I know the majority of these players are a massive drop off from our first XI starters. But it's quite embarrassing the shift they aren't putting in.
Yeah you have a point. The likes of Dalot, Fred, McT, James and Ighalo should be buzzing around to improve their cardio and make an impression instead of jogging around like it’s a testimonial

I love that for the goal Scott had to fight Bailly off more than any of their defenders. Bally is just like some wild Tarzan dude that we just throw in to go mental, feck knows what he doing half the time but I love it.

    Red Card for Casemiro!
We have to be worried about how tumescent we look in possession, especially when passing out from the back. How come Henderson doesn't know whom to pass to, how come Fred/McT don't drop a bit deeper to offer options. Why is it a long ball from our GK to our full backs who end up losing it immediately?

We simply need to do better in possession.

It is almost annoying watching Bailly play well...thinking where he could’ve been by now without injuries.

Hold on, are people suggesting we’ve been good?! There’s a obviously the fair excuse that we’ve been abysmal because it’s a mish-mash 11, but it doesn’t change that we’ve been abysmal.

And seriously, I like Ighalo, but can we please get Cavani or Jovic already. That guy is a nice guy, but he is so poor that he isn’t even depth.

Dull enough half of football between two sides are are basically playing their 2nd choice teams.

The ball in by Mata made that goal. McTominay got in before Bailly. The latter has defended well so far. Ighalo should have scored his chance but looks a little off the pace.

Henderson had 1 routine save to make but on a wet night you never know with shots like that

You do realise scoring doesn’t erase all the poor play right ?

Fair play to him for the goal but there’s nothing wrong with being frustrated with his midfield play.
You do realise that this team of first 11 hardly play together so lack cohesion?

You do realise these players have hardly gotten in to a rhythm because they have barely started the season and alot of these players have hardly gotten in to a pattern in playing game after game.

For some its excuses but to some it's just waiting for the right time to occur as it did last season.

Mctomminay isnt a CDM - he is a box to box midfielder playing in a double pivot & that requires the right balance of players for it to work. Same with players like Fred & Van de Beek. This is hardly our well cohesive team and it shows.

Lots of morning about Fred but he’s been good defensively and made loads of interceptions already. His passing has been sloppy but McTominay has been equally sloppy and yet offered us NOTHING defensively either
I think they've both been good in their roles

God,I hope Baily remains fit. So much untapped potential.
    We all do

I would like to see Martial on for Odion and Rashford for James, and latter if Mata gets tired, Greenwood

To be fair, he's gone from total football to United. He has to learn how to play our way.
VDB needs to be told to stretch the play. Receives the ball and always comes back short. This is a new league..stretch the play as much as you're able to.

Slow games like this are where Mata can still shine, he's been the class of the squad so far but there's a sympatico missing between him, Ighalo, and Van de Beek right now. I'd like to see them last a good while into the second half; something special can happen amongst them, I think.

Mata's service on that goal was pristine, so was McTominay's delivery.

Fred has been frustrating - no patience when needed, no urgency when called for. Most frustrating thing is the lack of forward movement from the back. Too much standing over the ball waiting for nothing to happen. I want to holler at them like I do my U15's, "MOVE THE BALL FORWARD!!!"

But we're up a goal, keeping a clean sheet, and no one on the field should be starting the weekend.

I’d like to kindly rekindle my conversation with @Schmeichel's Cartwheel about McTominay :)

In all seriousness though, we have been atrocious.
To be fair, the header was decent, the most impressive thing being holding off Eric Bailly

I don’t rate Scott, obviously, but it’s not an “agenda” (hate that word) if he proves me wrong and becomes a top player I’ll be happy to be proven wrong, but I can’t see it. At the end of the day we all just want the best for United don’t we.

Great ball by Mata too. Another player I’ve written off.

Imagine if McT had missed
TBF McTominay timing for the run was off. It's Ben White mistake that played McTominay onside, or it would be Bailly job to try to reach that cross to avoid the offside call

Ben White being stupid there, backing too soon and played many of our players onside.
That’s two mistakes in two games now. Embarasses himself three times against Marcus on Saturday and follows it up by impatiently running back and not holding the line today. He’s got talent, as he showed at Leeds, but he is overhyped.

I think we’ve been fine given the circumstances. In control of the game, albeit the game is very poor.

Not sure there have been too many comments to suggest so..

Pretty uneventful game so far, but considering the changes for both sides I never felt it was likely that we'd see the craziness of the weekend again. There's still time though!

We've not been too impressive by any stretch of the imagine, but not poor. Mata did well to win the free kick a d deliver a perfect ball to McTominay. He really put away that header too, albeit practically unmarked.

Tonight has been a reminder of all the matches last autumn in which we struggled to break down middling teams. No shock a lot of the players who failed us in that run are out there tonight.

If you want to be positive I guess you can say a lot of the players look fitter than against Luton.

Slightly depressing how little we get from the flanks. There was one surging run from Williams that made me remember how he got his break. Made me wonder why he doesn't try that all the time? Looks like he's lost all his energy and adventure. You hate to see it.

Wow, Fred is out of confidence! Just keeps it safe and when he does move forward it`s straight to a Brighton player. Scotty is better but also stuck in second gear, to use nice words. Hope they can find their mojo second half

Juan Mata has been directly involved in 12 goals in his last 15 starts for Manchester United across all competitions (four goals and eight assists)

This is another example of individual moments of quality usurping 45 minutes of good work from Brighton. When the United 2nd string has a bit more quality than the Brighton 2nd string this is always possible, but there's a pattern that we should be recognising, and that's the fact that in games featuring the respective 1st teams and 2nd teams, Brighton have shown a greater purpose and understanding of how they want to play whereas in both we have looked disjointed once more. We can't keep relying on moments of individual quality to determine games. We'll come unglued against top 10 sides.

Best way to summarise the players individually is: Bailly and Mata have stood out, whilst the others have really been passengers throughout?

Without a doubt, and tbh I’ve written Mata off too  He has his uses too though. Clearly better than Lingard and Pereira, who no longer have a use at our club, hence why Ole seems to want to boot both.

I'd like to see Greenwood get a run out in 2nd half as the central striker at some point. I think his movement could stretch that backline and give more options for Mata and VDB

VDB seems to be playing exactly where Bruno left off so it's clearly a tactic to play so high off the ball.

I can understand Ole wanting to press the defence into a mistake to nab an easy goal. 99% of the time though it gets through and leaves our creative player too high to influence things when we do win it back.

With McTominay it's gotb nothing to do with it. He simply is not moving into those spaces. The same with Fred. DVB is trying to get Fred to pass into those spaces but he is not. You don't need to play every day in a competitive match to see and move and pass into space. Otherwise no international team is going to be able to do it.
    It's simply down to coaching.
