The problem is we can’t even counter attack anymore… think ETH has took that trait out of the team. If we can’t score in build up play then we won’t be able to score at all. We’re limited to how we can actually score… set pieces is a no go since we’re awful at them.
And here I was thinking that the goal we scored against Arsenal was a counter-attack.

I normally hate international breaks, but I think it's come at the right time.

Allows Amrabat and Højlund to get some much needed minutes under their belts. Gives Martinez and Lindelof time to recover after coming off yesterday. It also gives ETH some time to access exactly what's gone wrong these last few weeks and put it right.

Three points, a decent performance and a team with Amrabat and Højlund in it, things will start to seem a bit brighter.

    Ferguson vs Hojlund

Will be a good match to see the pair of them, and it's a much fairer comparison than the ones the media will no doubt make to Haaland to bash Hojlund whenever he has a bad game.

Assuming that Lindelöf and Martinez make it back in time:

    ..................... Onana ....................
    AWB - Lindelöf - Martinez - Dalot
    ......... Casemiro - Amrabat ..........
    ..... Antony - Bruno - Rashford ....
    .................... Højlund ...................

On paper, I like that team and it has good balance. Eriksen to come on if needed for one of the three behind Hojlund to keep the ball and control the game more.

ETH vs de Zerbi is the major event.

What is it you've seen in the first four matches that makes you believe that we will win this one easily?

They are scoring buckets of goals and we're leaking goals like a sieve.

There are no straightforward matches for us anymore, and even if there were going to be, Brighton are not who it'll happen against.

We were defensively solid yesterday before we had to make forced defensive substitutions.
We created many chances against Spurs first half and both halfs against Forest.
We have massively improved our press resistance as evidenced yesterday

We'll be playing with an actual CF instead of 10 men

United hit arsenal on the break twice clinically yesterday? One counted one was marginally (maybe) offside. United are effective on thr counter. Hence they were trying to draw arsenal out but arsenal were having none of it (sensibly).

The biggest problem was united didn't have another plan. United looked much better when Rasmus come on. Just because the ball didn't bounce off him every time. United will score more goals with him in the team even if he doesn't score them. Simply because other teams have someone other than rashford to worry about.

Eh? We nullified Arsenal completely, only when injuries came and we were forced to play Maguire and Evans we crumbled, and even then it was by a deflection. Also we will have Amrabat and actual striker etc.

But let's ignore all that and be a usual miserable Caf pessimist.

That's a very odd take to come away from the match with.

I was expecting them to press harder than they did, but they seemed content to let us knock the ball around in our own half while they waited for us to give it away once we tried to push it forward, which we inevitably do more often than not.

They exposed us badly on the Odegaard goal, and let's not forget that Havertz and Saka both had bad misses that they should've converted. We easily could've been 3-1 down much earlier in the match, and Lindelof also got away with a very bad challenge on the touchline, let's not forget that.

Of course we were pretty unlucky on the Garnacho goal and Hojlund absolutely should've got a penalty, so there's that.

1-1 would've been a fair result in the end, but to say that we nullified them completely is looking at this match with the rosiest colored glasses in the world.

They are slight favourites for me.

Yet somehow contrive to finish below us every single year. And will somehow manage to do so again this season I imagine, despite apparently being better than us at everything.

    Last three league meetings:

    Brighton 4-0 United
    United 1-2 Brighton
    Brighton 1-0 United

    Highest scorers in the league:

    12 - Brighton
    12 - Spurs
    11 - 115 Charges

But of course, we'll easily beat Brighton, Bayern away and anyone else who dares stand in our way.

I really shouldn’t bite here, as I’m sure neither of us require the segway where I come and say ‘that’s not what I said’ because I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt of being able to see that for yourself.

Anyway, despite all of your numbers, somehow, feck knows how, they still manage to be worse than us every single year, and have never ever finished above us. I imagine that is as a result of them losing more football matches than we do. Every year. Yet people struggle to see how we can beat this team.

Brighton are the best ran club in the business and have constantly wiped the floor with us in recent years. The irony of going on about "being able to see that for yourself" when you yourself fail to acknowledge ("feck knows how") the main reason we finish above them. If we had even an ounce of their club management skills with our resources we'd be beating them comfortably most of the times and none of this would even be a discussion.

You're rambling on like Ty from AFTV. Pure and utter delusion. Maupay doesn't play for them anymore, no need to be this angry.

Great, next game against a team we can't ever seem to beat. Or draw against. Feck's sake.

Can't we just ask to bring the Burnley game forward instead? :D

Brighton have "constantly wiped the floor with us in recent years"

Last league meeting was a 1-0 loss whereby the only goal came from a penalty in the 99th minute, weren't wiped on the floor there

Meeting before then was in the FA Cup semi final, 0-0 after extra time with United winning on penalties , again weren't wiped on the floor.

Old Trafford meeting last season a 2-1 defeat in a game that Brighton had just 37% possession and 222 less passes, deserved their win as they defended and attacked better but wiped the floor they did not.

Overall Premier league record against Brighton in Old Trafford (2017 to 2023 all recent years)

    P6 W5 D0 L1 scored 11 and conceded 5

This game can't come soon enough. So much doom and gloom around the club. Hope to see Amrabat and Hojlund in the starting line up to bring some much needed passion.

Ya I really don't understand that take.

The penalty came from a freekick where a Brighton player dove and the ref (that idiot Mariner) bought it.

That 2-1 loss Brighton was only the better team for about 10 minutes which is when they got their 2 goals.

He'll be well rested for this match.
He's also carrying a knee injury that's forced Ireland to drop him days in advanced of crucial Euro qualifying matches against France and Netherlands.

I think we will win this one giving us false hope papering over the cracks and then get tonked by Bayern leaving us all confused and lost. It might just happen the other way around, lose to brighton and win Bayern and still I wouldn't be one bit surprised. The point is we have absolutely not stability as a team both from the tactical perspective and the personnel perspective. We have a gaping hole running through the spine of team and with all the Antony/Sancho/Mason news etc., we are an absolute circus still finding our feet even after outspending most of our rivals. Our only hope is to wait and see how it pans out in the long run. Its not looking good right now.

It’s not that confusing. We’d win yet another home match and lose away against a top team again. This has been us under ETH. It’s not the worst way to build a team to first build up a great predictability, even if said predictability is depressing at times. Confusing is losing to Sheffield United at home and beating City away like under Ole.

If we can make OT a fortress again this season I’d take losses away to the likes of Bayern, where it should be clear to all anyway that at this moment we are way behind

You are right if we go only by results. But if we go by performance, so far it has been more Ole than ETH. I just hope we settle down as a team and rather play a good game win/lose - that would be progress. As opposed to getting outplayed and nicking it and wait for the law of averages to catch up to us. Its been dire so far. Hojlund was great last game, and with Amrabat incoming, I can only wait in hope.

Really want to see something else on the right wing. Anthony offers nothing. Hopefully he can get a bit of a partnership going with an actual striker on the pitch, but I honestly think it's pelestri's time.

When mount is available Id like to see him tried from the right too.

I kind of feel like Ole is the natural state they're always gravitating back towards and have to be dragged elsewhere. I feel like we've gradually looked better and more organised over the 4 games. I think if we played against Arsenal as we did against Wolves we would have been destroyed.
