Lamine Yamal

That is what the word 'flair' means. There is no reduction. Flair = flamboyance, flash. Not just being able to control a football.

But this is interesting. You think that players now are not just better athletes (which we all accept) but actually more skilful than players in the past?

Determining this scientifically for the average player then and now is very difficult, but if what you say is true, then why aren't the best players now more skilful than the players of yesteryear? Cos I don't see anyone running round now who can touch Maradona, or Baggio, or Romario.

I forgot about this

But I think that the technical level of the average footballer has improved. There's just more structured training, more emphasis at clubs on playing in a structured way instead of giving the ball to your maestro and hoping he conjures magic. That's what I was referring to.

Maradona levels? I think it's literally impossible to be clearly better at football than Maradona (maybe Messi came close), but such geniuses come around once in a blue moon. But for what it's worth I'm not saying our best beats the best from back then.

For the best of the rest back then (Romario/Baggio), can I say they'd be by far the best players in the world today or over the past 5 years?

Yamal is incredible talent.

What set Messi apart was his end product. If Yamal is equally effective he will be a pain the ass like Messi. Amazing talent and he has just begun.

Nope, that was a consquence of his talent and real rare specimen he was and even still is.

Great game by the kid without doing numbers, that is the trademark also of great players that these late years obsession with stats tend to forget

It’s his passing that stands out for me. Players can dribble, players can shoot….but rarely do you see such inventive passing in a player blessed with the other two traits in abundance.

Lots of people talking about Messi for obvious reasons, but watching him play reminds me a lot more of Henry

Poor bastard.

He got the Messi treatment from his own players who shoved him the ball at every possible opportunity and just went, "Do something"

It's nothing short of a miracle that he won about 90% of his one on one duels. Can you imagine anyone else having that responsibility.

He is a player closer in style to Figo and the less frantic Ney than the comparisons thrown time and again..he has a bit of Titi too. And he still has to grwo in size, he still is 17 and looks like he can be taller in time

Also the whip he puts on shots and crosses without apparently any effort . Unreal.

Taller? Typically people stop getting taller at the end of puberty in men that’s 15-17 years old. I don’t think he’s going to be getting any taller.

Most of this is fair enough. The last paragraph, is that a question to me?

Yet another incredible game I thought until he hit the post and decided he's going to do it all on his own and made some poor choices. But he'll learn with age, I have no doubt about it. Has all the talent and tools to dominate the next decade.

That's a question to me

But let me ask you this... The tier below Maradona, if they were imported into today's game, do you think they would be substantially better than the cream of the crop we have today?

He's probably the best player in the world which at 17 is ridiculous. Lost some composure in extra time, but he's unplayable. How the feck did these cnuts replace Messi with a teenager like him
It's pretty fortunate

What's clear now is that you can't leave him one on one. If you do, he will beat the defender 99% of the time. Even if you double up (which Inter were doing all game), he can often beat both defenders. That is crazy ability. The finishing will improve, and some of the more sloppy elements of his game will be ironed out. Sky's the limit.

Baggio and Romario? Yes, I think so.

Not really, there are lads that have a last stretch at 18/19

Finally a "normal" performance. Which he was still great, just not an unstoppable force of nature single-handedly tilting a match his way

It depends. Some men can grow until 21-22. It’s not the norm but quit commun.

Even then, he is another class. Best player in the World right now, by far.

If Sommer was 10-15% worse today Yamal ends this game with two goals and we're talking about a legendary CL semifinal performance. Wouldn’t call it a “normal” performance, Sommer denied him really well and he was a bit unlucky

but for all the praise I have for him at least he shows he’s human - his extra time greediness was really bad and some of the decisions atrocious. Normally I’d say he’s on the other side - very much in Barca spirit - where he’d pass when many would shoot or dribble

He actually tends towards the opposite which is a good thing as it's lovely watching him play.

Hope that part of his game doesn't change.

But he was also very wasteful. Sure Sommer pulled off a couple incredible saves, but also he wasted two 1vs1

Of course, but I watch him a lot and still see a lot of those passes for a tap-in. No denying he's a gem for the fact he's not scared to take the ball and attack with it.

I mean, every single player on the team tried to get the ball to him at the earliest opportunity, seemed pretty content for him to be greedy and he almost made something happen every single time. He's phenomenal.

Amazing player. Absolutely Love the bravery.

If Pep coached Yamal, that kid would be playing *death by a million back passes to my fullback* football

Messi is a supreme passer himself.

Pep makes exceptions for the most creative players in his teams, Yamal would do just fine under him.

I've only watched him at the Euros and in the two legs vs Inter, but he definitely seems to have gone up a level over the last 10 months. Now he looks like the complete footballer (at 17!)

Bit harsh considering how Pep used Messi. Just because he did it to Grealish who was never special, doesn't mean he would do it to truly special players

Did you somehow miss Messi with Pep?

The whole “Pep killed football” thing is so stupid because so many people misunderstand it. it uses a positive ( Peps team usually are high scoring) as an a negative (copycats cant do it like him).

I’m getting “but Messi” pushback

Agree to disagree.

My point is based on Pep’s evolution. He became extremely risk averse over time. Playing 4/5 central backs. Prioritizing control over everything.

Would Yamal have been given the freedom at 15, 16 or 17 to express himself and discover his limits with the current version of Pep? I’m not convinced but It’s all hypothetical.

People are being very harsh about taking it into the corner. Very few players in that position are doing that and he was a couple of inches away from wrapping it up. Thought he was brilliant today.

High scoring but it’s mind numbingly boring to watch (for me at least!).
