People don't realize how awful Atlético are this season. We should win both legs.

Weirdly confident about this one, feel like Pogba will have a big game and Rashford to win it off the bench.

Surely no one has any doubt that we will let atletico have their best game of the season and revive their year after some poor form. All their players out of form will shine tonight.

    Tonight’s headlines

    Ronaldo is finished
    Simeone masterclass
    Suarez strikes old enemy
Pogba punished for dwelling too much
Sancho a shadow of his Dortmund days
    What has happened to Rashford?
Despite a inconsistent season, Felix shines
    How do we sell Maguire?

I'm better than Messi (even though I'm not)
A lot of talk about how crap they are. Wasn’t long ago we bottled a 2-0 lead against Villa, couldn’t get over the line against Middlesbrough and got rattled against Burnley and Southampton. We’re crap as well when the pressure is on, so really anything could happen.

This match is interesting to me for one big reason. Since RR came in, we've played mostly crap teams, or to be me more polite, we have not yet played a big team, and have been, by and large, underwhelming. This is the first time we're up against a top team. I am very curious to see how he sets us up and sends us out, how well he's able to motivate the players for this etc.

Who is the ref? A Pogba or McTominay red is nailed on with their cheating cnuts on the pitch.
I just looked it up and he actually refereed Atletico v Porto earlier this season and handed up 9 yellow and 1 red. 3 of the yellows for the home team, and 6 + red for Porto. Also Red Star Belgrade vs Sheriff - 9 yellows including one second resulting in a red.

Atletico Madrid vs. Porto - 15 September 2021 - Soccerway
Red Star Belgrade vs. Sheriff - 3 August 2021 - Soccerway

    He has reffed us twice before;

2-1 away victory against Juventus, 5 yellow total & 3 for us - Juventus vs. Manchester United - 7 November 2018 - Soccerway
1-1 home against Celta Vigo, 5 yellow total, 2 for us. 2 reds total, one either side. Manchester United vs. Celta Vigo - 11 May 2017 - Soccerway

From memory I think it was Baily striking a player on or something. The Mourinho Europa League win.

He seems to be quite card happy, so it will be an interesting but frustrating game.

Haven't they played themselves back into form recently?
Yes. A 0-3, but after a 4-2 beating against Barca and 0-1 against Levante.

If Real Sociedad and Villareal were more consistent, Atlético would be out of the Top4-6 spots.

Will echo what's been said here about McTominay needing to be careful. A repeat of his Leeds performance would see him red carded by the hour mark against these lot.

Aside from that, I'm a little nervy about the amount of chances we gift to the opposition, even in our good performances. If we go with Pogba and Bruno in midfield then they'll have to be disciplined in their game and ensure our CBs don't get exposed 1-on-1, particularly Maguire.

I predict another nothing performance in the UCL by Suárez; + at least one goal by CR.
I see people haven't been following Suarez in the UCL for the past few years.

PS: I get the Liverpool/jinx angle you guys are going for.

Exactly. People forget how much Suarez vanishes in CL matches. Rudiger pocketed him so badly when they played Chelsea, its not even funny.
He’s playing against us. Just watch him have a CL blinder of a game, guaranteed !

Sorry, but the recent collapses against Leeds and Villa have me nervous for this. Can definitely see us conceding 2 in quick succession. Also fancy us to score so 2-1 Atletico.

Like others I can see a red incoming too.

Are we playing in our third kit today? Might we even see a return of the dreaded yellow shorts? All three of our kits clash with Atletico's to some extent.

McT won't start. Think it will be Matic, Fred and Pogba. Something tells me, he will bench Bruno.

    Ronaldo, Rashford
    Pogba , Matic,Fred
    Telles,Varane, Maguire,Lindelof, Dalot.

Pretty much everyone is fresh. Take a cautious approach and get an odd goal.

Yeah, pretty much guaranteed to be wearing the third kit. Yellow shorts are quite likely as the black ones are closer to their blue.

Think we’ll draw this game and finish them off back at Old Trafford

    Starting XI

    De Gea

    Dalot - Varane - Maguire - Shaw

    B.Fernandes - Fred - Pogba

    Sancho - Ronaldo - Elanga

subs: Henderson, Heaton, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Telles, Matic, McTominay, Mata, Mejbri, Lingard, Rashford

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Manchester United

It just doesn’t work that way. First, our form hasn’t been that great this season. But more importantly, form goes out the window in a tie like this.

It just occurred to me that I should go onto an Atleti forum and see what they’re saying. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them licking their lips going into this one, notwithstanding their injuries and other issues.

I really hope we don't set up for this. We are much more likely to lose at OT than we are away from home IMO. I'm not sure if that is backed statistically but I'm sure we've dropped more points at home than we have away this season.

Funnily enough, our home and away records are nearly identical in the Premier League: 13 games, 23 points, +5 goal difference.

In the Champions League, we got 7 points at home, 5 away.

I think recent results have masked over our defensive frailties. De Gea has saved us more times than he should have. Despite their form, Atletico have guys who know how to finish. I can see them getting 2-3 against us tonight. It could be a high scoring game but I certainly don't see a clean sheet for us. Can see us conceding 2 at least.

This is the stage for Ronaldo… need a big game from him. Every time Ronaldo has faced ath Madrid in the champ league knockouts he’s always come out on top. Hoping for the same again! Pogba been playing well recently and think he could make a huge difference, there going to be sitting deep and we may struggle to break them down so will need, pogba, Bruno and sancho creativity.

Neither do I and I’m not saying that we will set up with that mindset nor do I want us too. I’m just predicting that we will draw (of course I’d much prefer a win) tonight’s game and beat them in the 2nd leg. Just as long we get something from tonight’s game, I’d take it. Plus I think Atletico are a much stronger team at home than they are away so a draw tonight is a very good result for us.

Crikey. I really can't keep up with the rule changes, much of which seems to be pointless meddling. Can you understand the offside rule any more? Buggered if I can.
Not raising the flag until the players has run a hundred yards?

    love it.

    EDIT:

But the best rule is allowing handballs by the attacking player and then score.

What that rule was meant for is to protect an accidental handball by the defender not reward the attacker.

But we have numpties enforcing these rules.

It literally makes perfect sense and is designed so that goals don’t get flagged off in the event the linesman has gotten it wrong. What’s not to understand?

Can see their game plan revolving around screaming after every 50/50 and trying to wind Fred up.

I think we will struggle to settle down in the first half and even if we manage to keep the ball for longer times, I don't think we will penetrate their defense that easily. United's defense is quite shaky, it has been leaking goals for a while now and there are some wonderful players at Atleti who can take advantage of the way we defend. Bruno almost always leaves a big hole in midfield, which Correa can take advantage of and set Suarez up. We need players to keep their shape and score at the Metropolitano. We definitely should bring it to OT and finish them here.
