Surprisingly pessimistic predictions in the vote.
Is it really that bad? Coming on the back of a loss, losing our best player for months, playing away against a team we've already lost to this calendar year. I was expecting far worse.

I have a sneaky feeling we'll see Darmain move to left back and Valencia at right back.

I'm quite sure that van Gaal will not play a right footed defender at left back. If he's so keen to play a left footed defender at left centre back, I can't see him doing that.

I think the back 4 will be Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind although I would just play Rojo at left back and keep the Smalling/Blind partnership.

Can/has Darmian played left back? A right footer in left back is rarely a good idea.
Yeah he played LB for torino many times. Shaw was quite direct in his approach. he frequently burst into the half space left by Depay (when depay was hugging the touchline). I think this would be even easier for a right footer. On the defensive side of things i imagine it would be easier for Darmian to contend with the pace of Mane than Blind. But as its mentioned above its more likely that van gaal will play a left footed LB.

After the international break, followd by two tough games, I just hope that Van Gaal will starts one or two fresh players in the team.

Rojo will be in the starting XI for sure, but I would like to see also Valencia playing instead of Darmian.... Ok ok I know that we can't touch him cause he's just superb since he came, but I tought that he's less mobile since the Pool game, and maybe tiring a bit... On the other way, Valencia just looked awful whenever he played, that's because the match rythm... Paradoxal ya know.

In order to make things happens, I would also like to have Young on the wind with Depay following their good game midweek.

My big issue will be through the middle. I would like to rest Basti, and play Carrick + Morgan, but when they played against Newcastle, they were just not inspired, not mobile, very solid, but slowing the tempo....

It can be the good solution against a fresh S'ton team, who would like to kick their season with a win over us. Maybe playing them would give us a good base, solid one, in a tough away game, making us difficult to beat.

I'm just afraid that we'll be again horrible to watch, slow, predictable. Just hope that our forward can make the difference, as we begin to create more and more chances in games than the beginning of the season.

If they had any respect they'd let this match be 2-3 to the away team.

The question for me is, does LvG consider Mané too hot to handle for the likes of Blind and Rojo? If so I think he could switch Darmain to that side this game.

We need to start trying different approaches because what LVG has been doing is obviously not going to work.

    -------------------Martial-------------------
    ----------------------------------------------
    Depay-------------Mata--------------Young
    ----------------------------------------------
    ------------Carrick----Morgan--------------
    ----------------------------------------------
    Darmian----------------------------Valencia
    --------------Rojo----Smalling--------------
    ----------------------------------------------
    -------------------De Gea-------------------

I'm tired of seeing Mata out wide, it's not his natural position. Better to see him as a 10 and have a player like Young on the wing who has some explosiveness.

Also, I'd prefer Valencia to Blind in the back line this week. Valencia isn't a natural defender obviously but I feel that his speed and physicality can make up for it, plus he can do a job going forward.

We have to be able to squeeze 3 points out of tough away matches like this one if we're gonna do anything worthwhile this season.

Young played on the right last game and Mata in the middle. Young was gash IMO.

Agree on Mata, but why not keep blind cb ahead of Rojo? Smalling/Blind has been a good partnership.

Is Rooney back for this game does anyone know?

    @worldinmotion66

That's a horrible team, Darmian is new and performing well at RB, why put him at LB? I think Schwein may need a rest too, but from their performances Memphis looks more tired to me. I'd not want to see 3 deep midfield positions against Southampton either.
He played left back all last season for Torino, he's just as comfortable there. It's a personal choice of Valencia over Rojo, I just think I'd trust Valencia slightly more. I only moved to 3 deeper midfielders as it would get the best out of Carrick and Herrera. It also allows Schneiderlin to press with the knowledge that Carrick is protecting the back four, and it also draws Southampton out so that there is space to counter attack.

I'm not expecting us to do any of this, mind. We'll keep the same formation and play the same rigid possession football. And we'll most likely lose, or at best struggle to break them down.

Is Darmian really a better option at LB over Blind/Rojo? I know he plays there but isn't he suited for RB? This could cripple 3 positions instead of 1.
    I'd go for

    Rojo - Blind - Smalling - Darmian
    or
    Bind - Rojo - Smalling - Darmian.

I agree with the rest of the lineup. Let's see if LVG is on the same page.

Edit: Just saw an LVG quote from his press conference.
"In Blind, Rojo and Young we have good replacements (for Luke Shaw)"

He'll probably put Young at LB, Fellaini up top with Mata on the RW and Martial on the bench.

This time we got the Schneiderlin so perhaps we should dominate in the middle but results are really a variable under Louis van Gaal. We need to win this and start building the consistency required to challenge for the title.

Jones is a better CB than Blind and Blind is a better LB than Rojo. The back four should be:

    Blind--Jones--Smalling--Darmian

Up until now, Darmian has sat back whilst Shaw has attacked. I think that tactic is going to be switched so that Blind's lack of pace doesn't get exposed (so Blind stays back and Darmian gets forward).

If Tuesday is anything to go by, Young will play on the left and Memphis on the right. The former is much better at giving protection to his fullback. I don't think it was a coincidence that that's how they played in the second half against PSV.

With Rooney back and Martial in form, it wouldn't surprise me to see Mata dropped. Schweinsteiger needs a rest, too.

    --------Martial
    --Young Rooney Memphis
    ----Schneid Carrick
    -Blind Jones Smalling Darmian
    --------De Gea

The three things I want to see are Martial up front, Rooney in the hole, and Schneiderlin starting.

Facing Southhampton away is always a tough game.

Negative I know, but I'm almost not expecting anything from this game. Hardly even excited. Miss the times when it would hardly matter rather we were home or away. You know we'd turn up. With this team, you just don't know rather we'll lose 2-0 or win 0-1.

Well, I've always felt that Blind started the season at CB just out of necessity because we failed to sign a new top CB. If there was a weak link in our regular back line of Shaw, Blind, Smalling and Darmian it was definitely Blind.

With Shaw gone now we're losing a defender who was strong, fast and good going forward, so the best way to replace that for now in my mind is bringing in Valencia, who isn't as good defensively but does give us the speed, physicality and offensive options that Shaw provided. Darmian will be just as good on the left side as he has been on the right, and with Rojo we'd be gaining size and strength over Blind in the middle.

To be honest I'm not sure I really see how Blind fits into our lineup long-term. I think he's good cover at LB and CB but probably not good enough to be starter for a defensive starter for a club like United. Maybe he could do well in a defensive midfielder position alongside Schneiderlin long-term?

Let us win this one FFS. Seems like ages since we beat a proper team away from home.

Young at LB. Was good last year and will keep him away from the right thank god.

Rooney as a no.10 with Martial up top. Mata as impact sub with Fellaini.

This is what I would like to see on Sunday

Rojo at left back to not break up the Smalling - Blind partnership.
Drop Mata and play Rooney as a false nine.

Embargoed part of the LVG presser.

Is Young the best Shaw replacement, in terms of pace?
I’ve said it’s Young, Blind and Rojo and you are asking only about 1 player. I can’t answer that question.

How much have Utd missed Rooney? Hasn’t scored in 10games in the Premier League?
He scored agasint Brugge. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the Premier League or the Champions league. It doesn’t matter who is scoring but we have to score more, because when you are so dominant as we are in so many matches you have to win these games.
He has a range of scoring goals, like Mata,Memphis,Martial and Fellaini (Yes he said Fellaini!). In my memory Rooney has scored a lot and is also nearly the record goal scorer of the Premier League.

Did Luke Shaw have a 2nd operation today?
It was to close the stiches because the pressure was too high, that’s why an immediate operation was needed and because opening of the leg you need to close it also. That’s not an operation but it’s a minor operation. It wasn’t done today but will be done in Manchester. Was waiting for the pressure to drop for Luke to be able to fly. He will go to a private clinic.

Would you expect to see him play again this season?
I am not a doctor. Also the doctor cannot say anything about that. Doctor said it will take at least 6months. Depends on the circumstances.

From your experience as a manager, when a player suffers a horrific injury like Shaw has, can it make the dressing room tighter?
It could be. There was a question about this in Eindhoven about the mental influence about such an injury. I said I cannot prove and see in the heads of the players. But I have now read and like you can read in the papers, that some players have said that it had an influence. Maybe it shall have a positive influence in the dressing room. But when you see us playing, the spirit that we have I don’t have any doubt.
