Martial has been probably the standout in preseason so if he's not starting today and wasn't rested against Real I'd be pissed along with everyone else can see the guy is trying hard to make it here.
Didn't you hear? Martial was shit to average in pre season, he is being wanked, Rashford the consistent outperforms him everytime.

Meanwhile in reality land Martial's assists + goals > Lingard and Rashford combined. But we have to be preoccupied making things up in order to justify Mourinho constant idiotic selections and benching of certain players.

It's all about being top red and all that. This place can be asinine at times.

Thought it was a known fact that he hates us with a passion, actively going out of his way to prevent us from winning the game.

    No, I'm not paranoid :nervous:
We got screwed at the bridge a few times but maybe someone else knows more about this?

Classical case of selective memory. More effective than Rashford? The guy who was the sole reason we made it to the EL final? Did you miss his goals and assists at the later stages of the tournament?
Martial's goals + assists > Rashford and Lingard combined last season despite Mourinho cuddling the latter 2 while treating the former quite unfairly. But go on we have a narrative to keep.

Who says he was shit and Rashford outpreformed him? How about being less obsessed and hope whoever plays, we play well and take 3 points?

Loving the positive language I've seen from Mourinho today.

Did have this down as a draw but seems like he's getting the bit between his teeth.

    United win!

I will aspire to be more optimistic with regards to our results this season. Maybe a tight 2-1 to kick it off.

Why do people care so much about Martial so much? He hasn't even done anything to deserve a starting spot yet...
Indeed. Martial and Rooney were 2 players who had their fanboys.
    Rooney deserved, for obvious reasons.
Martial on the other hand, had a great first season and a dreadful second season.

In preseason I thought he was better than Lingard, yet he starts.
    I agree with this.

I think Jose's problem is that he wants players to run through brick walls for him. He wants players who will graft in training AND in the match.
Lingard/Fellaini fit this description, while Martial on the other hand does not fit this description.

IMO, if Jose does not plan to use him much, he should loan him out to a team where he can gain experience and improve his skills. Next season, Martial could come back an even better player, making it impossible for Jose to leave him out. At Ajax for example, he'd improve his technical ability, will probably be the player of the year in that league and will return brimming with confidence.

Those pre-match nerves are starting to bubble up now and I LOVE IT, so stoked to get the season started! I don't have particularly high hopes for the season for the first time in...ever probably, but I can't wait to get in to it again.

    I said what I said.
Lingard played better in more games in pre-season than Martial, especially in the beginning.

Yes he had flashes of brilliance, but his problem is consistency over the course of a match.

I haven't insulted him, or said he was terrible.
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. I wouldn't agree with that and would actually say the team looked a million times better when Martial was up top with Lukaku. Everything just seemed to work better so really for me I'd start him over Miki although I'd be tempted to drop Herrera and stick Miki in there which I know is blasphemy considering how good Herrera was.

    The team I would pick:

    ----------------DDG----------------
    Valencia--Bailly-Lindelof--Darmian
    -----------Matic----Pogba----------
    Mata-------Mkhitarian------Martial
    ---------------Lukaku--------------

Rashford on for one of the three behind Lukaku, if needed.

    What I think we'll see:

    -------------------DDG-------------------
    Valencia-----Bailly----Jones----Darmian
    ---------Herrera---Matic---Pogba--------
    -Mkhitarian--------------------Rashford--
    ------------------Lukaku-----------------

    DDG
    Valencia Bailley Smalling Mitchell
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Rashford Martial
    Lukaku

I would love to see this for pace and goals. Lots of youthfulness in this line up. But think we will get Lingard and Darmian chocking the life out of our left hand side.

    On top of the league
I'm not going to settle with a draw today. I'm sorry but I completely had it with mediocre expectations and results. Mourinho better have his men fired up for this one. We're playing at OLD TRAFFORD for god's sake! We should never ever expect anything but a win here, no matter what team we're playing. Just go out there and get the job done. Not being maximum prepared for a season start is inexcusable. We need to be on top from day one now that the competition is becoming harder than ever. There will be no second chance of reaching the CL. This year we're going for the league, no way of getting around that and a TOP 4 spot MINIMUM REQUIREMENT!!!!!

    My wishes are...

A clean sheet for Lindelof's confidence!
    A goal for Lukaku's confidence!

I think we have much better potential with Martial in the team, and I expect him to lock down a place in the first XI on the left hand side, especially with the World Cup next year.
All he needs is one chance and he can carve through a defence like butter, but more often than not, that one chance comes after 4 or 5 occasions where he got it wrong previously.
It's unfair to expect him to get it right every time, but I certainly expect him to have a higher success rate - that's what the world class players do.

Now when he's fronting up against a defender, I hope he does something special, compare that with a Hazard/Bale/Ribery/Neymar etc where you're surprised if they don't do something special, that's the difference for me, he needs to be more consistent, he has the ability.

This is a chance to put down an early marker and an indication that we're serious this season. None of the title contenders so far have done anything too convincing, so a big win would do very nicely.

It will be interesting to see whether we go with 3 or 4 at the back as it could be a sign of whats to come for the rest of the season. Particularly if we go with 3 as we don't have the player for the left wing back yet.

Don't see Martial starting as Mourinho doesn't seem to rate him despite him being the only player that can beat a man in the squad.

Like last season i don't expect many goals.

This place has become MartialCafe . True he is probably our 2nd or 3rd most talented player but the amount of discussion on it would make someone who doesn't watch our games feel that we continuously win 4-0s and 5-0s with him but drop points without him. Its insane!
Its the reason I stay away from redcafe now a days.

Martial scored and assisted in bulk against lowly teams and in games that didn't have much impact on our season.

    And talking about narratives..
Yes!! Manager doesn't want to start a player who according to your words is brilliant and was better than most our attackers last season!! Yes the manager has personal vandetta against Martial. Maybe Mourinho is racist. But then he plays Rahsford, bought Lukaku and Pogba. Maybe he just hates French players. Oh wait he bought Pogba for world record fee. Maybe he doesn't trust young players. Oh wait, he does according to you. He cuddles Rashford doesn't he? Maybe he made his mind up about Martial and doesnt give him chances. Mourinho can be like that, can't he? But then Martial started as many games as Lingard and Mourinho gave both Mata and Mkhi second chances despite having sold one of them at his previous club!! What could it possibly be?!! Surely not that Martial was shit last season. Surely not that he kept losing the ball over and over again and was nonexistent in a lot of games he started or came on as substitute. Surely not! The manager probably wants to be sacked and doesn't want to win any trophies. What else could explain him not playing the most potent attacker he has at his disposal?!

You lot need to stop. Your defense of a player, who really needs to perform and earn his spot in starting line up, is bordering on crazy now. Your excuses make no sense! "The manager doesn't like him despite him being crazy good and having the potential to win us the title" give me a break! Let's hope Martial doesn't harbor same feelings of being treated unfairly and know he has to step up his game. For his own sake.

I've bucked the trend and predicted a lineup based on a back three.

Bold strategy, will it pay off?
