Thought tonight might be the first time since the season opener, where we manage to score more than one goal. Then I saw the line-up.

Don't see the point in playing Mata. If you're going to play Lingard may as well play him as the #10, can press similarly to Pereira. Would have had Greenwood as straight swap for James. Can only guess he wanted more experience in side, to cover for experimenting with Garner and Williams.

Very interested to see how Garner and McTominay get on together as I see that as our future midfield. And Williams seems well suited to a wingback role, more so than Shaw.

Hadn't expected to see the 3-4-3 again so soon, perhaps it is a switch away from 4-2-3-1. Guess the coaches took the international time to take stock and try something else to turn results around.

    Rather see Greenwood over Lingard.

Nice to see Maguire in as Captain. Hopefully that's here to stay now.

Its both a great day and potentially a bad day for Garner. Hopefully more of a great day and Mata + Lingard play like they arent the newest members to the squad, but given their form so far this season I expect them to waste his passes

Interesting line-up, I didn't realize Lingard would be back so soon, typical he'd be the one that got back quickest. Martial getting the start probably makes sense, get an hour into his legs. Glad to see Garner getting a chance as well and it looks like Ole is sticking with 3-5-2 which I'm also glad to see.

I think Mata in this formation is going to be more effective than he is as a 10 or RW in 4231. Im unable to express myself in English enough but the way I see it is that: with 3421, he is going to be one of 2 AM and makes the same runs as Andreas made to spaces and channels. He is not that effective outside the penalty area nowadays for some obvious reasons but when the WBs can provide width and have a good infield passes especially near or inside penalty area then I believe Mata does create more dangerous situation.

It is all thought but the positive changes from new formation make me hope for another good team play today.

Great to see Martial back in the starting lineup and Williams and Garner earning a start.

Exciting lineup all things considered. Lingard is due a good performance - got a feeling he'll grab a goal tonight.

I think it has potential to be honest. It seems like a formation that can utilize the strengths that we have and protect us in other areas too. I'm intrigued to see if it works tonight.
It worked well against our 4-3-3 because you could match up to our formation. Your back three vs our front three, your WB's vs our full backs, your midfield three vs ours & our back two vs your front two.

If you win the midfield battle then it's a handy formation.

Maybe it's the Conte first season at Chelsea moment for us with 3 at the back? I can see it working out.

Don't like the formation if it is a 5-3-2.
3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2. Williams and AWB on the edges will keep the ball towards the center, for the few times Partizan can break through McT/Garner and press Maguire, DeGea, and Co. This will give also Ole five attacking options in the middle offensively. Mata can distribute the ball (and he can do that, if nothing else) to Martial and Lingard, who play a bit wide, or he can run in for service from any of the four midfielders.

I see us holding the ball 75-80% of the game at worst.

This has nothing to do with Ole in/out but Scholes really changed his tune.

    Bollocking about fluently.

If the remaining squad manages to play around Mata and Lingard - involving them as little as possible - we might actually get a few chances with this lineup. If these are heavily involved though and history is anything to go by - they'll probably do a better job at breaking up our attack than the opposition defenders could ever hope for. I hope they prove me wrong of course - really do :)

Damning stats on the screen. Our best results have been when we don't have the ball.

Makes total sense though. Only Martial and Pogba are actually good on the ball and can do something with it.

All our other players are better without the ball or need space (which you usually get when you dont have the ball) to do what they want to do. Rashford and James can be very good players but are at their best running after a deep ball and using their speed.

Excited for James Garner. I hope we play well enough to let him express himself, if we're struggling it's no place for an 18 year old.
