Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Thought that was a very professional performance from us. 3-0 win away from home in a semi-final? Yes fecking please. Thought we were excellent and Amorim set us up well. He's got Casemiro and Maguire playing really well.

The concern with Spurs is that they're a Prem side that have beaten us three times this season and we struggle physically against these Premier League teams.

But then on the flip side our players have thrived in big one off games time and time again so you'd be foolish to write us off.

Anyway let's get over the line next week first!

In Amad’s 11 games prior to the injury, he played WB just once.

I’m pretty sure he was moving to WB during games no? So he’d start at 10 and then move to WB later in games, and sometimes vice versa.

Besides, at the time he was at WB, fans were moaning that be should be used as a 10. The problem was he was the only good thing we had going, so he looked better than anybody else in either role. It was a phase of figuring out what worked best for the team, but it was clear (along with Quenda at RWB for Sporting) that he prefers that threat at least from RWB. It was the first position he played Amad, if I remember right.

Also would be classic Spurs that having had our number in the last few games they'd go and lose the one game a trophy is actually on the line.

But as you say lets get there first tying it up next week. Also no guarnatees about Spurs given Bodo's record at home and also Spurs being Spurs

Ruben needs to be smart with his selection in the second leg.

I’d definitely play Shaw as LWB and replace Ugarte in the middle with Bruno while Mainoo plays in place of Bruno.

Basically the team that should play the final should play the second leg to get in rhythm together. We can make timely substitutions at the 60 min mark to avoid injuries/suspensions for the final.

But it’s highly imperative Ruben is mature with his decision making. Sticking to players who are a liability will cost him at the crucial moments.

Potentially losing to Spurs of all the teams and that too in a final and because of poor selection/decision making will be unforgivable.
You drop one of our best players for the season for Mainoo who’s been underwhelming at best throughout the season?

It’s a serious consideration that needs to be made. I’m not sure Mainoo gets the nod at 10, but Amad at 10 & Bruno CM > Ugarte CM & Bruno at 10, for me.
I actually agree with this. Mainoo is different class on the ball vs Ugarte.

Amazing

Hopefully we win this competition

Hopefully. Spurs have beat us 3 times this season already though. And a spurs Utd final is essentially a premier league game where we always struggle. Kind of hoped Bodo would derail them

The season has been shocking almost throughout but i am, maybe strangely, confident about him.
Bruno found a new level when Ruben took over.
Casemiro is back from the dead and playing like he is desperate to win stuff again.
Zirkzee started off very slow but has improved his fitness and intensity massively. Shame about his injury.
Maguire has stepped up and played some of the best football of his career under Ruben. Him beating a Spanish defender with flair tonight will go down in folklore and comes from him playing with huge confidence.
Garnacho has stepped up his intensity since Ruben asked to see more from him.
It seems the players are responding well to his coaching/personality which is a very positive start.

Still lots to figure out for him but with some good work in the transfermarket we might surprise a few next season.

Felt very strange watching the second half.

United controlling a game at 3-0 what was that witchcraft!?

Well done Amorim, and well done to the squad for being a wonderful cup team the past 2 years.

Great result

The biggest worry was quite apparent again tonight - the centre backs passing. He needs to get them passing between the lines. It’s the key to unlocking this formation. That first half hour was painful because the CBs + Ugarte + Dorgu refused to progress the ball.

They were literally passing the buck until a mistake was made.

Still not confident that he can overcome Spurs in the final, given his awful record in the Premier League, but fantastic night for him tonight.

My worry is that because of the way things have gone he may think the premier league needs a more defensive WB. That and he seems to be a fan of Dalot. Hopefully not and we see Amad or a similar type of player there more often than not.

They’ve actually been a decent cup team for most of the last decade since Jose was here. I think this will be the ninth cup final?

Itl seem like a home game now we've just won 3/0 at that stadium.

The thing is with Dalot is that he’s not exciting for the fans, but he’s a bit of a dream player for a manager. He works tirelessly every game, he can play in multiple positions and he has great attitude. So I do think there may be the potential that he shows some loyalty to him. But he can’t ignore how much more effective his Sporting team were when he started to use more offensive minded players there. Our wingbacks get the most space, so they simply need to have the quality to make something of it.

If we’re could have got Quenda then I do think he’d have gone down that route and played him there. Perhaps there’s another option, or perhaps he uses Amad there and switches it up depending on what we need. It sounds like we’ve some good options in Mantato and Kamason coming through, who are apparently close to being given game time. So maybe he’ll look to use them also.

He has definitely played a role during the season but I don’t think he plays as a part of our best 11. Specially not against high pressing teams.

To be fair I'm not having a go at Dalot, Amorim likes him for a reason. Just when we play fullbacks in those roles the whole system becomes more defensive and that won't work long term imo, so I'm not sure where he really fits in, assuming Amorim thinks the same.

You may not like the idea but that is the reality. Changes in the hierarchy have been made in the background.. however; you cannot make squad changes in the background...

Transfer windows are only open during certain times of the season, so you cannot make changes required.

I understand the need for better results but these players have shown for 3/4 years, they are not capable of consistently performing.

Why do fans insist on short term purple patches over long term consistency?
They don't. It's just that there's an alternative view that the journey toward long term consistency might have involved changing things more gradually so that the results and reputation of the club didn't suffer even more than they had already, especially given we were clearly ill equipped for said plan.

It is what it is though, we're near the end of the seadon and Amorim went all in. The league position is pathetic but it looks like we'll get a chance at winning the Europa League which might be the sign of good things ahead.

Hopefully we get a couple of decent attackers in and that's enough to have his plan win us more games next season.

Huge win. Now just need to keep our heads at home and then deal with Spurs

Winning this competition would be a huge boon for him and accelerate his team building considerably

Or Bodo. I'm really not expecting those spurs sicknotes to stay injury free in the arctic on an artificial pitch.

On the contrary, having the third CB allows us to create those triangles on either side of the pitch, which means CBs pushing up knowing there is cover. Not saying it means them playing as a winger, but it does give a little additional license generally.

Perhaps, but that seems a very generous interpretation of Ruben's system. There's no 343 system I've ever heard or seen that has a CB flying down either wing to send a lateral cross deep into the box.

On the other hand, if what Ruben is developing is a total football system, where every player has a role at every position -- a CB as winger, a 9 at CB and so on -- I'll buy a ticket for that, but sending Maguire forward is more adaptation to circumstances than system.

But this is nitpicking. Tonight we regale in our glory and bask in our splendor.

Random one, but did Sheffield United not employ something like this when they were last in the EPL?

Not really getting the Spurs fear to be honest, though it’s probably 50-50 in terms of the potential final. People are ignoring the context of EtH’s suicide football in the first game and then a couple of close games when our team didn’t have the same cohesion or squad depth as now. I can’t even remember the 1-0 defeat in terms of how either team played.

Still hoping for a United vs Bodo/Glimt final. From what people are saying it sounds a horrible ground Spurs are playing at.
