He's not that young any more. He used to star for Spurs but arguably Jenas's meteoric rise has overshadowed him.
Meteoric rise? He improved a bit under Ramos but he's quite an average player. He used to run about like a headless chicken and do very little else, now he runs about with a bit more direction. But that's still pretty much all he does.

An average midfielder.

If Frank Lampard can make it on the big stage, I don't see why Huddlestone cant. Good player, but has a lot of improvement to be done. Lots of potential.
Because he can't score deflected goals on a consistent basis

I can't believe people are vouching for another JOS. The boy lacks all essential attributes required of a midfielder, meaning that he is too slow in movement and thinking, he can barely tackle, drive forward, or pass it decently. Don't get fooled by his once in a blue moon decent execution of a hollywood pass. He looks drugged up and sleepy most of the times. He can only strike a ball cleanly given the space BUT how many teams will actually fail to close down a table mountain?

He is a shit defender and not all that versatile. He's a feeder club JOS

I hope PeterStorey sees this thread.

This is inaccurate in several respects. Whilst not being fast moving or very mobile physically, Huddlestone is very quick-thinking and usually knows what he's going to do with the ball as soon as he receives it (or sometimes even before it actually arrives with him). He also has very quick feet, especially for a big man: he usually releases the ball far more quickly than most players. "Drugged up and sleepy" is very far from the mark, as is "lacking all the essential aspects of a midfielder".

And to say that he "can't pass decently" is just plain absurd - he is one of the better players around in that respect.

Huddlestone is a good play-maker, albeit better in a more attacking role than defensively. He is also just 21 years old, good at delivering the ball from set pieces and has been a key factor in the recent successes of the England U-21 team.

I'd also add that the various jibes about his weight are out of date: Huddlestone these days is a lot more trim and in shape than before, as you can see from these pics taken in the summer: http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/earlystarters210708.html

and http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/beachboys120708.html

I won't be surprised to see him get his first England senior cap before too long.

He's good enough for a mid table team like spurs

I'm very impressed what old 'Arry has done with him..

Yesterday's game against Birmingham was the first game I've seen Spurs this season and spec. in the first half he was everywhere with, and without the ball. Very good passer all-around and is able to finish with that cannon that he's got..

He's I guess cemented his place in the first XI and is going to start again against us in the next game..

He's been very good in that deeper lying playmaker role. Almost like a quarterback, American football style.
It's the best way to use his vision and passing ability.

He's not the quickest or fittest bloke (neither am I for that matter, but he's paid to do it!), but is getting better on that score, and is maturing into a very good Premiership player.
Also takes a pretty good set piece as well.

He's like Matt Le Tissier but without the skill, natural ability & brilliance.

Slightly better looking though.

Huddlestone lacks mobility, which makes him nothing like Lampard, who moves well and can run all day. I have the same concern about Gibson, and hope I'm wrong.

His play acting which ultimately led to scholes sending off was embarassing....

It's a new media fashion, this is - probably to do with the fact that we don't have any midfielders of Xavi's ilk in the England set up, and we're just starting to realise that we could actually do with a few players that can trap and move a football. I should imagine this is also why Scholes is currently getting the shit licked out of his arse by every single journalist, pundit and coach in the nation, despite having done this for the entirity of his footballing career.

england were criticised for having an 'old midfield' and barry's hapless attempt to catch ozil is often put forward as an example of how england's 'old' players lacked pace.

well, if huddlestone is the new generation, they might as well stick by the older one....

I think he's improved over the last year, he's composed on the ball and has a decent passing game, it'll be interesting to see if he starts for England next week with Lampard out.

It's just he's not improved much since he left Derby. He always had a brilliant shot on him, could ping passes around the pitch at will and had that physical presence, he's still got a long way to go to become a 'star for England'.
This.

Not much has changed in my view. He still spreads the play excellently, he still has a physical presence that's beneficial to the team, and he's still got an excellent and beautifully clean strike, but he's not really added much to his game. His short passing game is still a bit lacking, and he struggles to get involved as much as a central midfielder should(whether that be to his lack of engine, I'm not sure, I've never really been in any way observant with the more complex physical side of the game, but it makes sense?) and he's just not really that influential. Nice to watch, and he suits Spurs with them playing Bale and Lennon and so him constantly having at least one option for his best attribute, but there's just something about him that I'm not really sure about.

He's talented but there's just something missing.

From the Beeb gossip column. Silly season has well and truly started.

Also we were linked to a Ciaran Clarke (Villa CB) as part of a Owen "deal". Now I know the story is probably baseless but I've never heard of the lad. Can anyone shed some light?

Manchester United are considering a move for Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone in the January transfer window. Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be a big fan of the £16m-rated midfielder.
