West Ham and Leicester also rested players. This is Bristol City's biggest game of the season.
They're third in the Championship, with a very good chance to get into the Premier League, so, really?

I agree that the league is more important to them, particularly with Villa and Wolves over Xmas - however, all their players will want to play this I'm sure, so I think they'll put out an almost first team.

Arsenal and City got away with almost complete second teams against Premier League adversaries, so…
City ended up having to go to penalties so though they 'got away' with it, they still had to play another 30 mins.

Anyway, the League Cup is Mourinho's "thing". He's won it four times as manager and would probably like to win it again. I'm sure we'll see a strong side - stronger than the teams Arsenal and City fielded - even though there'll be some rotation.

They’re in good form and already knocked 2-3 Prem teams out so I expect this to be a really tough game.

Anyway, I find it kind of depressing if we have to force players into injury, like Valencia in the last game, to get past Bristol in a League Cup round. Smalling, Matić, Lukaku and even Lingard have such a run of games it's beginning to get dangerous to start them. “December injuries,” my ass!

Since unfortunately Mkhitaryan is unlikely to start, I would like to see a 3-4-3 (which would end up being a 3-4-1-2) looking like this upfront:

    Rashford Martial
    Ibrahimović

*Whichever doesn't start will start against Leicester so I'd prefer Rashford to start but, his form has been decent so Mourinho may reward him with starting the prem game.

I think a few on here will be disappointed with Mourinho for how strong the team will be. He doesn’t take any quarter final lightly.

Gotta be honest, I feel envy when I saw Diaz and Foden started last night for City, plus Dele-Bashiru and Nmecha came on. A win is the most important thing and Bristol could be a tricky opponent, but hopefully McTominay and Tuanzebe will play today and maybe Kehinde from the bench.

quite a few not putting Pogba in , I think he is a cert to start and to be captain also.
    Indeed.
Pogba has played very few games and he is in desperate need to play games to get back match fitness.
I expect him to start in every game from now on, till at least end of January.
If need be, he'll play 3 games per week (which is quite possible in the upcoming weeks).

Agree, although with the exception of Axel, I think they are a different calibre of talent I think. We should perhaps be looking at involving the likes of Gomes and Chong, but above them, I’m not convinced we have any/many first team hopefuls.

    Got the plane:

    Romero, Joel Pereira, O'Hara
    Darmian, Shaw, Blind
    Lindelof, Smalling, Rojo, Tuanzebe
    Pogba, Herrera, McTominay
    Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Mata
    Rashford, Martial
    Zlatan, Lukaku

    That's it. 18 from that 20.

I expect a full strength team tonight. It could be our best chance at a trophy this year and possibly the opportunity to put right the City game.

Quite the opposite for me , I think he will start tonight.
Don't get me wrong, I would love him to start, but I don't see any logic in keeping him out of the squad entirely for disciplinary reasons and then out of the sudden giving him a start.

At least Matic is getting a rest. Going to need him fresh as possible in the coming weeks!

What did I miss here? Wasn't he kept out because of his form? And if he plays today then it makes perfect sense as cup games are used to give back up players chance in the 11.

You believe what you want, but there are rumors of a bust up during a manager talk, he might have responded back. Anyhow, I can't believe he would be kept out of the team like this, that's burning a player, including changing the numbers needed on the bench (Mourinho always takes 3 options for attack), just because of form.

is the fan village worth a visit for a couple of drinks?
It's a sort of outside area with (crappy) live music, burger vans, drinks etc. At least when I have been on Saturdays. I seem to remember the food prices being, unsurprisingly, a fecking rip off. Not entirely sure about the drinks, but occasionally after the matches you can get 'pints for a pound' which obviously goes down well

The fan village will of course be mostly Bristol City fans but yeah, I'd check it out for sure. It's around the entrance near the car park and the bronze statue.

I don't mind what the time is although I'd love to see more of McTominay and Tuanzebe.

I went to Bristol City in the FA Cup around 1990 just after CFC got back to the old First Division.
It is still their highest gate though you might top that tonight.
There was loads of trouble on both sides and we got thumped 3-1.

I think it will be a great atmosphere and if you are complacent this might be the end of the road in this cup.

might be of use, from the MEN

Eight senior United players missing vs Bristol
Mourinho has rested David de Gea, Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones for the trip. Antonio Valencia was unlikely to play before he suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s win at West Brom and was not with the squad at Manchester Airport on Wednesday morning.
The other injury absentees are Eric Bailly, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.

Well O'Hara is a certainty to not be in the squad barring injury so it's 18 from 19.

Depends what formation we play but a back 3 seems unlikely with only 4 cbs travelling.

Reckon Lingard may sit this one out.

I think we will see Axel Tuanzebe play from start, but at right back. Mourinho doesn't risk him in the central defence.. But anyway, hopefully Axel and Scott will play tonight, both deserve a start..

I hope Shaw plays and does well.

I know it's not elite opposition, and a good performance would prove very little, but I still think he might be the solution to our ongoing LB question.

I've gone with a mix of reserves and starters for this. Jose will relish holding the title considering it could be the only trophy we end up with this season.

    Romero
    Tuanzebe Lindelof Jones Shaw
    McTominay Pogba
    Mkhitaryan
    Lingard Zlatan Rashford

    Herrera, Lukaku, Martial as subs.

Torn on whether he'll use Rojo over Jones though.
