    Why?

Started the last game, was average Carrick is fresh.....

If he does it and is thinking about Carroll it will be a massive step back from Mourinho

Play our football and we blow them away and their fricking bubbles
He'll Take Herrera's spot not Carrick's purely to give Ander a rest I reckon

It would be an awful decision to do so with a cup game coming up where we can rest players
Don't get me wrong I want Pogba, Herrera and Carrick to start I just wonder if they have a full 90 in them as this is our third game in 7 days

Im hoping if he rests Herrera he plays Carrick, Pogba and Mata

Fellaini is just a weak link in the chain and he did play an hour or so in the last game

Maybe a Bastian appearance.... he can certainly use the ball better than Fellaini but Bastian and Carrick together would be ultra slow

Just based on what Mourinho said in his presser about fellaini and that he showed the fans he is important apparently. plus Ander and Pogba literally went to the end of yesterday's match on fumes. I think one of em will be rested.

Bear in mind I hope I'm wrong and pogba and Herrera wake up today fresh as a morning daisy

I don't think anyone will be rested for this one. The rest and rotation will come against Reading and Hull. It will be 13 days in-between the west ham and liverpool league matches. The 2 cup matches are the perfect opportunity to give guys some rest without it possibly affecting us in the league.

The problem is not with the quality of the opponent, but that we had to bring out everything this game and travel to London and play the game in less than 48hours. West Ham traveled much less and have home advantage this game. For a team who is well versed in physical and scraps football, the little advantage in fitness level in this kind of fixture can prove to be huge.
Respectably disagree. We had 2 home fixtures over Christmas. West Ham will be more tired imo plus we have more quality.

5 straight wins, haven't lost in 10 games and still in 6th. The top 6 are incredibly consistent this year which means that any fixture outside the top group HAS to be a win. Anything else and top 4 will become too difficult. Making for a great season though.
We should be closer to the Top 4 by the end of round 20.

Spurs vs Chelsea. Can see Spurs dropping points.
Arsenal at Bournemouth. Bournemouth is always hard at home.
City vs Burnley. Should go to City but had less than 44 hours to prepare. Burnley at home also have a better home record than we do.

So I can see points dropping for the teams above ours.

West Ham have been poor at home so we have a chance.

Burnley are away to City and are winless till now. City should win it. Spurs and Arsenal can certainly drop points.

One of the toughest away game of the season and a veryyyy important game in terms of points.

We won 5 in a row when our rivals are doing the same. We have to win it before Spurs are playing Chelsea and before we play the dippers in 10 days.

We have to win this, especially before a cup game when we'll rest a lot of our players

I'm never confident when we play WH. Payet can score from nowhere, they are very good at set pieces, and when they want to put pressure, they've got strong bodies that can hurt us. Let's hope that we win this one.

Last year they denied us the fourth place during a terrible game, just let's make sure that we put it right

    ------------------------------------De Gea--------------------------------------
    Valencia-------------------Jones--------Rojo/Smalling---------Rojo/Darmian
    ------------------------------------Carrick--------------------------------------
    Mata-----------------------Herrera------Pogba-------------------------Lingard
    --------------------------------------Ibra-----------------------------------------

I would've played Mkhi and Martial but I'm not sure if they can after having played so well 2 days ago. Just hope that Pogba-Herrera-Ibra won't be too tired for this one

Just want to pause to say how nice it is to be looking forward to a match again, instead of feeling like it's a duty to watch. Much more important than finishing fourth.

Didn't even realise that the game was today...I hope we give them a right thrashing after they literally begged for our players.

Hope Rashford and Martial score a brace. Any other player they tried to buy from us?

Finally positive feelings again before our games, good to get back some confidence something we missed in our previous 3 seasons.

is carrick guaranteed to return? If so, i'll be a lot more positive.

At times i felt fellaini/Herrera didn't communicate right. It felt like borough could get through the midfield way too easily at certain moments. I won't be too harsh on fellaini as he did ok last game. However, against a better side we need that 'carrick rock' cleaning up and dictating play.

Don't know what impact fatigue could have on today's game. I can't remember the last time a team won all their Christmas and new year fixtures.

It's not about home fixture at home. It's about recovery time between nearest games, and we had to burst the gut for the win vs Boro.

I had similar discussion with a deluded Tottenham fan considering their fixture. Of course he said his team had less rest vs Watford and the fixture is not too kind for them. I said since Watford had to play 2 game in 3 days fixture, they would play half ass in tougher one and conserve stamina for the easier. Look at what happened in Watford vs Tottenham game: Watford zombie walked almost the whole game and second best to anything. At time they like playing with a single defender line...

Back to this game. West Ham was only away to Leicester which is much closer to London than us so they had edge in fitness recovery.

With Blind being out the squad I don't think I like the prospect of either Darmian or (less likely) Rojo up against Michael Antonio. He's such a threat aerially and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Smalling remains in the back four.

Carrick in for Fellaini and the same front five, please.

How is Carrick going to play this one if he was too ill to be part of the squad just 2 days ago?

Especially as Rojo looks a much much stronger player at CB and he and Jones had forged a good partnership

Feel this will be very tough today - I hope we take our chances as I think we will concede

Two Cup Ties at Old Trafford against far weaker opposition in the next two games... This has to be given the priority and not just because it's 'the next game'. We should progress against Reading even with a much changed side, while against Hull it's a game over two legs which we should overcome even if we have a bit of a hiccup and don't win one of the games.

No Bailly, Blind, Rooney, Schweinsteiger, or Shaw.

Jose has been talking up Fellaini a lot, and I think he will play a part in this match. Hopefully it is not from the start though.

    de Gea
    Valencia Jones Rojo Darmian
    Herrera Carrick Pogba
    Mkhitaryan Ibrahimovic Martial
    ---
Romero; Smalling, Fosu-Mensah/Young; Fellaini, Mata, Lingard; Rashford

I think Jose will definitely want Fellaini, Mata, Lingard, and Rashford on the bench as they are our best available options to change the game. With Romero taking a slot, it's down to 2/3 of Smalling, TFM, and Young, and it has to be obvious that Smalling takes one of them. Hell, Smalling (or even Fellaini) has a strong possibility of starting this game as well.

For the time being (with the exception of possibly the Left Back position), I think that is our strongest first 11. Eventually, it won't be Jones + Rojo I am sure, and if Shaw/Blind can find form and a run of games they're our best LBs, but in this moment it is. Have to win this game, but it's our biggest banana skin for a while. West Ham can pull out a performance, even if their record at this stadium is pretty poor. They have played a little bit better the last few games, despite the loss to Leicester.

Still, going for another 2-1 win for us.

Hull outplayed West Ham at the London Stadium a few weeks ago. Arsenal were very ordinary and still defeated them 5-1. The bigger pitch makes it harder for them to defend as a unit and gaps appear everywhere in their back 4. As long as we deal with their set pieces and are clinical with our finishing, this should be a comfortable match for us.

If we start Ibra Mkhi and Martial we'll smash them.

Funny feeling we'll see at least one of Jesse, Rash or Mata though.

West Ham are the archetypal game-raisers - United being in town seems to do something to their fans and players. Though I'm feeling more than confident about this one, the London Stadium feels like neutral turf at the moment and so I don't expect anything like the kind of performance we usually see from West Ham against us.

If we defend set pieces diligently (and don't concede cheap fouls!) we'll create enough to score goals.

Looking at the table and nice to see that, at least for a few hours, we're snapping at City's heels. Didn't think City would dip in form until the CL starts again and I thought Arsenal would be the most likely candidates for dropping points and out of the top 4. Only saw the first half of the Liverpool v City game but I thought there wasn't much quality in the game, especially from City.

WH won't be, or usually isn't, easy for us so a win here would be great. Plus a result for Burnley:drool: and City might get very, very nervous:). I thought we were excellent against Boro and a win like that made me feel the old days are just around the corner.

On form and desire right now we should beat West Ham but I have a feeling they will do the usual and play us out of their skin like its their cup final, I'm expecting another wonder display by Randolph and Payet will show up again plus I see Jose fielding the likes of Lingard which really from my point of view is like being a man short for most of the game. Fellaini may even start so I think we will only take a point tonight but hope I'm wrong.

My Team choice; De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Blind, Carrick, Herrera, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Zlatan, Martial.

This season multiple teams are there to win 4-5 matches in a row between December end and beginning of Jaunary. Spurs, Liverpool,Chelsea and We have all won our last 4 league games. Liverpool and one of Spurs/Chelsea are going to win all 5 between December 2nd weekend and the last set of festive fixtures.
