This is the kind of game United need to be winning to show they are genuine title contenders this season. Watford had a go against us so I see no reason why they won't/shouldn't do the same against you.

Deeney and Ighalo tend to pin themselves right up to the defensive line for most goal kicks.. They work well together and could be a handful. This Watford team, on their day, is fluid and energetic.. the kind of team that could spring a surprise on United recently.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised with any result here.. But I'm going to make a prediction of a Watford win.

It will be a tough game for sure. We're always bad (except against Everton) when we come back from international break. Watford have a good defense, especially at home.

I think that they will give us the possession and wait for us trying to break us on the counter or by set pieces.

If we try to play like we did recently, and I mean with the same players we're dead. We need to put players on the pitch able to beat mens and bring something.

Yeah can't believe we've only won 2 out of 2 games after the international break, beating both Merseyside clubs by the small margin of 6-1. We should be doing much better.

So in theory we should have more international breaks? Then make sure we either play Liverpool or Everton after them?

Okay... you say that but then put Felliani in the #10 who we all know that he's not a guy who can beat guy left, right & centre. In the air yes but on the ground playing possession football? not his strength im honest with you... Also lacks the vision to carry out a decent ball to the striker. When Felliani's on, the style of play is changed and is turned to long balls. Playing possession football with Felliani in the hole will just not work. Either Herrera or Mata needs to be in that position, both are mobile, able to keep possession of the ball , always looking for space and never stationed and can carry decent pass. I get it, Watford is likely to sit back and look for the counter like any other team United face but thats what the central defensive midfielder is used for which mostly every team has in there team, too protect the back four and break down the play. United have those choices with either Carrick or Schneiderlin. Having Herrera & Schweinsteiger in the midfield together will defiantly catch united out on the counter because both are not really defensive minded.

Definitely think Rojo will be rested. He played 2 full games for Argentina and last time LvG left him and Romero out completely after the international break. We can't afford to lose any more players so I am not particularly against it either. We will have most of the ball anyway and our full back play has been one of the main factors to our impotency up front IMO so since we don't have Shaw or Valencia, we need to have Young in one of the full back positions especially in games where we won't have to do much defending. So instead of him up front, I would either play Memphis or Schneiderlin with Herrera moving up.

Watford are pretty good defensively. Breaking them down might be tough.

With Martial looking out of the match, Rooney to score a brace :)
That exactly what was being said about Falcao last year, from February onwards. And he went on to score...zero.
So, in the same spirt - Rooney to score 3 and DDG to score 2 :p

And doing it without Martial could be even tougher.
Still, we have Lingard in good form, so here's hoping.
All we need to do is score 1 goal (I think), to win the game...which is doable.

Yeah, who needs Messi, we've got Jesse. Freddy got fingered, we got Lingard. Etc.

Scary how similarly I was thinking. I would definitely have Fellaini and Herrara in as they both have a point to prove and both tend to turn up whether home or away. I feel some of our players are too timid in away games. I would go one step further and take Mata out or put him number 10, I don't think we can afford to have him bullied out on the wing. Maybe another chance for Memphis?

    1-1.

Can't see United keeping another clean sheet, especially against a crowd like Watfords. And I can't see United having the fire power to score any more than one.

I know everyone loves to have a dig at us but we'll win 2/3-0, I know they're in a nice position because they play some decent risky football but Watford are really shit and they'll probably finish just outside the relegation places.

If Martial is out I'd actually like to see us play something like the below, it's going to be a tricky away game where chances will be at a premium against a team who will be happy to sit back and let us have all the possession whilst trying to catch us on the counter.

This would be similar to the system we saw in the second part of last season, with Fellaini and Herrera operating in the pockets between the fullbacks and wide forwards. Central defenders will be tempted to pull out to pick them up which should create more space for Rooney to work with. This could also be the sort of game where having Fellaini's presence in both boxes during set pieces will be a massive help.

We don't have to play 'route one' or 'hoof-ball' with him in the side, but we can be more direct.

    Darmian-------------------Smalling------------Blind-------------------------Rojo
    ------------------------------------Schneiderlin---------------------------------
    ------------------------------Herrera----------Fellaini---------------------------
    -------Mata---------------------------Rooney-------------------------Lingard/Young----

The only risk is I guess is playing with one defensive midfielder away from home against a side that are likely to play with two front men that can be a handful. Against sides like this though, we should be thinking about what we need to do to win the game rather than spending too much time worrying about what we need to do to stop Watford from winning. I know that's not LVG's style though.

Merson has predicted another 1-1. Doesn't he get bored of predicting 1-1 draw for us in almost all the matches.

Going to be a much tougher game than many think in my opinion. Some of our players have had quite stressful weeks. All the players will have obviously felt the tragedy of the past week but Schneiderlin, Martial, Bastian, Blind, Depay, De Gea and Mata have all had serious threats at their matches. Only they know how they will deal with but you couldn't blame them if their mind isn't 100% focused on this match. Add the usual international break hangover to that and this is a real test.

I honestly don't care if this is the most boring of games ever under van Gaal, if we get 3 points, it will be massive.

It's fair enough in this one I think. Our away form isn't the best and they're a decent side who will be keen to impress.

I think it has more to do with Merson having no clue how we will play. So he plays it safe with a 1-1 draw for almost every match

Six players out and not a recognised forward is fit - now do you see why you needed to buy a striker LVG?! I thought we were going to win this one but looks like we are going to be fielded a B team

The problem isn't the amount of strikers. Rooney, Martial and Wilson is enough depth for a team who only uses one striker. It's just that two got injured and one isn't match fit. It happens and we'll just have to deal with it.

The problem is a lack of quality up front.
