Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

Has he? I think I’ve been watching a different keeper, he’s largely been stuck to his line and rolling the ball 10 yards to his CB!
Look at the pass to an opposing attacker that caused Casemiros red card. It’s really been nothing special at all.
You pick out one of the few misplaced passes he made

He's almost impossible to dispossess, hasn't happened once. That makes him a genuine passing option at the back, which helps us keep more possession, thus concede less chances than we would with a traditional keeper at the back like De Gea.

Not only that, but some of the deeper passes he can make to Dalot, Mainoo or whoever is sitting in the #6 position at that moment is also something only elite passer GKs can do.

The howlers have been bad, for sure. His passing is really good, though, nothing will change my opinion on that. Him being incredibly press-resistant is also way more important than most people will realize.

Didn't you know, we ignore the obvious on here when it doesn't fit the agenda. :wenger:

Thankfully Cameroon just scored and, if it holds, will be in the knockout stages. Delaying Onana coming back as long as possible is a good thing. We have to see what we have in Bayindir.

Don’t Cameroon have to win by more goals to go above Guinea? Really hope they go all the way and his return is delayed even further.

They can go in as one of the best 3rd place teams...but they can get to 2nd if the goal differential improves. Senegal is up 1-0.

haven't teams sussed him out though, by not pressing and instead cut off his passing options at the back, forcing him to go long, where none of our front 3 are comfortable in holding up the ball. He gets stick for taking so long to play the pass, that's because he's trying to find a pass, he can't find one and then goes long.

Welp...never mind. Gambia now up 2-1. He could be back for the weekend...damnit.

And then they tied it! Still need one more. Crazy game...

AND TOOK THE LEAD BACK in the 90th...then it looked like Gambia scored again but it turned out to be a Hand of G-d situation that got caught by VAR.

Cameroon wins and moves to 2nd in the group. Onana stays!!!!

It is a remarkable thing, unprecedented in my experience, that a supporters of a top club rejoice at hearing of the delay in the return of their starting keeper.

Mad to see Utd fans celebrating our first choice keeper missing games for us. I’m happy for him anyway as I’m sure he wants to do well for his country, but it’s a blow for Utd.

Its very funny how the internet polarizes people so you've people here steadfastly saying he's been good - which is horseshit - and people using stats like the 0% saves at AFCON bollocks.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. He's been a bit shit, and he's looked clumsy and used a very odd technique at times.

If he continues the way he has, getting a second season is a question. If he doesn't improve in that second season, he will 100% be gone.

Yes agree with you. We have also seen as many wayward medium length passes as good passes as well. I hope Ratcliffe is looking at the goalie dept in the summer as he is not an elite gk

If you were looking for the truth at worst you'd have him as a bit below par due to his CL performances being very poor. In the league he's been decent, a few errors but also some very good saves.
He can also actually pass the ball which is nice to see from a United goalkeeper.

For those praising Onana’s press-resistant capabilities, what do you think of his shot-stopping ability? He has let in some very soft goals this season and often seems flat footed.

That's a good thing I think - teams not even attempting to press the keeper is better for our build up play. The going long bit is an unrelated problem.

He's been average/slightly above in that regard. Getting down to some of the lower shots, like the 3rd goal he conceded the other day, seems to be a weakness for him.
He does this thing where he seems to try to predict where a shot is going very early sometimes and I don't know if it's a genius move or incredibly daft. Against Brighton he made a brilliant save from Fati doing it, but he did it against Bayern and the guy didn't shoot so he pretty much gave him an open goal.

From 3 shots on target. It can easily happen with such a monumentally small sample size in international tournaments. Here’s an example:
Was it only three shots on target in the entire game?

Edit: it was but still, it's very rare.

Might value your opinion more if you
a) didn't start a stupid thread.
b) hadn't posted in this thread just before showing your ignorance of his passing ability.
His passing ability has been way overblown to cover up how shit he actually he is at trying to dive to save shots, his positioning, his howlers.

the amount of times he’s just hoofed it straight out of play is ridiculous yet he gets talked about as if he’s prime pirlo by some.
edit: I’m sure I’ve seen someone say it’s like having the passing ability of scholes in goals

The problem is that considering how bad the last two transfer windows ended up, how can we be optimistic for those accountable to identify any decent player, Bayindir included? He might turn out to be even worse.

What average are we talking about here? If you're saying an average goalkeeper of any level, I'll accept that, but he's been well below average for an elite professional goalkeeper. The shots he routinely lets in are shocking.

That's not even remotely true.

His general passing is very good, going long is always going to be a lower percentage pass and so will go out of play. It's also clearly not really his preferred option is it?

Well now you need to define what elite level is.

Of course it’s true. Saying he can pass like scholes. That is over blowing his ability to the extreme! And the reason for doing that?

One person saying that isn't his passing being overblown, it's one person overblowing it. It's not a thing that's being said by even half a dozen people.

You're then deciding someone did that to cover for his weaknesses rather than the more logical conclusion of them just being very impressed with his passing ability.

What’s awkward is your obsessive defense of this VERY average keeper.
Yet again, you made a weird thread to slate the guy.
You at one point had to walk back on that after he had a good run of performances before changing the title again because of an error. Now every time we concede you seem to be in here calling him rubbish no matter if it was his fault.
But sure, other people are obsessed.

You’re doing it yourself. He kicks the ball out of play too much imo. But for you it’s excused because it’s a long ball. Then all of a sudden this great passing ability is just reserved for some short passes he can make.

we won’t agree, I think he’s a mess of a supposed top level keeper. You don’t. That’s fine.
