Did anyone watch the Rooney interview before the match on Sunday?

Overall, it was a good interview. But one thing made me worry. He said, when questioned on 'you must feel a lot of the pressure has lifted after that first win', something along the lines of: "Yes, definitely. The whole team is a lot more relaxed/calm in training now".

Now you can take that as a positive or negative, but at the time I felt it was negative. That pressure was needed, it's still needed. A 4-0 win to QPR after 3 awful results should not have you relaxed, you should be feeling that pressure up until the end of the season. We're a long way from the top of that table with the easier games we've had (Swansea, Burnley, Sunderland, Leicester, QPR). You should feel that fire right under your ass.
Difficult to say, you can look at it both ways, either as the pressure enabling us to perform better or the same pressure crippling us and making us fall apart.. Don't know which one it is for us.

I can only agree with LVG said earlier in the season, use our brains on the pitch, not keep going gung-ho, slow it down, and keep possession, that'll help our defence immensely.

Can't agree with the dire predictions some are making, our defence will be significantly better for this game. Shaw would be an instant upgrade over Rojo at left back and Rojo should be an improvement over blackett, add that to the fact anyone including a returning smaling is better than a horribly out of form Evans.

A week of training against the likes of mata, rvp, Rooney and Falcao should prepare the defenders well for whatever West ham can throw at us, Lvg too must hv been furious after sunday, all this leads me to believe that come match day we'll be well prepared.

    2-0 United

There is absolutely no way Falcao will not score if he starts. Quote me on that.

If that team doesn't beat West Ham we may as well give up
However, I think Mata will be on the bench again.

I know Rooney will be played over Januzaj, but hasn't LVG said he will only use Rooney as an AM? That Falcao and RVP were better strikers, and that Mata he preferred further forward, so perhaps Mata & Falcao up top, with Rooney's defensive shift being invaluable to the midfield.

EDIT: Also, I'd rather Rojo didn't start, I rate Jones as well..

    Swap for Evans/Rojo then..
Evans is defs out too - he had a cast on after his injury against Leicester. Gonna have to be Rojo, which doesn't fill me with much confidence. And if either Rojo/Smalling gets injured then we're pretty screwed.

    Is Keane on loan?

Bench RVP and Blind, and give some balance to this team, and play players in their right positions. Pace and power yith Adnan Falcao and Di Maria

We have to try this system

The diamond is very good ofensively but weak defensively, this formation should be the right

I think we may win, but our strikers now are fairly slow and non physical so I don't see how it is a good preparation for West Ham. I also don't think our defending will be so much better, but I do think at home at Old Trafford we should be able to out play them easier since it is also a larger pitch and West Ham are also often poor away from home.

The biggest problem last weekend was stupid individual errors. Rojo had a made at left back and Blackett was bullied and let them through time and time again. Think it'll be a huge improvement having Shaw at fullback and rojo in the middle, but we'll see. Personally think it'll be a comfortable win, we cut through Leicester effortlessly, same with QPR.

I don't think there is a more physical team than West Ham right now bar maybe Man City.

Song, Sakho, Valencia, Kouyate, Reid, Tomkins etc all physical beasts.

I've watched West Ham against Palace, Tottenham and Liverpool this season and there's no way you'll batter them like you did QPR. There's a distinct change in their playing style and they have quality all over the pitch.
    Tomkins a physical beast?

Shaw, Smalling and Mata in for Blackett, Evans and Van Persie please.
Not much else we can do in regards to Evans and Blackett, completely agree about Mata as well. I think this is our first 3pm kick-off as well.

Based on what we have available this is team we should should play in a 4-2-3-1 formation imo.

So Smalling is injured again I guess, that means Thorpe to get a game or Blind moves back to CB and Fletcher starts. Both of these options doesn't fill me with confidence. Hopefully we can score more than concede.

When was the last time we had two left footed CBs starting?

Defence is going to get mullered, what's our record for most goals against in a season? we are going to smash it.

    Everton and chelsea soon also.

    Who said smalling is out?
Chris Smalling has picked up a thigh injury in training & could be out for the West Ham game. [mail]
Dunno how reliable that info is though, but it's all I could find.

One thing is for sure, we can't have a formation were Herrera is so much out on the wing and we can't play with Rooney, Falcao and RvP at the same time. Then we will be run over in midfield just like last weekend. I'm also glad that we are forced to put Shaw in and Rojo to his best position as a central defender. Blackett has done well, but it's to early for him to have a long run in the side and Rojo is much, much better.

Only thing that can take a win away from us this weekend is poor tactics (as last)

I thought although we fell to pieces the team just hasnt had chance to gel together just yet...

I think with time we will become more of a cohesive unit. We must be patient, and the results will come :)

    My team for West Ham:

    De Gea

    Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Herrera Di Maria
    Rooney
    Falcao Van Persie
Rojo looked a bit uncomfortable with the pace of the Leicester winger but he impressed me massively against QPR. I think Shaw is more of a natural left wing back and thus, should be able to get up and down the wings supporting the attacks...

I think if falcaos effort had gone in and that ridiculous decision by the referee hadnt occurred we would be delighted with todays result and that we had got 2 wins on the bounce and had overtaken liverpool.

The fact is that when we concede, part of the team seems to panic and revert back to how we played under Moyes, we lack confidence.

With every win we will gain more confidence and move further away from the Moyes era.
Excellent post. And I hope you are right.

We only live around the corner
With Jones, Smalling, Evans and blackett all out for this game. Who will we see as the centreback pairing? I really hope we do not see Blind pushed back in the defence, I don't think I can bare fletcher playing that holding role ever again.

I hope Tom Thorpe gets the much deserved call up, he has proven for the U21's he is a great player. I am hoping us being at home gives us a bit more of an advantage and we need to defend alot less.
