Can't see us win given that our gap between our starting 11 and the rest is so big for us (and I can't see us play our main players). Their depth is also a lot better than ours, plus being at the Bridge where we always suck so I'm not too optimistic. Ole might be tempted to play the main guys but with how many injury problems we've had, just probably isn't the best idea.

    Romero
    Maguire Jones Rojo
    Dalot McTominay Garner Williams
    Mata
    Lingard Greenwood

The League game is much more important so i expect us to use a number of youngsters. Could be a very difficult game this. Hope people don't lose their sh3te if we have a poor game with our B team.

Keep Martial, James, Marcus and Scott as far away from this fixture as possible. We can't afford an injury to any of these four boys

    Red Card for Casemiro!
That's not an SAF side, that's just a type of football.

"building through the middle"... what, we ignored Parker, Irwin, Evra, Neville, etc? Nah, we put it through the FB and up the wing (or overlapping) loads of times.

What about having a solid CH pairing, what about mental attitude, what about blend of physicality and flair, what about SAF winnings games in all sorts of different ways...pacy wingers, dribbling wingers, crossing wingers/wide men?

I see you've posted this in a few threads. Yes, Lampard is doing well (so far) and you obviously like him but the similarity with a SAF team? ... they both play with a round ball.
And how many other teams are playing that 'type of football' right now? At that fast tempo, with quick passing, all forwards making runs, a man at the edge of the box, scoring from near post, far post, outside the box? With successful focus on attack-first (23 goals, same as Liverpool) with a team of young players (CHO, Abraham, Mount, Tomori, Pulisic)? And they do have physicality - Kante, Abraham, CHO, Azpi, Zouma - none of them are pushovers.

Numbers wise, Leicester come closest, but they are dependent on individual players, not the squad. They also don't depend on wide men taking defenders on - they're more of a 'run off the shoulder of the last man onto a through ball' side. Leicester lose Vardy or Maddison, their style of play changes. Look at the rotation Chelsea have gone through given their CL commitments, and the way they play still remains the same.

They are flaky defensively, I'll give you that. SAF had his defence sorted more often than not. But it's still early days for Lampard, and he hasn't even had a transfer window to change the team the way he wants. They haven't had enough games to show the 'mental attitude' as well. But I didn't say Lampard has a SAF-esque team right now, I said I see strong similarities.

Also, I didn't say that our only pattern of play was building through the middle, either. I said the way Chelsea do it remind me of SAF's teams. Chelsea play through the flanks as well with Alonso and Azpi, as do Wolves with Doherty, or Leicester with Chilwell, or of course Liverpool with Robertson and TAA. Of course there's generic similarities between all teams. But I see far more similarities with Lampard's Chelsea and SAF's United in terms of focus on attack and youth, with good squad management and man motivation and patterns of play.

Hoping for a win but seems unlikely. Chelsea seems very solid at the moment. Real hunger in that team.

433; Wan-Bissaka, Jones, Tuanzebe, Williams; McTominay, Matić, Fred; Greenwood, Martial, Chong.

McTom have played a lot recently so not really ideal. Wan-Bissaka too. Rushing Martial into lots of game isn't really all too ideal either. But it's that best lineup I can think of if we want to give a few players some rest.

I am however feeling fairly sure we'll see a 4231 with Mata, Lingard and Young starting and that'll see us getting hammered.

We’re not winning the Europa league. My guess is we’ll be knocked out by a CL flunky.
Didn't say we'd win it but looks like we will at least get through to knockouts and from there you never know. If we add a few attacking players in January we are are as good as anyone in the competition. The standard really isn't that good. Depends on the CL drop outs obviously.

No chance. With the lack of depth and quality we have, added to a few injuries , we can't afford to risk so many of our best players.

I agree we probably wont. I think we should though.

Build some momentum and also try to build the players fitness to stop all the injuries. I hope we only rest one of James, Mctom, Rash or Mctom.

I think Rash and Martial need as much game time together as possible to develop an understanding, the pace of James could be vital (As it was last time we played Chelsea) and Mctom is our only fit and competent midfielder.

We're away to Bournemouth after this, can't afford to play the first team.

    Romero
    Jones Lindelof Rojo Williams
    Matic Garner
    Mata Lingard Gomes
    Greenwood

This made a little bit of sick come up in to my mouth

I'm saying it already, if we lose this I won't have an issue. Cup games are a distraction this season

I want to see our best team for this one. Maybe rotate our defenders, but give James, Rashford and Martial another game. We need to build momentum and fight for a title.

We can't rotate to much the squad as we are playing of the best team in the league, it would be too dangerous to start the same team as Belgrade.

And as usual, we draw Chelsea every f***** seasons in cups, I hate this tie.

Until we see the squad this is so difficult to pick. Is Ole going to rest or go after Chelsea with roughly are best team? If we do go with are best I think we'll murder them. Honestly think we are on to something.

Chelsea are in top form right now and will be baying for blood after the humiliation on opening day. I can't see anything other than a chelsea win. 3-1.

We've ha to play with essentially a B squad for several games this seasons and people still lose their sh*t.

Personally, I don't want to prioritize this cup at all and risk both fatigue and worse, more injuries in whats going to be a very heated game. I'd be happy with an honorable loss so we can prioritize the Europa League and EPL. Can you imagine if Martial got injured v Chelsea? Our season would be over, again.

Full side. We have chopped and changed enough this season, a lot of players are undercooked and we need a rythmn to develop in our play.
Lose and we get shit on again, youth side or not so we have to keep lifting this cloud or the press will be quick to pile back on

Assuming we've the same players we had for Norwich, I'd go with:
    Romero
    Wan-Bissaka
    Lindelof
    Maguire
    Williams
    Garner
    McTominay
    James
    Pereira
    Rashford
    Martial.

Full strength XI, but maybe a case for the back three and wing backs if we expect Chelsea to play with wingers. In that case, it would be the Liverpool XI with Martial in.

I agree. I expect a team of very inexperienced players plus the fringe (not good enough) players to make the majority of the first 11 and a mediocre game as a result. The League has to be the priority but it will not stop all the toxicity to come back in force if we lose to Chelsea with a crap team out there.

Hope it doesn't go to penalties. :nervous:

I don't want to see a disjointed side full of players that haven't played a single game together. Momentum is important and, at some point, good performances must become the rule and not the exception. In the absence of Pogba, McT & Fred need to get more time to settle in the midfield as a partnership. The quartet upfront that consists of Rashy, Tony, Andreas and James needs more minutes together to develop a better understanding.

We need games like this to test ourselves. Winning the league cup may not be of paramount importance but constantly pushing ourselves to do better is. Find your best team, discover its ceiling and then start resting players and choosing competitions.

I hope we don't go all out for this one. The risk to reward is just too much. Our front three need to be wrapped in cotton wool for the league and Europe and midfield is truly devoid of any useful options.

The likes of martial, rashford, James, mctominay need to be rested for this one.

Although I don't want to be looking forward to it, but the likes of JLingz, mata and matic need to be played in order to give others a rest and prioritize the league.

Not to mention that game time for greenwood, Williams, garner and axel would be great.

Don't care much about result. Just play a good mix of youngsters and experienced ones and rest key players for Saturday. Front 3 can be on bench at max but none of them should start. That will mean likes of Lingard and Mata stinking up the place but so be it.

We play Bournemouth at 12:30 on Saturday who don't have a game midweek. We shouldn't be risking any of the first XI for this.

Really? We're not exactly in the running for the major honors. We should be taking this competition seriously - could be our best chance of avoiding a 3rd straight cupless year. That's something that hasn't happened since the late 80's.

Feels like we always play Chelsea around Halloween time every single year. Surely someone is bothered enough to look back and see whether it's true or maybe it's just me?

Think Ole will go three at the back again, Tuanzebe, Jones and Rojo. Williams I think is a cert to play, Lingard or Mata will also get a run I believe, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Garner get a start, possibly in place of McTominay. Wonder if Laird will get a run at RB if we do play three at the back? Rashford and Martial to start, with James and Greenwood coming on second half.

Romero, Laird, Tuanzebe, Jones, Rojo, Williams, Garner, Fred, Lingard, Martial and Rashford. Grant, Maguire, McTominay, Mata, Gomes, James and Greenwood on the bench.

This, although I actually think we're pretty well set for a pen shootout. Lots of players I'd trust to take one despite our poor conversion rate in league games.
