The thing is we only have 5 or 6 players who I would consider automatic starters. By that, I mean players who if they were mussing, you'd assume it's through injury. De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Mata, Rooney and maybe Martial. That is why I don't think it is resting players per se. Blind, Memphis, Carrick and Fellaini should start IMO and apart from Fellaini, I wouldn't consider any one of them a "second team" player. Rest wise, Darmian and maybe Mata and Schweinsteiger are the only ones I think definitely need to sit this one out. Smalling, Jones, Schneiderlin, Herrera and Martial did not play too much in the international break and can be rested next midweek against Boro. My team would be: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Blind, Carrick, Herrera, Fellaini, Young, Memphis, Rooney. That doesn't look to me like a weakened team at all and it definitely should be capable of getting a good result.

I expect Carrick will start this game. And rotate with BFS after 60 mins. Probably fellaini and Herrera playing 8's. Rooney martial Mata up front. Maybe depay in for martial.

Firstly, I don't think this is a must win game. A win would put us in pole position, but a draw would be a decent result too and even a loss wouldn't be a complete disaster, because we could still qualify even if we lose in Moscow. So people who say it's a must win game must have different definition for what a must win game is. On the other hand the game against City is not a must win game either. However when I compare the importance of both games, I think that the City game should have a higher priority, because a loss to City would be more damaging to our title credentials, than a loss to CSKA would be to our chances to qualify for the next stage of the CL.

Secondly, City is a stronger opponent and the game is a local derby, so I expect the CSKA game to be the easier of the two (no disrespect or underestimating).

With that in mind I think that if we need to rotate, we should aim to rotate in such a manner as to have our strongest side against City. Luckily we are in a pretty good position, because most of our players got a bit of rest during the international break - correct me if I'm wrong, but only Blind and Memphis played two full 90 minutes for their national team, however both of them were rested against Everton, so they should be fresh enough too. I think only Mata, Schneiderlin and Martial played twice for their national side and then played against Everton, but again - none of them played the full 90 minutes during the week and Mata got subbed on the weekend too. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this international break was very beneficial to us in terms of refreshing and giving some much needed rest to our players - especially Smalling, who otherwise never gets a break.

So in short, I think we need to have only a minor rotation for this game - maybe Valencia and Blind starting for Darmian and Rojo; Memphis/Martial, Mata/Lingard and Herrera/Fellaini sharing minutes on the left wing, right wing and #10 respectively.

A draw would mean we'll probably finish 2nd but a win would put us in pole position to finish top. So it's not really a must win, but a win would be excellent for us. It also depends on how wolfsburg do against PSV. Our whole group is pretty tight overall so it's too soon to say. After this game things should look more clear.

Martial is the only one I wouldn't start. It's unreasonable to play him every single game, and the City game is one we'll need him 100% fresh for.

Memphis has had his best displays arguably in Europe, so makes sense to do a switcheroo there
    I agree with this.

    He's 19, he'll easily be able to play wednesday-sunday.

really like the CSKA crest in the OP

a solid base and rest one or two for this

I thought Lingard did well coming on at weekend and I'd give Memphis a run out on the left with Martial rested

no point in suggesting Rooney will get a rest as he never does and another goal would be great for his confidence

Give Carrick a start in this too

We can't afford to be resting players for this. Lose and we have 3 points from 3 games and still have to go away to Wolfsburg. Play the same team as V Everton.

Rojo just came back from a hamstring injury we need him for City. Give Martial a rest, he'll be so important this season and Memphis is a good player to bring back in. Valencia can come in for Darmian, Darmian has played pretty much every game for us and Italy plus I think Valencia would be good in this match.

Ideally I would want to make a couple more changes but we can't lose this one. Hopefully we can be a couple goals up and bring a couple off.

    De Gea
    Valencia--Smalling--Jones--Blind
    Carrick--Schneiderlin
    Mata--Herrera--Memphis
    Rooney

subs: Johnstone, Darmian, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Lingard, Pereira, Martial

If Young is fit put him on the bench instead of Jesse.

I see CSKA have Musa and Doumbia, two really Pacey and tricky players, which means i would probably put Blind out on the LB instead of CB, i think he would be up against Tosic there.

    DdG
    Antonio Smalling Jones Blind
    Morgan Carrick
    JMata Herrera Depay
    Rooney
That is a good side and we should be able to beat them with this, although they aren't any mugs, especially at home.

This. I thought this was so obvious but clearly had to be said.

Wouldn't say this is a must-win game, but I'd be very unhappy if we lose; would mean we probably need 9 points from the remaining 3 games. Would be happy to see some rotation though. I think keep Herrera in given that he didn't play during the international break, and is probably pretty fresh, but I'd like to see Young get some game time, maybe for Martial, who can come off the bench. Also would like to see Memphis, as he's been good in Europe and I'd like to see a response after being dropped on the weekend.

Seydou Doumbia is a big player for them, and a tricky customer up front. Aim should be to restrict service. Would be fine with a scrappy 1-0 here.

Just avoid defeat in this one and I'll be happy. It's the home games we really need to be winning, as playing on the road in Europe is always a tough task.

Swop BFS for Carrick and Martial for Memphis.
We have to keep half an eye on the City game this weekend, but underestimating CSKA is not smart

I think this game will be the first time this season where Rooney will be rested. Martial - Herrera - Mata- Memphis - Carrick - Schneiderlin - Rojo - Jones - Smalling - Darmian - De Gea

With a huge game vs City coming up I would definitely rest a few of our stars.
    Boooo.
Who wants to win the mickey mouse, unimportant CL, anyway?
Maybe we should play with our U21s team?

Joking aside, I think we need to play with our strongest team here.
If LVG loses here by fielding a B-team (like last year in the league cup), he will have egg on his face.
And besides, away games are difficult for us, so we need a strong team.

In any case, our players are very fit (P.Jones, excepted), so they should be able to play many games, in quick succession, without a rest. Remember, we are only in October.

I have a feeling Lingard's 45 minutes this weekend was a way to get him in condition for this one. He could start imo.

Few changes in order to have few fresh legs for Chitteh on Sunday. Our best performers at Everton should be rested (Smalling and Herrera). He would rather have Basti than Carrick against the big City guys

    Hopefully 1-2 for us

Would be good for Young to get a run out and let Depay respond to being dropped like someone else mentioned....

We need a strong team out please.

    Please LvG!
Schweinsteiger is not going to play 2 games in 3 days, may be come on in the last few minutes to manage a result but that'd be all LvG would ask of him. I'd prefer him kept fresh to start vs City over the weekend anyways.

Yea, possibly. I think he could 70 odd minutes with Carrick coming on to shore things up, and be fit and firing for Man City. He's can be rested following this clutch of games that are all equally important.

But I think we should play our strongest line up where possible.

I would probably rest Mata and Martial for this one and start Young and Martial on wings. Both players have played a lot, including internationals. Why not try Depay on the right in this one? Or Lingard maybe.

It will be Depay's match, my feeling tells me. Either he scores two or he sees totally frustrated red card. ;)

Has there been a explanation to why the game is not starting 17:45 BST?? The local starting time is 23:45 which somehow is OK to the Russians..
