Garnacho
    Hojlund

Of course this will never happen.

What is the situation with Donny van de Beek ? I cannot find him on the injury list and yet he was not in the squad for the Galatasaray game. Have they totally given up on this guy ? Talking about the worst transfer’s in the history of this club he most definitely make top 3.

Such a strange transfer. God knows how crap he must be in training if he's considered too poor to even get a look in on the bench

The situation is, that he proved to be a bit shit. His level is below par, hence on merit he doesn’t deserve to be selected for match day squads. Other players (Gore, Mejbri) are way ahead of him currently.

I read it somewhere that he'd like to leave for playing time. And I think both the club and ETH largely agree with that.

No chance Obama being dropped EtH confirmed that in the press interview
Maybe it’s difficult for ETH to publicly accept it? It’s always possible to pre-agree a “last minute knock in the warm up” to save everyone’s face

Just a thought, what are the chances of the game being postponed? There is snow and Ice warning issued.
I know the pitch will be fine, more thinking about safety of the fans getting to and from the ground. No dont laugh matches have been called off before for the same.

This is pretty much how most United fans are likely to be feeling. Certainly me.
It is the hope that kills you. And every season I hope that we will turn things around. Last season finishing 3rd was better. But the same basic problems were there and the terrible start this season is a real kick in the guts.

Not a chance. ETH wont drop him
But what makes you think so? He even dropped Antony and Rashford earlier. Yes, it takes more poor performances for him to drop a more expensive player, but it’s not like he never does it

Hi Wilt, I’ve marked this post for us to come back to after the game.

I have a big shed anyway
Hope your shed has central heating ….it’s bloody freezing outside ;)

We need to keep away from their conterattacks, stay away from corners and freekicks. That is it. Their defending is very static because they are pretty big guys so if we can get our attacking players to move for once, we will be fine. We should be ready for dirty tricks by them in the midfield so we need Fernandes, McTominay to protect Mainoo. We need to apply pressure and we need to stand for eachother not to be bullied. Very important that Hojlund bulldoze everything infront of him. He needs to play towards goal and not having his back from the goal.

Hopefully refs and VAR will not having their ABU time again, like so many times this season.

If we beat a full strength Newcastle with a deserving performance then I'd think we have steadied the ship. I'm still not convinced by what I'm seeing from us though, but do think we can get a result against an injury ravaged Newcastle. Our attack has found a bit of form but we still look so easy to play through, even Galatasaray found openings at will.

I'd take a point right now for sure. This is the kind of game we've performed very poorly in under ETH. Away from home, aggressive, physical team. Hostile atmosphere. I fear its got 3-0 written all over it.

    I'd go for...

    GK - Onana
    RB - AWB
    LB - Shaw
    CB - Maguire
    CB - Lindelof
    DMC - Mainoo
    CM - McTominay
    CM - Bruno
    AML - Garnacho
    AMR - Antony
    CF - Hojlund

Ye todays game will show a lot more about us. We’ve been quite solid defensively in the league the last few games. Like you said our attack has found a bit of form, we’ve scored 3 in the last 2 games, we struggled scoring 1 before that. I think this game will be quite similar to the Gala game where it’s gonna be quite open. Both teams today will attack. It’s all about being clinical and how we defend. Wouldn’t be surprised to see another high scoring game. We seem to be involved in quite a lot of them. I don’t fancy us winning if we concede the first goal, Newcastle will tear us apart on the counter if we leave spaces. We need the first goal and to be able to control games better.

Injury ravaged but still hugely organised with a great home record. It is too simplistic to say if we win we have 'turned a corner', but it's certainly potentially a sign.

I think full strength Newcastle are better than us and I'd expect them to beat us. They'll still be organised, as we saw in the league cup where their second string took us apart. But it might be harder for Howe to still select a functioning side with the injuries. I've not seen them play these last couple of weeks so I'm not sure what to expect. But we've got to be favourites under the circumstances.

To be fair, our last league outing would be described as exactly that.
