Must win, they are a point behind us in the table and play tonight against Liverpool and we've had a week rest. Good team but no excuses.

Do we know if we have any players back? Eriksen and Amad have been training for a while, guessing Malacia, Mount, Martial, Lindelof, Maguire, Casemiro & Martinez are a while off?

So, we have been progressively getting worse. But you think it's a pointless measure. Nice, dumdum!

    It is a pointless measure.

    Top 9, why not top 15? 18? 20?

Same as in the ETH thread or wherever it was "worst goal difference of the top 12"

It's using stats based of arbitrarily selected league positions just to be negative for the sake of it, absolutely pointless.

We haven't won a game an away game against a top 9 team since ETH came here and now we play away at West Ham who lie 8th in the table....but yeah, Oranges038 doesn't like it, so we can't point it out. Sorry!

It doesn't put any context on it. It's just an arbitrary meaningless stat. How about a comparison to other teams?

Currently Utd have the joint 2nd best away record in the league this season. Have won 4 from 9, joint with Liverpool, Villa and West Ham and only 1 less away win than City, Arsenal, Spurs and Everton who have won 5.

Last season, Utd had the joint 3rd best away record in the league with 8 wins same as Newcastle and Brighton, 2 more than Liverpool. City won 11 and Arsenal won 12.

    How does that sound?

^ I think you make a decent counterpoint here.

Just fed up of this haven't won away against top whatever teams under ETH bollocks. Take a look at everyone else's away records too, they really aren't that much better overall.

The only real difference is Utd tend to either win or lose, whereas other teams pick up more draws.

I still think that's a valid criticism too, the stats are unarguable. But it needs the additional context.

Kind of game which should suit us - lots of longer balls, direct football, lots of chances to counter against them and a team that concedes a lot of goals. No doubt after a somewhat positive Pool result we get stuffed.

Amrabat and Mainoo at the base of midfield and we have a chance. Anything else and it will be a loss. Simple as that these days.

Went to see United away at West Ham Christmas 2007 and we lost 2-1. Two late goals, it was awful. We missed a penalty to go 2-0 up. Was there last season for the awful 1-0 defeat. I won’t be there on Saturday so maybe we’ve got a chance.

Agree. But he will need to find a place for super Scott Mcstuffins, so Bruno will be on the right.

Did you learn a new phrase "context is missing" and now have to use it a n number of times so that it becomes yours?

The context is pretty clear: we are not a very good team and struggle away against any team that is in the top half of the table. And it tallies with last season where we performed similarly. We have failed to improve despite another 200m or whatever that was spend by ETH to get his handpicked players.

Now our next game, the reason because of which this thread exits, is against a team that in the top half of the table. Which to me suggests that we are going to struggle in this game too and any point gained will we a +ve given our track record.

    Context enough?

I am sorry I didn't lay it for you earlier.

No need to be so condescending.

Utd have a better away win record than most teams in the league, the big difference is they either end up winning or losing, very few draws.

This idea that the away record against only the top 9 teams is some major statistic to judge the team by is just absolute bollocks as far as I am concerned.

Your solution to a very specific stat which does relate to the opponent we're playing is to provide a more general meaningless stat? And that adds more context how exactly? You've just extended the scope for no other reason than it's more positive.

Winning away games is tough that's not new context. For a team to have a successful season results against other top teams is vital. We've been shite against our competitors for CL/EL places home and away. We're playing one such team so yeah it's more relevant than results against relegation fodder.

As in - this one game?
Just the fixture list run in is quite unforgiving for us.

    Everton
    Liverpool
    West Ham

All away with crucial Champions League games inbetween is probably the most difficult run of games anyone is facing this month. We have Aston Villa next too. Crazy.

Yep tough run- on the back of a pretty kind one though.

I got United winning this don't know what it is don't think West Jam will trouble the team perhaps Kudus if he's not marked adequately. Could be clean sheet too.

So selective picking of results against a handful of teams has more context than looking at the entirety of the results against all teams for all teams in the league. Utd have won none against the top 9. A group of teams that changes quite a bit throughout the season.

Or we can say Utd have won the joint second and third most away games of all teams in the league.

Which shows that actually, when compared to other teams the away record isn't that bad and the negativity is overblown.

Yes but up until then we had the easiest fixtures and should have at least 10 points more

Tonight's League Cup results make this a very secondary fixture for us.

We'll go full strength and full pelt at Liverpool. We outplayed them for 45 at Anfield in the league, and whilst they got the better of us eventually we're in with a strong shout if they pick any kind of weakened XI which we expect them to because they play Arsenal at the weekend.

This proved well wide of the mark…six changes for West Ham ahead of a seemingly more important fixture at the weekend!

United win. Only the PL and FA cup to play for now. Got to give that extra 1%, which shouldn’t be hard

So after this torching, they're either playing us heads slumped, or like wild dogs with a point to prove. No in between. Great.

Typical from Moyes and West Ham. Drop their trousers for Liverpool tonight but will be game raised to the max on Saturday.

We game raised to hang on to a draw on Sunday but will revert back to normal on Saturday.

Easy to 'game raise' when you're up against a side with no midfield and limited technical ability.

All these game raising posts are nonsense. Teams naturally will look better against sides who are playing poorly.

I've never even seen the turkey play but i'm willing to give him a shot. Bruno on the right though with McSauce central? Nah
    Bruno and Rashy for me.

till now the excuses were "we play every 2 or 3 days so the manager can't coach the players and they're too exhausted".

After 5 days of rest I don't want to hear about it and the players better show for start some fire and passion.

To win we'd have to score which we haven't done for 3 games.
Which is understandable given the opposition (Bournemouth aside) and injury issues. Considering how negative you were in the pre-match Chelsea thread, I consider your continued negativity to be a good omen for us!
