    ———————De Gea
    Dalot - Varane - Lindelof - Telles
    ————————Matic
    —————-Fred———Pogba
    ——SanchoRonaldo——Elanga

I don’t care how many minutes Matic will last, but he has to start - we need a very strong first half and specially first 20 minutes.

I don’t think Pogba played particularly well against Spurs, but I think playing him in this position affected lot of other players positively. Needs to release ball quicker.

    Magford don’t deserve to start.
    2-0 United (Fred, Ronaldo)

The worst thing is that this can go to penalties. I just can’t take a penalty shootout

Hope we get through of course but I do worry about us if we get City Liverpool or Bayern in the next round. Two legs against any of those three could be utter humiliation.

Good call, everyone reason we should play Lingard and Jones from the start, definitely...
A fit jones is better than lindelof and Maguire, as for lingard, that's because mctominay is likely out and we need energy and legs in midfield to make up for matic's physical limitations, putting jogba in this match against such a hardworking atletico side will just result in us being exposed defensively

Real naivety for me, Lingard hasn't worked hard the last few appearances and nothing makes me think he would here, he's also not physical enough to play centrally here. Jones has played once in 3 years, he was decent but you don't chuck him in here, I'm all for dropping Maguire but I'd use Lindelof or Bailly before Jones in a 2 in a match of this importance. Matic, Fred & Fernandes can play in the middle with Sancho and Elanga both working hard on the wings, it's not the time to risk bringing Jones& Lingard in and due to the lack of football they have played and the fact this will be a high intensity game, it's a risk.

We certainly won't be the ones controlling the match so we need to rely on pure effort, which is scary in itself.
The atmosphere really needs to be good in this one, and obviously the players mentalities too.

Personally, I think this will play out much the same as the previous tie. Hopefully we show abit more dynamism though.

It will be McFred in midfield. RR said McT could have played yesterday but he didn’t want to risk him. No idea what’s got into Fred yesterday, like a man possessed and better for it. We should win if we score early.

If the crowd is up for it and makes some noise then they'll be the 12th man. I think we need them for this game. Need to be looking to score at least 2 goals.

Atletico will park the bus as they always do. They aren’t coming to attack which means they will cede control.
It’s what Simeone does every single time

Against good sides he does, not average ones like ourselves.

With Matic in the side playing further back and no Bruno drifting about, Fred can play in his best position which IMO is 10 yards further forward. Yesterday his interchanges on the edge of the opposition box with both CR and Pogba was really good at times and held some promises of things to come (that's where he plays for Brazil).

Exactly my thought. Think all these big teams will be willing Utd on to win so they can face us the the next round. Very depressing!

Agree with this, hes better further forward disrupting play and moving the ball quickly. Curious to see how he would do with a sitting midfielder behind him like a young Matic and Bruno on RCM.

Old Trafford rocking - Get ready

I wish those two are teaming up at UTD next season.

As for the Ath Madrid match, more of the same from Ronaldo please.

We are at home, let's not mess this up & yeah, Maguire I'm looking at you in particular.

Make that 3 because athetico will score one and there's always maguire to gift another.

I'd fancy our chances in a knockout if we can pack the midfield and score a jammy goal.

Although i think we can't start with maguire, i much prefer the lindelof and varane partnership. And we'd need mct, fred and matic in midfield along with sancho and either bruno or pogba with ronaldo alone upfront.

It is very likely to be our last CL game in 2022. Hopefully, I am hugely mistaken.

Athletico are favouries I think. I can't wait for the game but Utd will need a top defensive performance to win.

We go two goals down and ronaldo injury time hattrick gets us through, the ot roof gets blown off and we fix the leaking problem aswell.

Pretty sure we'll get outplayed, but that doesn't necessarily mean we'll lose. We'll need to be clinical with the one or two good chances we create and also rely on DDG to put in a motm performance. 1-0 or 2-1 win for us

I hope Bruno will be back. Although Matic seemed good on some times, I don't think he puts any effort on the pitch, I never see him slide for a ball or challenge seriously. A good example is yesterday's cancelled Reguilon goal. I'd still go with McFred.

:) Spot on... maybe Ralf is' going to be the first manager to play people in their right place, not shoehorning players in wherever....even if at times that means others have to miss out, a balanced team...now that' would be a novel idea, wonder if it will catch on??

We would most likely get them knowing our luck in draws. I’d want us to get either benfica/Ajax or wouldn’t mind juventus/villareal. City are nailed on to get another easy draw like they always do so they’ll probably get either us or the winners of the benfica game.

AWB and Maguire can not start this game. Please.

I feel like yesterday’s game, the manner in which we won it, came at the perfect time. Like him or not (can’t believe I have to say that on a Utd forum), Ronaldo scoring goals lifts all the players and fans like nothing else. OT will be rocking and I think we’ll win 2-1.

Will Bruno be available for this one? I thought he contracted Covid but I could be wrong.

I expect a cagey game with us marginally going through without ever looking convincing. A quarterfinal appearance will be quite an achievement for this bunch

His positional sense as a DM is better that’s why. He’s also better on the ball than Scott. I would start him and play the same midfield as Saturday

Utd just have to make sure they are not bullied off every ball like the 1st half of the 1st leg. They are at home and they should be looking to intimidate and physicslly dominate Athletico, but that is unlikely due the lack of balls this Utd team has.

    Bruno-----Cristiano--------Sancho
    -----------Pogba---Fred-----------
    ----------------Matic---------------
    Telles-Varane--Lindelof-------Dalot
    ------------------De Gea--------------------

Almost went for Maguire at CB but we're at home and just need to win and have extra time if we need so risking the possible Maguire calamity probably isn't worth the upside if he does have a good game.
