It's Ours For Keeps
They've gone feckin mental this summer. There's hardly any moves which I've thought have been good value for money, less that constitute a bargain. Anyone with any sort of potential or clear ability has costs a feckin fortune and average players are £6M a pop

Mido for £6M....bizarre

It's worth so much to the clubs to stay up that they are trying to spend to ensure their premiership survival

Considering it's £30m just for being in the premiership for a season, 2-3 new players for £5-7m is well worth it

As you might guess I am a big fan of Brucie but i think he must have taken leave of his senses.

I think Mido for 6 million is a fair price, properly the maximum you would pay for him tho. Taking into account his age and ability, Birmingham have good a good deal if he keeps them in the premiership.

I would not have him in my side a poor team player who has an inflated opinion of his own ability which is limited.

Still havent reached the level when Zizou left for £46M
I reckon we are back at that level now. If Kaka, Ronaldinho or Ronaldo were sold tomorow they would all go for that kind of figure. Maybe even higher.

The transfer fees this summer are all about the extra TV money. In total the premiership clubs have an extra £400m in TV income this year. A huge chunk of that is going straight out on transfer fees.

This may well get worse in the next few weeks as the teams who haven't made all the signings they need to start to throw desperate money around.

Just because Liverpool have signed a player for more than £10 mil doesn't mean that the transfer market has gone mental. The prices have always been astronomical in deals involving the big clubs BUT one can't also deny the impact of the new TV money. Get used to it dippers, quality players cost money. The same way Dean Ashton cost West Ham more than £7 mil a few years back.

I think £30 million for Rio Ferdinand takes some beating when it comes to paying over the odds for a player :wenger:.

Good centre half, but £30 million for a defender FFS.

To think, some of you guys reckon Torres was overpriced

You'd pay "£30 million for a defender" if it would win you the league. Bet he looks better value at £30 million than Torres does at £24 million if we win the league again and you don't.

Not to mention the fact that (while £30 million is a lot of money) he'll have probably been the cornerstone of th defence for at least a decade by the time he retires.

Definitely the tv money.

That price for Mido is hilarious, but no more so than some other transfers - witness the crazy prices quoted for Bent.

I actually think that it is Liverpool with Torres, and United with their three 'big' signings, who have done well - although all but perhaps Hargreaves represent real risks adjusting to the Premiership.

Babble.

How well has Ferdinand done for us?

We've won the league twice, appeared in 3 FA Cup finals, and won the League Cup since he joined the club.

He's also scored twice against your lot.

Rio was a bargain, he is class. Also in the end we got a 5m discount for paying Leeds installments early whilst they were getting done up the shitter for money

So you reckon if we'd have paid £30 million for Rio a few years back, he'd have won us the league ?.

This thread is about overpriced footballers. IMO, the amount of money Ferguson paid for Ferdinand was ridiculous. Remember, this was in the pre-Abramovich days aswell, so its not like he had to compete with Chelsea is it ?.

Your manager paid just over £7 million for Vidic a couple of seasons ago. Dont know about you. But I dont reckon Rio is 4 times the better player, so why pay 4 times as much ?

in the large scheme of things rio was overpriced.

however, we desperately needed a decent cb after leaking in for almost two seasons following the exploits of fabien and lauren blanc, so we made signing rio a priority - and paid over the odds for him.

it doesn't take away the fact that he is a very good footballer, mind.

If you want good players you are going to pay a lot. If you want the best you are going to have to pay even more. Ferdinand is one of the best.

Weak argument.

Didn't David May win the treble with your lot ?.

I wouldn't give you 30p for him, let alone £30 million.
You'd rather Carragher then? :smirk:

On another note, the market has been crazy for a while. The two latin players that we bought were stupidly overpriced, Torres was stupidly overpriced, most of the Chelsea squad was bought for inflated fees...

David May was in the squad. There is a big difference between his contribution as a squad player and Rio who has basically played every game, free from suspension, since he came from Leeds.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he was a bargain for 30m (or 25m? Didn't know about the discount) even though he has been a good investment.
Of course the down side has been his occasional lack of concentration, the missed drugs test and resulting suspension, and the contract saga. I think if it were not for these reasons, we could say that it excellent value for money. However, he's still not that old and if he can continue to be the backbone of our defence for the next four seasons, then by the end of that we can look back and say it was money well spent.

We paid what we had to in order to get Ferdinand in our cluches. Fergie obviously thought he was worth the price. Can't really argue with him.

Darren Bent for over 16 million is possibly the stupidist transfer fee in the history of football

Bent £17M, enough.
I'm all with you here. 17m for Bent. All the years I've been watching football and now this. It really makes you wonder if some managers know what they're doing. Biggest flop of all time. I say he'll get 3 goals this season.

Age had alot to do with it. I think Rio was 23 when he signed for Man Utd. I still don't think he was worth all of 30 million but chances are Man Utd will get at least 10 years out of him which at 3 million per season (obviously plus wages) doesn't sound quite as bad.

Thing is, the price is pretty much irrelevant, so long as you can afford the player.

The problems start when clubs start spending money they can't afford. Leeds found that out the hard way, and you'd like to think others would know better.

The sort of money United have been forking out does make you wonder about the risk involved though

I did laugh when you spent £30m on Ferdinand. Much as I did when Leeds spent £18m on him.

Thinking about it, if you didn't, some other cnuts like Inter would have.
