Maybe if that back line was still suicide high, but I thought at the time it wasn't. Maybe I'm being harsh, I thought Bruno timed it well as he got all the defenders square.
I think if AWB carried on running he still would have been on side but Bruno took a ridiculous amount of time and touches to play it. I think AWB thought he was going to turn around and keep possession so he just stopped his run instead of getting out of position.

He didn't half arse it, Bruno delayed the ball for no reason, both me and my old man were screaming at him to release it a good second or two before he did.

I feel like I remember it differently and Bruno basically got the defenders to square up to him, leaving no doubt that AWB would just stroll onto the pass with no pressure. I'm happy to concede I'm wrong on this as so many people are saying otherwise and I doubt there's going to be a clip to hand.

I've noticed him frequently pressing in the left front line... kinda weird for a right back who struggles with good positioning
He will quite often follow up a press on his side of the pitch, if hes already far up the pitch he will continue forward and press the next player trying to win the ball high up. I can only imagine he's instructed to do this, if this is against how the team is organized he'd probably be dropped. We fill in the position

Anyone got a clip of that no look backheel pass in his own box?
He was caught out of position, again. His reliability on his athletiscm is a worry. You want defenders doing back-heels when defending their box?

He was ok at best tonight. I have no idea what you can expect from AWB. He's not a thinking player... gets caught out of position way too often.

Every full back is caught out of position. It's just the nature of playing that position although I agree that he has that knack of being caught out of position a bit too often.

Other than that, he has improved a lot in attack and never gives the ball away.

Was discussing AWB with some friends and one of them said something which we gave him stick for. But he put forward, what I think, is a reasonable argument in the end. See what you folk think.

He said AWB would be great in MF. Strong, powerful, can run all day, loves to get back and slide tackle, can head the ball, shields the ball well and can hold it. Can play a pass although not his greatest asset, doesn't hide and always manages to find space to receive the ball.

I can just imagine AWB in a single pivot

Other than the not hiding, you could be describing McTominay. AWB in midfield wouldn't work. I'd sooner play Shaw in the pivot.

Good player though, always has been. Gets a lot of unnecessary stick. I think he's a consistently better RB than Valencia and Rafael, which makes him our best right back since Wes Brown. Yes he gets lost sometimes (so does Walker and Trent) and yes he doesn't chip in with goals or assists (neither do our wingers) but between AWB and Dalot I think we have a very capable right backs.

Out of position is tactics not him. He is everywhere. Midfield, CB, on the wing. He is being asked to do this. If he's just gone bat sht and not following instructions he should be dropped. He's not because he is doing g exactly what he is being asked to do and the consequences of that are that he will every now and again not be in the right position

Yeah it's possibly a case that he has a bit of freedom to go to win the ball back in other areas as he's our best tackler and winning the ball back unexpectedly the way he does with those long legs can launch a quick counter if the likes of Bruno or Eriksen is in close attendance and the opposition defence is pushed high

I'd say the most important trait to succeed as a midfielder is being able to receive the ball and turn quickly in tight spaces. AWB doesn't look like that would come naturally to him. Also being a good defender as a full back is a very different ball game from being a good defender in the midfield.

Oh I agree with the bold part. However I think he plays well in tight spaces. Even yesterday he received the ball when under pressure and kept it well. Does a lot of give and work into space to get it back.

The worst at this is McT for me. Who I think hides in midfield.

Anyway it's not a concrete "make him a midfielder" just me sharing what I thought was an interesting conversation

Was excellent yesterday and is quietly having a solid season. He works out of tight spaces well, but he’s still poor at crossing the ball which at this level is very hard to understand.

I see this a lot about AWB and it’s almost always wrong. Let’s look at what you’re saying for the backheel - where else would you like him to be? Every full back in the world has this same issue when there’s a half decent cross. So explain where he should be without teleporting.

He has clearly improved on the ball and positioning, credit to him and the staff.

I see him long term as a squad player who's used as a specialist marker against teams where we need to be really tight at the back.

He's no business being the first choice right back for a club with serious ambition. He's a decent squad player at best.

I struggle to understand why some people don't rate him. He's strong, fast, good at passing/dribbling out of tight spaces. Best ITW 1v1 tackling ability. Blocks a tonne of shots, too.

He has been consistently good under ETH.

I think you are on to something, maybe he should be the fullback to invert and support the midfield because his ball winning ability and play in tight places could be of use there.

I’m glad that he is putting in the performances that he is capable of after a drop in form. I really feel he would be even better in a settled team as obvious as that sounds. The chemistry would highlight his pass and move game going forward and a regular partnership inside him and in front allows pressing and structure. Adds a physicality we need.

Abysmal defender.
Jogs back all the time leaving acres of space behind him and complete unbalances our defence.
Plays with no urgency and no brains at all.

I used to like him but I never want to see him playing for us again

Never seen a defensive fullback be so unwilling to run back with any form of intensity

Constantly jogging back, so lazy

Sooner we rid the squad with attitudes like this the better off we'll be

He's ok when he's playing for his united career. Casual, flat performances like today are too common the rest of the time. I'd sell him in january.

Not a good performance at all, needs to be sold in order to bring another striker.

Don’t know what was going on with him today. Really good against Villa and then today was jogging after 5 minutes and looked as though he’d rather have been anywhere other than on the pitch.

Ignored the man out wide almost every time today.

His positional discipline will never improve. It never has.

Another turd who can’t be trusted to string a couple of decent performances in a row together.

Anyone who prefers this lad to Dalot is genuinely insane, not good enough and never will be. The mentality of a mouse and apart from one on ones doesn’t seem to want to defend. Switches off constantly and jogs back when we’re being countered.
Add him to the bin list.
