Do away goals count, I can't remember?

Like if we score is the tie effectively over with Hull needing four?
It count but first after 120 mins.

Valencia, Zlatan and Herrera should not even travel. We need to rest players and it must start now.

Tough one to call in terms of personnel who will play. If Romero is going to play again this season in English competitions, it's got to be here or Wigan at the weekend (he may get a Europa League fixture if we've won a first leg convincingly). Of course, Jose could just go full de Gea for the rest of the season but I think he'll want Romero to have played a bit this year to stay sharper if needed.

We'll definitely see Smalling & Jones again, with Rojo coming back against Wigan if he's recovered (in place of Jones to give him a rest). Valencia will probably be rested for one of these games (he'll probably get picked against Wigan even if it's slightly sentimental to him). I'd hope Shaw is fit to play left back and it would probably be Darmian, Young, or Fosu-Mensah on the right if so (2/3 of them will probably play if Shaw isn't going to).

I think Carrick is going to play here, miss Wigan, and come back for the Premier League game. Zlatan should probably miss one of these games, while I'd like Pogba and Herrera to get subbed off after 60 minutes in at least one of the two cup games. I'm thinking Fellaini will come off the bench here, then start against Wigan. Rooney will play both of these games and be back on the bench for the Premier League. I can see Lingard starting one of the two as well.

    Romero
    Darmian Smalling Jones Shaw
    Herrera Carrick Pogba
    Lingard Rashford Rooney

Would take a draw obviously, keep the unbeaten record and advance to the final. So long as we finish off Wigan easily and beat Hull in the League next week.

It's not his fault, but I don't think it helps matters. If you're good enough, you don't look at these misses and think "that could've won us the game" you think "we should have won by more"

I'd prefer him to just stick to what has worked. Imo if he kept Rojo and Jones as our CB's, we never concede today.
Assuming you didn't know, but Rojo was apparently out with Flu. Mata was most at fault for their goal (losing his man, clipping the ball for the own goal when Smalling was better positioned to clear the cross). I'm not sure how the left sided CB of all players being in the side would have changed any of that. We'd have probably struggled more against Crouch, too.

Then they should've organised this weekend better. I can't ever remember league cup fixtures on a Tuesday.
    Thursday :p

It obviously messes the next weekend up as well, meaning Wigan have to play 2 games in 3 days as we had to be on the Sunday.

Because Us and Liverpool played today and Hull and Southampton are playing tomorrow so that ruled out the matches being on Tuesday/Wednesday like the first leg was.
    Why can't a team play Sunday-Wednesday??

I would rest Jones and keep Pogba out as well. It's time to check if Fosu-Mensah and Schweinsteiger are of any use.

We need to try two up top. Have our chances fall to actual goalscorers in the box.

They can play Sunday/Wednesday, because Southampton are. It's Sunday/Tuesday that they didn't want or else our match wouldn't be on Thursday.

Last year the 2nd leg semi-final between liverpool/Stoke was played on a Tuesday because both played on Saturday. Which likely would have been the case if Southampton or Hull had a match on Saturday but because both had a match today and the league didn't/couldn't move one of their matches to Saturday they made the semi-final 2nd legs Wednesday/Thursday instead of Tuesday/Wednesday

I'm not impressed with Mourinho in the last two games, I think he's made too many unnecessary changes to the team and formation. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I can't sit here and say "Feck Mourinho for his selection and formation" After watching Mata miss an absolute sitter, Pogba's shot get blocked because Lee Grant used the force, Lingard's shot hitting an inch over the bar. Not to mention a couple other instances like when Ibra decided to pass instead of take a shot when he was in on goal or Rashford taking a shot instead of laying it off to Ibra who would have tapped it in.

Hopefully Shaw, Fosu Mensah, Bastian, Rashford and Lingard all get a decent run out. Lets smash them! I'd be delighted with a clean sheet and a few goals going in to boos our confidence.

Do our players need rest or rhythm at this point?

    I think it's the latter.

I think we will start with strong team here and rotate against Wigan, just like was case vs Reading. We have a 2 goals lead but if they score early and we have heavily rotated, doubts may creep in players' minds.

Why does a second leg even exist? League Cup semi final should just be played at a neutral venue.
I think it is much better if they combine the League and FA Cup into one competition and knockout one at that. Plus to counter the lack of Christmas break less games should give the league and the supposed new Cup competition more quality games rather than quantity. But I guess this is for another days discussions.

Because Southampton are doing it? For obvious reasons Sky won't put two televised fixtures on the same night.

I don't get the outrage. It is what it is. We are in an excellent position and only need to score once to 99.9 % ensure a place in the final. The following weekend we are playing a struggling Championship team at home, before Hull at home on Wednesday. Next few fixtures are very kind to us.

Which is exactly how it should be, I hate the regular away goals rule.
I disagree slightly based on the fact the away team in the second leg has 120 minutes to score an away goal, whereas the other team only has 90 minutes in the first leg.

Some clearly need rest, be it mental rest, like Herrera or Ibrahimović. Others, like Jones, who played all January games, need it to prevent injuries.

No need to field our best starting 11 for this. Rest key players and play a 2nd team.

Can't see anything other than the usual starters playing in this, Jose will want to make sure we get to the final. We'll see a 2nd team against Wigan in the FA match Sunday, like Reading. They'll be on 4 days rest coming into this and then they'll get 5 days rest for the Hull league match.

    4 days off
    Hull
    5 days off
    Hull
    3 days off
    Leicester
    5 days off
    Watford
    4 days off

Unless Jose wants to use the next 2 fixtures as a mini-break for key players and field a 2nd team for this and Wigan

We wont loose, and that is enough to reach the final.

    Hope(not expecting) to see :

    -------------Romero-------------
    Young--Jones--Smalling--Shaw
    ------TFM---------Herrera------
    Miky--------Mata--------Martial
    ------------Rashford-----------

Not sure on the score, but surely we will go through. Think Jose will pick a strong side; he doesn't seem to believe in resting a lot of players at one and certainly not the younger ones. He may play Rooney ahead of Zlatan just because Wayne will be on a high after Saturday. I would have expected Carrick to have been rested but since he didn't play at Stoke, he is likely to get a game

    Gone 1-1 again.

He should just stick to his strongest XI, Chelsea and Spurs get away with it and there's no reason we shouldn't
Thing is, that's exactly what he used to do at Chelsea - same team every week without fail

We have a 2-0 lead against Hull but we cannot take them lightly if we want to reach the finals. We'll play a decent team and get an easy win. Rest Zlatan and Pogba, give them time to work on their game away from the pitch. We definitely have to kill Leicester this weekend and there is no two ways about it.

Well given we've beaten them 2-1 and 4-1 this season and they've just lost their last 2, 3-0 to Southampton and 3-0 to Chelsea and have lost 2 of 3 at home. It really shouldn't be difficult unless we make it on ourselves.

True, very good points. Only problem is, we play Wigan this weekend, not Leicester :D

Rotate against Wigan at home, which should be a walkover. Haven't included Martial because god knows what's up with him.

We better not take this lightly. Hull has 'improved' somewhat, so we need to be professional and get it done and dusted. All brain farts need to be left on the team bus.

Hope to see Martial feature in this game with Lingard coming in for Mata and Rooney starting. Not sure if I'd like Zlatan on the bench - so probably leave him out completely, but then I also feel that Zlatan could do with a jog here so that he gets back to a match rhythm/fitness.

Gonna play the waiting game with the line up predictions on this one.
