People say Mata and Mkhitaryan are too similar, but what formation would be more adequate when we have none of them? And would Mourinho keep both out? I'm seeing a lot of 4-3-3's here, but I guess 3-5-2 would be more adequate.

I hope Shaw is back for this one.

Will be good to get some minutes for Lindelof, Tuanzebe and Carrick too.

I think Fellaini is in good enough shape that he might be used here, and if Burton sit deep it would make sense to have an aerial threat with Lukaku presumably resting:

    -------Rashford--------
    Martial------------Lingard
    ----Fellaini-Herrera----
    --------Carrick----------
    Blind-------------Darmian
    --Lindelof--Smalling-----
    --------Romero----------

Like that team :). Just would like to see maybe one young player getting a game though. Still the most important thing is getting the win and I might underestimate Burton.

Jose likes his cups, I don't think he'll go quite as weak as some are suggesting.

Shaw will hopefully get 25 minutes in the second half.
Agreed but that's still only 3 of our usual starters, 4 if you count Martial and the rest have only played twice at the most this season. It shows the strength in depth we have, I just hope they perform.

True and it's particularly good that we can field 2 different International CB pairings across competitions. I think they'll perform as right now Mourinho is fostering an evironment of competitoion for starts.

Mata could use a goal. Would like to see Shaw, but i'm not sure how fit he is.

I'm not bothered about the team as long as there's plenty of rotation and one of Rashford or Martial gets a go through the middle.

To prevent early injuries and fill up their powerbars, i would definitely rest: Dave, Bailly, Valencia, Matic, Rashford, Lukaku, Miki

Play Romero, Young, Lindelof, Carrick, Martial, Herrera combined with youngers

We should rest all the first team players and only play with backups and young players like Tuanzebe.

    Would go with

    Romero

    Tuanzebe Lindelof Smalling

    Darmian Herrera Carrick Shaw

    Lingard Martial Mitchell

Something like this, 3 at the back as don't want Tuanzebe to play as RB and good opportunity to test few more tactical formations.

    Or

Instead of mitchell it's Rashford and Lingard plays behind strikers to switch to 3-5-2.

Surely a game for Shaw and Carrick this ?

I'd like to see Tuanzebe involved too.

Apart from that we are likely to see a strong team.

Carrick should get a game but this league cup, that too against a weaker opposition at Home, is a perfect platform for a youngster to shine. So I would hope McTominay to start with Fellaini and Herrera.

    ----------------Romero----------------------

    ---Tuanzebe---Smalling---Lindelof---Blind---

    ----Fellaini---McTominay------
    --------Herrera ---------

    ------Lingard---Martial----Mata------

Give Shaw / Gomez 35 mins each.

Yeah that would be a good and unsurprising team. McTominay, Axel and maybe Gomes on the bench would be good.

Is Shaw actually anywhere near playing though? Has gone all quiet again. Otherwise it'd be the perfect low risk return

I'll be disappointed if we concede. We've got something to really hang on to at the minute and while our unblemished home record won't last forever hopefully we can keep it going for another few games and then we will get a feeling of real invincibility at OT.

I think Jose will go quite strong for this one, he doesn't generally take too many chances in games like this.

Changed my line-up prediction. Forgot about Tuanzebe so I think he'll play here.

    Romero
    Darmian - Lindelof - Smalling - Shaw
    Carrick - Tuanzebe - Herrera
    Mata - Martial - Lingard

    Young Lindelof Smalling Shaw

    Nice, stress-free midweek then, please.

3-0 United. Hopefully Carrick and Herrera get to stretch their legs a bit and shake off the rust.

You think Young is going to start his 3rd game in a week after playing a full 180 minutes in two consecutive games right after being out for almost half a year?

Wish we could get more youngsters in but I realise those days are gone and I'm not necessarily complaining.
