Figured such. Was holding out hope some of it was based off historical events, even if loosely. I figured the white walkers had be some sort of mythical tale.

It definitely has some historic elements, medieval (queue Smashed) being the most relevant. I think if we're trying to compare it to a show, I'd say it's almost a fantasy version of Rome (best.. show ... eeeever)

One of the things I love is that it's more so in the background, they don't throw it out there and go "whoa look at me staff throwin' fire at folks, boom", it's more so people going "nah that ain't possible, just a myth"
It's not based on the War of Roses in any way. It might be inspired by it, though. At the end of the day it's a fictional continent, in a fictional world, with fiction creatures, fictional magic and a fictional weather system.

just watched the first episode. fecking confusing. mind you, never did much care for middle earth medieval settings. Oblivion, dragon age, WoW, all did not appeal to me at all.
I guess between this setting and space/future settings, I like the latter.

I'm seriously hoping that they move to a 12(or more) episode format for the next few seasons. Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords are so huge that doing it in 10 episodes would be criminal. I guess they'll have the mix them around a bit to keep up with the pacing.
Went to the biggest Borders store in the southern hemisphere - and I think the one that has the most turnover across the world - yet they didn't have the fecking series. So I ordered it online... Might take up to 3 weeks to arrive.

Right, I've just scanned the net... apparently the Dothraki language is very loosely based on Arabic and Spanish(well, it's suppose to sound like that to non Arabic speakers). But they're clearly more like Hun/other Turkic tribes or Mongols than Arabs/or perhaps Moors if the Dothraki's loosely based on a culture/tribe/civilisation that conquered parts of Europe pre or medievel Europe. They're also a bit Klingon but I suspect they were also based on Mongols.
Then again, I've only seen one episode so I could be wrong.

Yes, you could do the same with LOTR/Star Wars/Star Trek. But there's nothing wrong with basing characters/time periods/people loosely on real world ones.
I'm not saying there is, everything is loosely based on some aspect of reality in some way. The human mind doesn't have the scope to make up a whole new world that bares no similarities with our own.

I love the lil' smirk that Tyrion has when he walks away from bitch-slapping Joffrey thrice. Dinklage has nailed his character. Spot on.
And his interaction with everyone in the family was perfect as well - he refuses to look Cersei in the face, his genuine enjoyment on interacting with Tommen and Myrcella and the loaded conversation with Jaime. Dinklage for an Emmy !
That Prince fecking pisses me off, though do wish he sticks around a bit because I do like to hate someone in a show. The mother I thought was a bit harsh to the bastard son but guess its not all surprising, he seems quite nice and just seems to get out of their way and knows his role.
I'm struggling to find someone who I actually like enough, though am liking Daenerys and the girl who was teaching her to be good in bed. The dwarf is OK, a bit annoying but decent enough.

He's a brilliant actor. You should check him out in the Station Master. Great wee film. Couldn't be more different to the character he's playing in this.
