Jamie Vardy is a month older than Cavani. He scored 23 goals in the league last season. Does he seem to you a player who likes to conserve his energy?
I think Vardy starting his professional career later than most has helped preserve him. Less mileage on the clock. And no serious injuries either. Ian Wright was similar. Didn't turn pro until 22 years of age.

Vardy has also been smart enough to retire from international football and has mainly played 1 game a week at Leicester due to them rarely qualifying for Europe. He uses things like cryotherapy after games. He's similar to Ronaldo in that sense. Looking after himself.

Cavani has been playing in Europe's top leagues since the age of 19. 717 senior career appearances and counting. And still playing for Uruguay, which isn't ideal.

5 posts limit, so threw it in here. If you reply to it, I'll respond in the Cavani thread later.

Also whenever we played Shaw and Williams together last season, it was always Williams who was trusted as the defensive one with Shaw as the furthest forward.
This is not correct. Last season as well, Shaw was playing at LCB, and Williams as the wing back. Williams is better offensively than Shaw, and Shaw is better defensively.

What do you mean, ‘due some good luck’? They’ve also been pretty gash in matches this season. How does it suddenly mean they’re due good luck?
I mean that we have had two matches against them in which we have defended and hit on the break, and tackles and blocks have gone our way more than theirs. And some of that is luck. One different bounce, one mistimed challenge, and both matches could have had different outcomes.

With no new injuries and Donny doing the presser:

    --------------------------------- DDG -------------------------------

    AWB ---------- Lindelof -------- Maguire -------- Telles

    ------------------------------ McTom -----------------------------

    --------------- Fred ----------------------- VDB ------------------

    --------------------------------- Bruno ------------------------------

    ------------------- Cavani ----------- Rashford ---------------

I'm really interested in how this will go. I'd be happy for us to shithouse a draw. PSG haven't exactly been free scoring in the UCL so far. Surely Cavani has earned a starting spot. Martial will return against west ham

Getting the same feeling as pre Soton. One of those "and we didn't turn up" game. That was on before Bruno, Cavani and Rashford decided to drag our arses through to the final whistle. I wanna say PSG will be well up for this game but I doubt it.

Any PSG fans on here know what's up with the club? They seem such a shell of themselves this season after getting to the CL final, think they've already lost as many games in Ligue 1 as they did all last season, and have made some strange decisions in the transfer market - like letting Silva go and then saying they wish they hadn't. Not sure if it's a case of Tuchel vs Leonardo?

Cant see Cavani starting. PSG are open to counter attacks because their forwards dont track back and their midfield are stretched between supporting the attack and protecting the back 4.
Cavani is more of a we need a goal against low blocks type imo.

Good team. If McTominay is fit I’d go for that.

If he's facing a ban, I'm sure he'll get minutes or even start

Dont think missing 3 games is all that harmful when its like a week and a half in the current climate!
I do think hes a better option off the bench if PSG grab the lead and sit back as they did v RBL but I don't know if thats in a managers thinking

One of those games is City, I'd prefer him on the pitch for a game of that magnitude

Really interested to see how we approach this game, I am thinking something like this with a bit of flexibility:

    de Gea
    McTominay Maguire Lindelof
Wan-Bissaka van de Beek Fred Telles
    Bruno
    Cavani Rashford

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Telles
    Fred
    McTominay van de Beek
    Bruno
    Cavani Rashford

Martial is fine so might start, but I think the option to bring on Martial, Greenwood, and Pogba if we need a goal is looking good, along with Matic/Williams if we need to hold on.

    AWB - McTominay - Maguire - Shaw/Lindelof - Telles
    van de Beek - Fred
    Greenwood - Cavani - Martial

Rest Bruno and Rashford if possible. I'd play Pogba instead of Cavani as advanced midfielder if Paul is available.

The more I think about it I think all 3 will start with Rashford on the right. Use the space out wide that their front 3 leaves behind. Rashford had a really good second half in the first tie out there.

Quite worried about today because it will be a different PSG to the last game where they missed Marquinos, Verrati etc.

If Istanbul beat Leipzig, we are through, right? Will take all the anxiety out of the game if that result goes our way.

Yep, barring defeat today and Leipzig battering us 6-0 in the next round.

Hopefully Istanbul beat Leipzig so we’re all but qualified before kick off. Don’t trust us to get a draw when we need one.

Cavani and Suarez provided some of the best counter attacking football I've ever seen at the last world cup.

But Cavani is 33 now. He works hard and all but Martial is better at that side of the game as we stand right now. He provides pace and a lot of the hold up play that brings our attackers up the pitch

Your probably right. I don't think there's much in it. I also don't think you can drop Cavani after last weekend.

Shaw being out is massive. Basically rules out his 5 at the back he seems to go with in these games.

I watched McTominay a lot in that position for Scotland and although he was solid for the most part, when he came up against Manor Solomon when we played Israel who is a very pacey player he turned Scott inside out so i would dread to see what Mbappe would do to him, Axel was brilliant mostly due to his pace and how effective he is at using his strength, Scott's strengths back there is his clearing ability and bringing the ball out from the back, as scary as it sounds I think Bailly might be a better fit for that role for the night but it's Bailly so you never know what you will get.
Issue there would be that Bailly is lacking competition and is only back from injury. And to be honest, knowing that he is an absolute liability, it would be a huge gamble.

I would also rather get Scott in midfield as I am not really in favor of changing player's natural position.

So it will be 4-3-3 then, or maybe AWB as RCB with Williams RB (but Williams vs Mbappe will be funny), or TFM as RCB

Im nervous, they're due a win against us and I feel they want to batter us to prove a point, especially the way the last 2 games have gone!

Stick a player on Verratti. Just like SAF did on Pirlo. Or Jose put Herrera on Hazard.

Why I said James was to tire their defense out. Fresh legs and fresh mind against tiring defense is common sense.
They have to attack us no matter what because they have to win the game. So it means they will have to leave space behind their defense. James can keep running into that space and forcing their defense to sprint too.
Remember what is important is to concede less goals than the opposition in this match.
They know that Cavani has no pace so they are not worried about the space behind the defense.
By playing James we create doubt in their minds.

Big pressure on Ole for this one. Too negative and think we will lose. To me it doesn’t look like we have the players for a 5 at the back so I think I’d want him to try and take the game to PSG a little more. We can certainly hurt them.
No I don't think there's a lot pressure this match on Ole. We're actually in a very good position. I'd say the pressure is huge on PSG side. They must win.

Imo whether he decides to sit back and counter. Or go toe to toe with PSG this match will tell a lot about Ole's characters I think.

Same as me. My only dilemma is does Cavani have enough speed to press and effectively counter attack against fresh PSG defenders? Is it better to have the pace and dribbling trickery of Martial to start, and bring on Canavi on 65 mins to run at tiring PSG defenders with his movements, which will create space for other United attackers to counter attack into?

I do like this formation in big games and but for the Arsenal game it’s worked. I’m not particularly scared of PSG’s midfield, so if we dominate this area their attackers will be left isolated and we control the game.

Yeah, it's a tough call between Cavani and Martial for me (although it could be Greenwood as well). I'd favour Cavani very slightly now because Martial isn't in as good recent form and was ill, so even though he might have trained and is mostly fine, his fitness is probably further away from 100% than Cavani.
