Seems redundant to have McTominay playing at home against a side that will sit deep, but I guess we don't really have a choice.

Just win this somehow, we have 37 games to go. It's going to be a loooooong season, boys.

Anything but the 4231 please, it's a horrible redundant system with Jose.
4-3-3 hasn't been great either. If anything our best football under Mourinho has come in 4-2-3-1 with games like Leicester at home in 2016 and even games like the 0-0 draw with Burnley but we still had something like 40 shots on goal. 4-3-3 will only work if you have goal scorers out wide like Bale. Players like Mata and Lingard don't have enough end product for us to play the extra midfield player.

I can’t wait for the season to start! Haven’t watched any pre-season games (normal for me) so I’m not as miserable as the majority of the forum. :D
Unfortunately, I did watch the pre-season games. The plan was to win/draw games by scoring 1 goal.
Unfortunately, 1 goal per 90 minutes is all we had in our locker. :(

The real fotball starts now! Maybe keep that in mind, all of you who I’ve seen calling this season a write-off already:lol: We’re Manchester United, grow a pair and find your cool people:keano:
I certainly do have a pair, but going into a season, where we don't have the weaponry to compete against the best teams is depressing.
To know, that the board have effectively said that they don't want to push to win the league and that we have to make do with the squad we have, while having plenty of money in the bank (MUFC have plenty of cash to splash, if they choose to do so), also adds to the depression.

The only hope we have is that Jose creates a tactic which gets us results - maybe allows us to win every match 1-0 or something like that, which somehow gets us the league title.

If we are going to challenge for the title, we are going to do it by grinding out matches, with low scorellines.

Bench is difficult to judge - could include Fellaini, Pogba, Lukaku, Martial, Lingard etc. However, it's probably more likely to include Jones/Lindelof/Young. José will just be praying that he can have game changers and players with physical presence to push forward at the end if it comes to that.

At least this is probably a Leicester without Kante, Mahrez, Maguire, and Vardy for the first time? Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case (especially as two of them don't even play for Leicester now )

Rather play Mata in midfield and put martial or rashford on the right. Mctominay is pointless.

Amazing how short we look on this team prediction. Vital we start with a win, otherwise the knives will really be out for Mou.

I get it, but it’s still way over the top to call it a ‘write-off’ before the season has even begun! I share your concerns, but this is interesting in it’s own way. José has been backed in his time here, and if the board believes he hasn’t delivered (which I agree with) then he has to rise to the challenge or be gone next season. Perhaps some underachievers start to show their true colors, and the team performs, the summer will then be forgotten. If not, well, maybe José has lost his mojo after all. All pure speculation and conjecture at this point anyway.

I guess it’s all about perspective, and mine is:
    1. We finished 2nd last season
    2. Haven’t really strengthened much relative our competition, but have adressed an important area I was pretty underwhelmed with last season (CM). In others, I can hardly believe we haven’t (LB/RB) if Dalot cannot surprise us.
    3. Have a strong core of players who’ve had one more year under the same manager.

So my expectation would be on par with last seasons finish.

You just know slab head will get an equaliser or winner. I could actually see us losing this game and then I think the meltdowns will truly begin especially after our inept transfer window.

    To all Manchester United fans,

The transfer window is pretty much over, and as we all know it wasn’t a great one. However, as we all love our great club, Manchester United, lets forget all about this transfer window before this season and this opening game starts and get behind the team! To all the match-going fans, sing and cheer your hearts out tomorrow and be the 12th man for the team to win. We have been handed the opening game this season for the entire league, so lets get a nice and exciting win to set a good tone for our season and the season in a whole itself. Lets go lads. This season will be a rollercoaster of emotions, lets hope in a good way!

I hope we win this, because if not, this place is about ready to explode. We should win it easily so hopefully it’s a good Friday night game.

Let’s hope Maguir has a ‘mare and is bullied by Lukaku. Big big season for Shaw too. I hope he can find the form he was in before the leg break.

    Reds 3-1.

Assuming so. José specifically mentioned only Romero, Valencia, Herrera, Dalot, Rojo, and Matic as unavailable. Although, PhysioRoom.com suggest Bailly is likely to miss the Leicester game with an ankle injury. So, make of that what you will.

Young, Fellaini, Pogba, Lingard, and Lukaku will all have late fitness tests to determine which can feature (assuming most of them will be on the bench tomorrow).

Had trouble picking a complete starting XI + 3 subs for the prediction. Ended up with:

    Predicted Starting XI
    David de Gea
    Eric Bailly
    Chris Smalling
    Luke Shaw
    Matteo Darmian
    Fred
    Scott McTominay
    Andreas Pereira
    Alexis Sanchez
    Juan Mata
    Marcus Rashford

    Predicted Substitutes
    Victor Lindelof
    Jesse Lingard
    Ashley Young

Not sure if Lingard and Young are ready

I like the look of this team the most but probably too attack minded for Jose to put out.

I am hoping with Matic out our midfield will move the ball quickly and press our opponents in their own half.

Joses talk about how he wants to change our tactics is very promising. Hopefully we'll see a few signs of this for the Leicester-game, though I sort of expect a tumescent and boring game once more. Hopefully we'll get a win, and keep building on the result to create some positivity around the club (atleast on the Caf) once more.

Personally I'd swap Martial and Sanchez. Sanchez is proven centre forward but lacks the pace on the wing, while Martial always seems to end up on left anyway.

Alright the end of the transfer window likely didn't go as many would have liked, but we are on to the season. Come on United! Let's get behind the squad we have!

This one will be interesting as we always seem to have difficulties handling Vardy's pace on the counter, and with players missing that were at the World Cup it could be even more difficult. I'll take 3 points and not worry too much about the overall performance as I don't know who we will line up with to start.

    When did Jose say this?
    In the press conference:

“The target is the Leicester match and the tactics to be changed - in Championship Manager you can just press a button. In football, you need time to work and you need players on the pitch to work with which we didn't have until now. I said that during pre-season - it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, it looked like I was saying something crazy – but I repeat, pre-season is difficult when you don't have your players to work with. It's as simple as that.”

if mou was working on any tactic change during the preseason it certainly didn't translate to the pitch. Hopefully we see whatever change he is referring to against leicester.

I suppose it's a change to accommodate the youth temporarily
Well, he's talking about changing the tactic but not being able to train on the changes until 'his' players are back. So I doubt it's to accomodate the youths.

Well whatever he's talking about (for me it's unclear), he specifically says he can't work on it until he has his senior players back. So no, it wouldn't have been noticeable in pre-season, when we were fielding a hotchpotch of fringe players and kids.

I mean, we weren't very exciting for parts of last season but at no point did our football in any way resemble what you describe. Not all 'bad football' is the same.

When we were dull it was either 1) against weak opponents who sat back and we had a lot of the ball in their half but didn't seem to have enough pace and imagination to our play to break them down, or 2) when we set out unnecessarily negatively against top sides and played a limp impression of counter-attacking football when we should have stuck to our own player's strengths and had a go.

Thank feck that transfer window is over. Time to play footie. I always start each season being optimistic until I truly see reasons to worry. We still have some great players. Some now with the PL experience they didn't have before.

Let's start this season off right and forget about all that transfer bs.
