Whereas you will just completely change your opinion at the drop of a hat...Definitely Classy
Well the second post of him was a really good one and I can absolutely agree with it... Just strange that he seems to have changed his mind to it.

Yes, mockney. I do change my opinion. All the time, in fact.

For the record, I still think Rooney acted like a cnut. I've never said any different. I'm pleased he signed the contract though and I'm happy to leave the righteous moral crusading to people like you and Lailani.

I've always been more of a pragmatist and only really care about what's best for the club. Carry on the tub-thumping though. I know you enjoy it.

Er...sorry...near Southampton.
Has it occurred to you though (as has been mentioned countless times in this thread and lost in the masses of assumptions) that Rooney might not have cared how much money he was being offered? Has it occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, the reasons he gave for wanting to leave in the statement ( i,e the lack of ambition, an inability to bring the worlds best talent the the club) could have been genuine?

People are presuming his decision was based on money with nothing but an ever-growing rumour mill of made up stories as 'proof' that it was.

I would like to believe it is true and that he is not a money grabber (not that in anyway justifies his going public when he could have come up with a plausible excuse that would have spared the embarassment to the club and fans he is supposed to love) but it simply does not stand up to any rational scrutiny. Any player can ask for 'assurances' and they aren't worth the hot air they come out with. The club could promise a player they are are intending to sign every top player on the planet or are going to spend x millions of quid and then cite changes in markets/form/availability to do precisely none of these things. They would be promises of the decidedly pie crust variety and even our favourite bone headed scouser would know this.

I think that if Rooney wanted to know anything about the future of the club or seek assurances over anything he could have just called up a meeting with Fergie and discussed it.
Going around and and being a cnut, questioning the integrity of the club and smearing the name of Manchester Utd in the way he has done is just unforgivable.
His a money hungry cnut and that's just that!
He did question it in a meeting over his contract in private to Gill, thats the whole point his statement detailing his reason was only realised after Utd had a press conference on the matter. I also think both Utd and Rooney have confirmed he didn't even look at the contract in money terms so I don't know where your getting money hungry from (purely footballer terms that is, we know there paid way too much (they as in all footballers). If money was is most important motivation he would have waited for his contract to run down and signed for City on a Bosman.

We missed out on the the last Premier League title due to one single point as far as I can remember. Before that, we won the league three times in a row, reached two Champions League finals, won one Champions League. SAF has more than two decades of experience. Chelsea hasn't won as much as us in the last few years and recently they haven't spent much money on new players either. ManCity are adding new players but nobody knows how this experiment will work out. Don't even mention Real Madrid. When was the last time they reached the latter stages of the Champions League?

German football fans and journos often call United "the English Bayern Munich". Do you know why? It means that we have de facto booked success and that the times when we don't have success are the exception to the rule.

And how does he dare to criticize the squad, given the fact he himself has been rubbish for the last few months and was even booed by the England fans for horribly underperforming? This guy has had only one consistent, world-class season yet. In his first few years at the club when he was still not consistent and a hit and miss, did Scholes and Giggs go to the gaffer and demand guarantees and promises for the future? I don't think so.

So either he's bonkers and overestimating his influence on the club and forgetting his beginnings at United or he's just greedy. Both things are nothing which would garant praise.

On top of that he hasn't shown any remorse whatsoever.

Why is it difficult to accept that people despise his actions? When Terry or Cole did similar things, everyone on here was quick to judge and condemn them. But as long as it's our boy Wayne it's fine?

Very, very good post.

(Apart from the Bayern part, when I hear people comparing those 2 clubs I could go nuts ;))

I just like to at least look at things on the other side of the coin..

"Wayne Rooney's remarkable decision to change his mind and stay at Manchester United hung on a phone call with co-owner Joel Glazer.

The discussion, which took place on Thursday afternoon, was reminiscent of a conversation John Terry had with Roman Abramovich when the Chelsea captain was talked out of leaving for Manchester City last year and it saw Rooney finally receive the assurances he required over future investment in the club's squad.

The phone call between star player and owner could be the most important element of a traumatic week for Sir Alex Ferguson, if it does indeed usher in a renewed period of spending by the club despite its £720m debts."

...Changing your opinion once your argument has been outdone or you've encountered new facts is fair enough....but changing your opinion in a day, despite nothing changing fact-wise about the things you were so upset about, simply because the player went from wanting away, to signing is not the same thing..

I find the comparison between the two laughably pious... It's gonna take me - and probably most - longer than a day to change my principles on the matter...

let alone THEN become patronising about it to others, despite being more outraged than most on the matter initially. That shows a startling lack of self awareness and perspective...Something that would usually go hand in hand with a person willing to admit their wrongs.

..But hey.

Mockney you removed the reference to me, you've cut me deep :(
Sorry B-Dawg, I'll put it back...You going Glazer march/Spurs?

What I think about it?
Yes, I think it's good enough. A club could always need investments, that goes for every club, in every position.
We have many youngsters that look very exciting.
And about the debts I'm not going to answer as I'm just not informed enough to make an objective point.

If I had worries about a club's ambition that has won the league 3 times in the last 4 years and were only short of 1 point to win it the 4th time?
No, simple as.
So you have actually questioned United's ambitions? Well that tells me a lot.
Giggs and Scholes retire at the end of the season, we what we did with Ronaldo and don't replace them, what impact does that have on us? The squad is clearly lacking in areas now, especially when you take Scholes out we will be in trouble.
 What that has got to do with anything...

And generally, I'm of the opinion, that a player really shouldnt make signing a new contract dependent on future investments of the club, especially not a man that has claimed, he wanted a life-long contract just few months before.
That is so pathetic... No player, really no player is bigger than the club and when he is unhappy here, then leave for feck's sake.
But to try and put the club under pressure with such statements is just so out of character for Rooney and really dissapointing.
Any top player will look at how successful a team is going to be before committing to them, this with wages, players in the team, location and affinity with the club will all be taken into account. Rooney won't have been the only player to ever ask about player investment and how the future of the club will go before signing a new long contract.

Whether the whole story was just to get bigger wages or really to try and force the club to future investments, this thing is generally just so wrong imo.

When you think differently about it fine, but don't come and make so stupid comments like "Ronaldo fans", that makes you look dumb, believe me.
For me the whole Ronaldo saga was, although there were many parts that angered me, not as lowbrow as this, and that has nothing to do with me beeing a "Ronaldo fanboi". I probably was when he was here, but since he left I haven't seen a single Real Madrid game and couldnt give two shits about him anymore.
I see alot of fans who are giving stick to one of our current players who we should be supporting, saying Ronaldo this, Ronaldo that, he's not our player anymore move on.

He cares about whether the club is going to be successfull because it impacts on him, he left Everton because of this reason we all know this so god knows why people are vilifying him for it and calling him greedy when basically 99% of football players are the same. Its also hypocritical because alot of Utd fans are also questioning our squad and a net transfer investment since the Glazers took charge, especially in the face of selling Ronaldo and to a lesser extend not signing Tevez.
How hard is it to understand that doing it in public is the problem?

About the bold bit read post #7489 for my opinion on that....just an opinion.

Anyway, who the feck is Gill when you can speak to SAF. Who runs this football team anyway. Really, who holds the power in terms of getting backing from the fans/press/other respected managers. Not Gill, it's Fergie.

Rooney played a big part in those title winning season and European cup runs, he has consistantly been one of our best players since he signed so why would Giggs and Scholes have any cause to complain, your trying to completely re-write history since Wanye Rooney came to this football club he has consistantly been one of our best players thats a fact. The whole national team was booed in the summer not just Rooney who by the way was top scorer in qualifying to get them there. Your post is so wrong its untrue.

Well I see your points, but I still can't agree with them.

I personally think we could do with a CM, but I absolutely trust Fergie and he knows best when there's the need to make further investments.
But a player, that as arguably been one of our worst players this season, shouldnt question a managers', and team's ambition that was so successfull as ours.

And I don't think that success of the club is the most important factor for a player before he signs a new contract. It's not all about winning trophies, not for the fans and not for the players.
It's an important factor, that's for sure, but many of us (including me) thought of a player like Wayne Rooney, who has claimed that he wanted to stay with this club forever, that he might support a temporary troubling team by giving his best on the pitch rather than thinking about leaving it just for success' sake.

Ronaldo this Ronaldo that?
The debate, and I don't know who started it, was whether the Ronaldo saga was as bad as this one, and I am of the opinion that it wasnt for my previously stated reasons.

Keane did exactly the same thing in 99 (think it was 99) saying where never going to attract/keep players without breaking the wage structure.

Be a bit boring if everybody agreed.

I personally think we could do with a CM, but I absolutely trust Fergie and he knows best when there's the need to make further investments.
He does know best but if his hands are tied its an issue.

But a player, that as arguably been one of our worst players this season, shouldnt question a managers', and team's ambition that was so successfull as ours.
Its been very stop start for Rooney and he's been hobbling around quite a bit even when he's played, its very harsh to judge form in such circustances all players need a run of games.

And I don't think that success of the club is the most important factor for a player before he signs a new contract. It's not all about winning trophies, not for the fans and not for the players.
Here you have to separate players and fans out, sure their are exceptions like Giggs, Scholes and Neville but most of our players are here because they believe it gives them a good chance of winning things.

It's an important factor, that's for sure, but many of us (including me) thought of a player like Wayne Rooney, who has claimed that he wanted to stay with this club forever, that he might support a temporary troubling team by giving his best on the pitch rather than thinking about leaving it just for success' sake.
How temporary would it be, if the club has no money and the debt is effecting investment Rooney in his peak years could miss out on success that he joined the club for in the first place. Why not just stay at Everton if thats his thinking? Most players wont do that like I say their are exceptions I would like to bring up Robson here bit further back but a good example like Scholes, Giggs and Neville.

Did Rooney ever actually use the word "ambition"?

From what I can gather, he sought assurances that there were funds available for future squad investment.

You might say that that is questioning the club's ambition by implication, but is it really?

Fergie and the rest of the club might have all the ambition in the world but if your transfer budget is insufficient then it is highly unlikely that ambition alone will get you far.

If the club had been spending big money on players every summer then I'm pretty sure Rooney wouldn't have even had doubts but we all know that the purse strings have been tightened for whatever reason in the last couple of summer windows.

If anyone can't understand why Rooney simply had to ask the question before committing to a five year contract, I think they're being very unreasonable and unrealistic, to be honest.

Oh, so he just HAD TO throw his teammates under the bus? No choice, eh? Bullshit. You don't ever do what he did. Ever.

Keane did exactly the same thing in 99 (think it was 99) saying where never going to attract/keep players without breaking the wage structure.
So, you're saying Keane said his teammates were not good enough for him? Simply not true. Keane made a completely different statement.

Depends. No-one likes tapping up by agents or clubs. It's illegal isn't it. Maybe that was the deal to prevent disclosure of information. Who's to say.
Utd who tap players up are going to complain about another club doing it, this is getting beyhond a joke now, how could it be proved anyway. I think through all the speculation we can say with assurance this hasn't happened Rooney hasn't signed a contract to avoid a tapping up storm.

Keane said we where missing out on top players because of our wage structure!!! Rooney never said such a player is crap he said we should be competing for the top players, the other players probably think the same thing.

Can always trust you to wade in and defend the precious Lailani, can't we? Just like we can usually rely on you to misunderstand the meaning of hypocrisy.

From what I've seen she's well capable of looking after herself but seeing as you stuck your oar in where am I "bashing" anyone? I don't think I've had a go at anyone for doing what I did and slagging Rooney off. I've simply corrected the repeated factual inaccuracy about this (alleged) 250k salary.

We can't say anything with assurance. You, like the rest of us, have no idea why Rooney signed the contract. We only know what we have been told, not whether it's the truth or not.

Well you are a really good poster and make your points very well. (apart from that Ronaldo part ;))

As I claimed, I think the reason why many of us feel so angry about this whole story is, that we saw Rooney as one of those rare examples of loyal football players and didnt expect him to come out and make those statements.

You might be right, many players out there choose the club they expect to be the most likely to be successfull, but many didnt think Rooney was one of those.

And honestly...I think, we can be that (successful) with the squad we currently have.
This is a very good team, with many very good prospects and probably one or two players that need to be replaced in the near future.

And I'm still dissapointed that Rooney questioned that and made success dependent of his contract.

I just hope he starts performing again and helps the team and the club and that everything will be resolved soon.
Completely forgiving him for what he has done will take time for me though :)

I've had 6 different people tell me that he doubled his wages today. What I don't understand is that we all have a good laugh at the mail for their shite transfer stories and well just being shite in general but because people now have a bit of hate towards Rooney they are using the same paper as gospel to justify their hatred. T'is a little strange.

I have no loyalty to MUST though, its weird you lot keep preaching it! If they went in a direction I didn't agree with, I'd make that known and certainly cease to be a member

As you say, its their goals I admire, and as the group doing the most to achieve that, I'm happy with what they're doing

I guess because they've had so much publicity in recent times, they're there to be knocked and shot at. Sadly despite their aims quite a lot of United supporters on here are very quick, very vicious and sometimes quite personal in doing so
