Also, after Saturday, and the fact that Mbappe will be down the centre, I really hope Smalling starts... he's our quickest defender, and not that he'll be able to keep up with Mbappe, but it'll be a better effort then Jones.

Then, the last thing is of course having Ander pressing Verratti. The Italian didn’t play for 6 weeks and is only training for 5 days. Ander should be on his toe and I am sure that this tie will be played in midfield. Marquinhos will not hurt Pogba much if he’s playing at his best, Ander must mark Verratti and don’t let him play, when Matic should absolutely take care of Draxler or Di Maria coming inside.
    - Herrera on Verratti

    ----------------------Mbappe-----------------------
    ------------Snakeman---------Draxler------------
    Bernat--------Verratti---Marquinho------Alves
    -----Kimpembe—Thiago Silva------Kehrer------
    ----------------------Buffon-------------------------
The battle is not Herrera vs Verratti but Verratti vs Pogba.

    ----------------------Mbappe-----------------------
    --------------Draxler------------Snakeman
    Bernat--------Marqinhos---Verratti-----Alves
    -----Kimpembe—Thiago Silva------Kehrer------
    ----------------------Buffon-------------------------

The arrogance of the French pundits is mind boggling. So much so that I want this to be a complete razzia, just for them to realize what's really happening. I demand at least 3-0.
Who are these French pundits? The troll @BalanceUnAutreJoint ?

The PSG bench: Youth League level--- Nkunku, Diaby...

PSG will still have a stronger starting XI than we do, their bench players are better than our starters at severals positions.
    They're atrociously bad these days.

Better hope they show up the way they're playing now.

Especially Mbappe. He's missing so many 1 on 1 duels with the keeper It's insane.
He's been atrocious in open play for months. His statistics are inflated from the amount of goals PSG scores and Neymar being right behind to deliver insane balls.
Literally all french football twitter talks about is how crap Mbappe has been playing and It's filled with "Xavi was right about him" comments every day.
So allow me to disagree here.

I haven't had this buzz about a European tie since the Real Madrid second leg in 2013. Can't wait.

Whilst Mbappe, Draxler and Di Maria pose a threat, we've definitely got the edge on them.

In what world is Smalling quicker than Bailly? Bailly is absolutely rapid, perhaps the fastest CB I have seen at the club. Someone on the page before saying he's slow? What?

Dunno if he's quicker but you play Bailey up there like Smalling is slow. Smalling is one of the fastest CBs in the World at full sprint.

Yeah I've seen it mentioned a couple of time and I'm scratching my head. Smalling isn't as fast as Bailly. The guy nullified Vardy and Aubamenyang's pace like nothing. Even Rashford mentioned that Bailly is the hardest defender he's had to deal with in training and the kid is pacy.

I don't know why, but this game reminds me of the AC Milan CL ties where we came back from behind and won 3-2 in the first leg, then lost 3-0 in the second leg after we had some injuries.
You're not Ole! Who are you?!

Opinions are different and that’s why we have a forum. Bailly may be faster but is more errror prone and lesser experienced than Smalling. I like Bailly but for an important game, I would put Smalling if fit in there in a heartbeat.

Bailly is a red card waiting to happen.

Smalling is far better at CB

That comes from the reports and interviews and players saying Smalling is the fastest in the club. I think it was last season mind you and things change.

Smalling is the fastest United player in the squad, according to the stats.
Stats only measure top speed don’t they? Remember Rooney used to top the charts a few years ago when everyone could see that he wasn’t among the fastest in the league. Bailly is as fast as Aubameyang. Smalling has a good top speed, but his acceleration is very poor, so poor in fact that I woudn’t call him a ‘fast’ center back.

Think this was stats from training, like official stats released by United and it was over 100m.

First time in yonks I’m looking forward to a blockbuster champions league game without being resigned to getting tonked before a balls even been kicked. Last I felt that was the Real Madrid game in 2013.

it will be. you going home or away? Or both?
Just the home match. Only way to get tickets was take the whole package from the agent. Ridiculous money but I agree, it should be a massive occasion. We need to make serious noise tomorrow.

    Regarding Bailly vs Jones.

I’ve always rated Bailly highly even in the periods where seemingly everyone didn’t rate him. It’s clear to me that his top level is significantly higher than for instance Smalling. Now, he’s someone who needs games to get into that sort of form where he doesn’t make those mistakes on and off the ball. I’m not sure he has had enough games yet after his recent injury, but I believe there shouldn’t be any issues with playing him against PSG. He has the pace to match Mbappe, and the defensive presence to deal with PSGs attacking play.

I gave up on Jones a long time ago, but I have to say that his recent performances has made me reconsider him. I thought he was around 28 years old, but just realized he’s only 26. There’s a heck of a player in him somewhere and we keep seeing glimpses of that every now and then. I remember our games against Real Madrid in the CL in was it 2013? I think he played as a defensive midfielder in the away game against them and he was so dominant. One of his best games ever probably. That proves that he has got the mentality, and obviously the experience, to play in games like the one tomorrow. But then again, I can see Mbappe embarrassing him. Jones has previously had a tendency to end up in areas where his weak pace has been exposed. He wasn’t that slow 6-7 years ago, and it’s a bit of a worry if we play him that we’re going to press high, Jones is out of position and ends up 1v1 against Mbappe similarly to when Mbappe destroyed Rojo during the world cup.

Bottom line; I’d prefer Bailly, but only just. Jones has improved a lot lately and has proven to be someone we can rely on in big games.

Yeah, 100m is a very irrelevant distance when it comes to football. A pitch is 105m long, and a 100m test doesn’t really test acceleration. Players never sprint 100m during games. A 20-30m test would be far more relevant, and I’m sure Bailly would beat Smalling in such a test.

    Nobody said Bailly is slow?

But yeah as others have said, Smalling often gets mentioned when our players talk about who is the quick... why I would pick him as our quickest CB. Doesn't mean Bailly is slow though.

    Who to play with Lindlehof?

Jones - He's been decent, tbf to him, but their is always that blunder risk.

Bailly - Never quite sure about him.

Smalling - Been out for a while but soon grew into the game yesterday, arguable our 2nd best defender and not a bad foil for Linde.

Its not that difficult. You are both right. In a sprint Bailly will lead Smalling the first 20-25 meters then Smalling will take over and probably beat Bailly with ease thereafter. They are both very fast players albeit in a ltb different way.

Yeah. Exactly. For the same reason top speed that is always quoted on here as eveidence is pretty much irrelevant as well since it is usually reached after 60-70 meters and its really not very often you run straight forward in a football game for that amount of distance. Would be interesting to see Smalling vs Bailly over 30 ms though, I agree Bailly would probably lead most of the race, but coming up towards 30m Smalling is a monster. He is probably one of the fastest CBs in the world over a ltb longer distance.

    We should go all in.
Home game against a weakened PSG. That is a chance you don’t get often. The away game will be really hard no matter the score in the first leg so we should try to score as many as possible and keep a clean sheet. Score 1 away goal and we should be good.

If Smalling had played the whole last game, I probably would have preferred him. But I think Ole gives priority to "safety" and chooses those who have played the most under him, Jones and Lindelof.

Without Cavani and Neymar, they don't have a better team than us, not at all. I also don't know any of their bench players being better than our starters.

Genuinely can’t wait for this. Swapped into an on call shift today instead of tomorrow just to be able to watch it. On a 5 day 12 hour stretch, but it’ll be worth it to be able to watch United play in a CL match at a time when I’m excited to see how we do.

Need a good result to head back to Paris. Two goal lead will be huge. I back our counter attaching prowess against them at their place to do damage.

Smalling turns as quick as the Titanic. Not sure some of you are on about. Defending against the likes of Mbappe isn't about a 100 dash in a straight line.
