Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Casemiro hit the post, keepe made 2-3 great saves, usual poor finishing by Garnacho and Hojlund, so we created more than enough chances whilst keeping them out.
Amorim did great today managing the game after the red.

I guess Regulus, Garethw, Lichavidich etc can have 2-3 days off from this thread, I'll see you guys when we concede against Brentford!

Haters still trying hard to discredit him for the win tonight. "Yeah we won but it wasn't perfect so he is crap". Give it a rest, Jesus. You'll get your chance if we don't win the useless rubber on the weekend against Brentford.

Great management tonight, against a strong La Liga side who you just knew would be up to their antics if they had got a sniff. Subs were great; Amad/De Ligt/Shaw got a run out. Most important difference these days is everyone that comes on doesn't look lost and knows how to play the system and what they need to do, something we haven't seen in a while.

Now the players just need to keep their cool and play their best back at OT.

Yes the pressure is on next season to start well, at least to be making progress and being up towards the upper places of the table. All depends who is signed during the summer and what, if any, European football we have
I think thats fair. I can't be doing with another season like this though.

Got it right tonight. We were unlucky not to have a 4 or 5 goal lead to bring back to Old Trafford.

Often end up on the right side of the result in a big game which is great. The challenge is getting it on a consistent basis.

I think any sane united fan will want to see the under 18s playing at the weekend and not care if we lose 5-0

Likes of Shaw, De Ligt, Mount, Mainoo and Amad could do with some more minutes too.

Good result. Good performance. If we can see this in the PL then he'll convince me.

I liked seeing the wing backs high up the pitch. Seems to be the key. A discussion for another day; I'm not sure how that can work in the PL.

I'm not an Amorim in guy at the moment, but credit where credit is due. More please.

Be interesting to see how his style of play seems to be more fruitful in Europe vs Domestically and that it works. Hopefully with better players it can work in the PL too.

It's the wing backs, surely. Clear as day today, they were pushed right up the pitch.

Something that doesn't/can't happen in the PL

Who was the poster that continues to say that the manager never adapts or changes the shape of the team?

I mean, it was already obvious before today that he does do that, of course. Today just reiterated that.

Good game management in 2nd half and good subs. Bilbao were clearly better for first 20-30 minutes but I always expected that so it wasn't surprising.

Will be interesting to see the lineup on Sunday given that we're 3-0 up in Europa now. Don't think it'll change much in Amorim's mind but players like de Ligt, Shaw, Mainoo and Amad could definitely start that game.

Ruben needs to be smart with his selection in the second leg.

I’d definitely play Shaw as LWB and replace Ugarte in the middle with Bruno while Mainoo plays in place of Bruno.

Basically the team that should play the final should play the second leg to get in rhythm together. We can make timely substitutions at the 60 min mark to avoid injuries/suspensions for the final.

But it’s highly imperative Ruben is mature with his decision making. Sticking to players who are a liability will cost him at the crucial moments.

Potentially losing to Spurs of all the teams and that too in a final and because of poor selection/decision making will be unforgivable.

Brilliant performance today. Hopefully it’s all starting to click.

He’s gotta be delighted with that, great chance now to salvage his start and our entire season. Maybe even his United career.
Could be absolutely massive for him this.

Very pleased he stuck Amad on at WB, and he managed the minutes superbly in the second half.

You mean give away a throw in our own half against Brentford in the first minute

Amorim has explained what he thinks and I agree - other PL teams are too physical for us. In the EL we’re the bullies against these Spanish teams. Our press is more effective, we win more duels, our energy is an issue for opposition in the EL. In the PL too many games we are second to everything, our press easily bypassed at times, teams possess players who are too quick or powerful for us to deal with.

Fortunately I think the profile of player we are linked with will turn the tides due us in the PL. Cunha, for example, is a beast in all of these aspects. Some of the best teams in the league have struggled with him this season.

It's much easier to do that in Europe that's for sure. I guess the gamble is whether we can recruit well enough to make this possible. I think we need player who can progress play and carry the ball in the middle.

The system sure does look good against 10 men.:)

Kidding aside we got the first goal and penalty against 11 men, and did well to manage a hostile crowd and a tough start. To be fair the issues we had in the first 20 minutes were mostly self inflicted (Lindelof inflicted).

It clearly works in Europe, its just a question of whether he can get it to work in the Premier League.

I do really prefer the formation with Amad at wing back, and hope next year we see that more often.

Also he needs to work on making the other players really want to create goals for the striker and take pride in it. Hojlund has been bad but you never get a real sense that the players around him are pulling for him to succeed. Whoever the main striker is next season he needs better support.

We also need to find a way to be able to keep the wing backs like wingers with the ball. Feels like the biggest visual difference for me between the EL and PL.

Maz also smashed one off the bar.

For wingback when someone like Amad plays instead of a defensive player like Dalot it pushes the other team back because they actually have to worry about him. I hope he realizes this and goes with more tricky attacking options rather than just pace and athleticism.

To be fair I think he does realise this as that’s exactly what he was doing until Amad got injured. Amad has pace and athleticism to go with the technical ability, and that’s what you get in the PL. For a small guy, Amad is a little fighter and has that Messi like strength on the ball.

I'm resting almost everyone on Sunday still.

We saw what happened against Lyon when the players got fatigued. We cannot risk the players tiring out again.

Better to be lucky than good. 3 knockout matches, 3 red cards for the opposition. Long may it continue!

I'm not sure "the system" had anything to do with any of the three goals tonight. What system has Maguire flying down the right wing for the inch-perfect cross for the open net goal off a second header? Another cross led to the foul which led to the pk, and the third goal was all grit and determination, with a lovely flick by Ugarte.

But we came in with belief and the manager gets a ton of credit for having the boys play with belief.

No excuses, he has to win that trophy now. Win it and I can stomach him still being here in July.

Yeah think with Dorgu pushing high and wide on the left side and Amad doing the same on right side is way to go for the future hopefully in this system.

Maybe bringing in another attack minded RWB in summer along with Cunha and New CF
Means we can utilise Amad as a 10 as well in games.

Maybe instead of whining in the manager thread mid-game you should enjoy the match.
Exactly my feelings.
The Cafe these days feels like RAWK when we were smashing it and they were shite.
It's time to get behind the manager and players because it's starting to feel that we have bottomed out and we will start climbing back upwards pretty soon.
Or is that the wine talking after a glorious victory?

Can someone tell me that if we get through, we've got a great chance against spurs if they get through? Our returning players maybe ??

On the contrary, having the third CB allows us to create those triangles on either side of the pitch, which means CBs pushing up knowing there is cover. Not saying it means them playing as a winger, but it does give a little additional license generally.
