Not going into panic mode but we need atleast 4 top players immediately if we want to compete for anything.

The thing is Rooney is actually one of the main culprits of playing the ball outwide, again today too
Yes, He started doing it more in the second half, I thought, but I guess he too was getting desperate and as he was seeing that it wasn't gonna happen through the middle he started moving more towards the wide areas and started passing outwide to at least get a bit more involved. Obviously this is not the solution, you can complain about players like Rooney and Mata but they are world class players and of course they have to take some responsibility themselves, but they can hardly pass the ball towards themselves, they're depended on getting balls from midfield and the defense plays a huge part in this too!

It's only the first game but it shows that our problems weren't all miraculously solved in preseason, we are weak at the back, poor in midfield and our attack lacks pace and balance. LVG can work on that but he needs new players to stand any chance of getting us back in the top 4.

A lot of people were expecting 6 wins from our supposedly easy start, 10 or 11 points is more realistic

Damn. All the wait for this?
I hope this makes us spend! The only assessment van Gaal should have gotten now is that our squad lacks quality in key positions like CM

Atleast four? come on, the glazers would rather sell the club than buying four or five players.

Scholes' commentary is a but annoying to be honest, all he can say is how he thinks we should always have wingers flying at the opposition, and somehow possession based football is 'not for this club'..

The only point to come from this game is the need for new players, better than scraping a win and continuing with what we have.

1 quality CB, 1 LB and 2 CM oh and a RB a couple of wingers if we are to play 4-3-3 thT MIGHT

meh, Arsenal lost to Villa in their first game and than went on a incredible run. Not reading too much into this result given we will probably get 2 or 3 more players in

Scholes and Giggs are legends to me but they have played too long under Fergie. Its all about wing play and British 'blood and guts' players.

    Keep dreaming boy.

A centre half and a centre mid is all that will be signed. We do not need a whole new team ffs

I'm not sure I understand why anyone would meltdown, at least wait til January, sir Alex always said we are better suited for the second half of a season, I'm sure it'll be no different under LVG

Surprised at the bashing of the backs. As a team we didn't defend very well, but the back 3 didn't exactly have a bad day at the office.

I thought it was more a case that the likes of Mata, Herrera, Fletcher, Young didn't turn up.

Adnan carried on from last decision, lots of threat and then disappoints through bad decisions.

Rooney is the biggest culprit. How many stray passes out wide, he had a minimum of 5 I felt all short to the intended player. Why did he take the fk, though it was good attempt mata should have taken it as it was on the left side. Mata had scored from a similar position vs southampton. If that goal had gone in the match would have been united's. Making him the captain might be a mistake. Aside from his goal worst performance, hernandez passing was better, that says how much is short passing has deteriorated.

As I've been saying all pre-season, as soon as we get down to business the squad weaknesses will show again.

Fletcher? Oh please, the guy is completely past it. I'm sorry about his illness, but we're Man Utd, we don't want to keep him here out of fecking pity. It's pathetic.

As for the rest of it, square pegs in round holes for half the team. Need more than a few players or we're in real trouble.

Should be likely there will be a few signings coming in this week. I'll probably get called out for this, but Fletcher simply isn't dynamic and paced enough to click with Herrera.

You're seriously asking me that question?

    Just take a look around.
Mate this thread adds 4 pages the second I finish reading 1. You don't expect me to read every comment, do you?

All that's been said in this thread is that without major new signings, we're going nowhere near top 4 and with this current squad we may be looking at a finish worse than 7th. You're an idiot if you believe any of that is wrong.

The players all seemed out of position at times. They never really got a hang of the game. Complete lack of awareness by some players like Young, Fletcher, Fellaini at times. They lost the ball under minimal pressure. Our DMs didn't do well enough to cover the ground in front of them, let alone supporting the defenders. This cost us the game.

Didn't expect that.We still are making the same mistakes as last season, it annoys me when we get a player in a central area in the last 3rd with his back to goal and instead of turning continually play it back or out wide.We have the forward players who can take defenders on, it must be so easy to defend against our predictable forward play.
Our injury list is becoming a joke too who else gets as many injuries as us pre season, it's becoming laughable.

You need to calm the feck down mate. I just said it was weird that's all and nothing more. I can't speak for the mods but with your attitude it might be hard to get promoted soon.
what was wrong with my attitude? did i call u names mate? if i got u wrong then fair enough and soz. and i don't really care about promotion mate.

    as for the game

i think the back 3 can hold there heads up and did well especially jones he was a monster.
the rest was pretty bad and fletch's legs have gone so hopefully we can get a new mf player but overall im not reading too much into the 1st game as all the drama and build up this week has probably drained the lads a bit.

In their defence, the performance was a massive let down. The fans didn't deserve that after last season.
There is no defense mate, I was still inside St James Park at the final whisttle when we were 5-0 down and these people do it every single week, it's not support it's like it's a chore to be there

Herrera if anything was the only one to play well. Mata was invisible and Young made a costly mistake for their second.

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the transfer window has been woeful. Poor planning has lead to a very slow decline, then when Fergie left is became a drastic decline. Only way to solve that is to spunk about £120m.

Hopefully this will spur Woody et al on to get some signings done abit quicker. (At least 3 top players needed)

Anyone who can't see they are desperately needed is a bit deluded.

Also as a side note, please stop tarring the "noobs" with the same brush, some of you "promoted, higher stature, etlist, (insert adjective here)", are just as bad.

Not the best performance, hopefully things will get better. At the moment it feels as though the system confuses the players and they aren't particularly sure where the goal are supposed to come from. Its a very middle heavy formation that relies on us going through teams there and against the very organised unit that Swansea put out we didn't seem to have an idea of what we're meant to be doing. Our wide play was a disaster until janu came on which also lead to its on defensive problems. having young at left fullback turns him instantly into a defensive player. our front 3 couldn't seem to get any supply and the supply they did get they did nothing with it.

Our defending isn't looking all too positive. Once we have center backs facing up to tricky wingers we are going to be in trouble. we changed shape in the second half which was positive to see as it means van gaal isn't one to stubbornly stick to something that isn't working, although we still couldn't get anything going after that. I did like the intensity we started tge secon half with, proper united level stuff although it seemed the goal knocked the stuffing right out of us.

we need to and I believe we'll be better in games to come. we have to do much more with the ball when we have that much of it. we need to get some solid wide play going as that's important in terms of breaking teams down.

so many under performers that I don't know where to start.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "It is very disappointing that we have lost our first home match. We didn't reach the level we can play at. That is disappointing because we have done it much better and when you cannot do it in your first home match that is disappointing, especially for the fans.
"We were very nervous in first half, made the wrong choices and that is a pity. In the second half we never played as a team, therefore, I'm responsible.
"We had more chances than Swansea but that shall say nothing about the result. It is the goals that count. I thought we would win [at 1-1] but because we are not playing as a team in the second half we made the wrong decisions going forward.
"My players did their utmost best, which I said in the dressing room, but you also need to play as a team and reach your level

Not good from the lads today, but lets not go into panic mode, we had about 8 players out, with about 4 of those players starting if they were fit and significantly improving our starting XI.

Question is, what does Van Gaal do next game? Does he continue with a 3-5-2, or does he keep the 4-2-3-1 we played in the second half?

Not surprised at all.. Our defence isn't even THAT bad, they just don't have support from anybody else.. Fletcher is poor and our wingbacks/fullbacks can't defend. We need two CM's and a CB, all of which need to be world class, with a fully fit squad and a few signing things look completely different.

    De Gea

    Rafael - Hummels - Evans - Shaw

    Khedira

    Herrera - Vidal

    Januzaj - RVP/Rooney - Nani

Dear god. No pace, No accuracy and No fighting spirit. We need signings, but that won't be enough. The players obviously need to be reminded that it is an honor to play for this club, and that their best effort is the right way to pay respect.
