Personally, I'd rather we focus on the league. We're not going to win the CL, whether we go out in the gorup stages or in the kockout phase is irrelevant for me personally. We should be beating Valencia (who look awful so far) but Juve will be a tough nut to crack. We've got to rotate, we ran Pogba and Luakaku into the gorund last season, no point having a squad if it's not going to be used and the younger players need opporutnities. If we're saying we have to play our strongest eleven to beat Young Boys then we have serious issues with the squad anyways. Top 4 is going to be a war this year, Chelsea and Arsenal look miles better than last year and Spurs have already beaten us at OT even though theyve lost their last 2. City and Liverpool already have a decent lead on us. I'd keep the big guns on the bench and bring them on early in the second half if we're struggling. Wolves will be a tough game, they have a very decent side, rather rest our best players for that.
Make Top 4 for CL only to throw away CL?

The most exciting part of the season is this time when we play in the CL. The excitement of the CL and midweek games is on a different level.

When we do badly in the league, but still keep ourselves competitive in the cups, the latter sort of becomes something to salvage our season as well. Either way, nobody expects us to win the CL, but when the likes of Roma or Monaco have progressed deep into the competition in recent years, backing ourselves to make the QFs atleast seems a decent target to set.

Lukaku will be going in hard for this. Don't think Young boys will be able to cope with his relentless strength and pace.

I'd tell Lukaku to show no mercy or remorse as he tears into each and every one them, a new one ;)

    de Gea
    Young--Bailly--Lindelof--Shaw
    Fred--Matic--Pogba
    Lingard--Lukaku--Rashford

subs: Grant, Jones, Pereira, McTominay, Mata, Sanchez, Martial

Hopefully minutes off the bench for Martial, Pereira and Mata.

A bit of info regarding Young Boys.

First of all, they play on artificial turf, that always deserves a mention, as it is an advantage.

Second, they are the type of team that is well-equipped to batter lesser sides (hence their domestic record), but are really not well suited to playing against sides better than them, with the reason for this being that they are far better going forward than at the back. Think of non-peak Arsenal under Wenger, well, that's the type of mentality they have.

They lost their highly-rated boss Adolf Hutter (pronounced Adolf Hitter - cannot make it up) over the summer. His replacement, Gerardo Seoane, has a grand total of nine months of senior coaching experience, having started his A-team managerial career at Luzern in January. He has done reasonably well so far, but the CL group stage will be his biggest test.

They made the group stage after beating Dinamo Zagreb 3:2 on aggregate. Dinamo, who are the worst they have been in years, lead the return leg 1:0 and were in control, but then self-combusted and conceded twice in three minutes to go out. Other than the two chances from which they scored, Young Boys created nothing.

Players to watch are Guillaume Hoarau (a poor man's Ibrahimovic), Miralem Sulejmani, Moumi Ngmaleu (who could both do job as wingers at sides such as Burnley and Huddersfield), Roger Assale and Kevin Mbabu. I expect Assale and Mbabu to move to better leagues - the former is a skillful and pacy striker, the latter is a right-back who is far better going forward than defending.

I will once again repeat my point about Young Boys not being equipped to face stronger teams. They are pretty mediocre at the back and are not that good at counter-attacking. The central midfield is also not very good and, if United try to play "the new way", which was first seen against Tottenham, they should have no problems winning this.
    Very informative post, thank you.

They do pose a threat it seems and I agree with others on here that we should not treat it like it like an easy league cup game. Best we go for as strong a team as possible and only rotate those with injury niggles.

    My preferred line-up would be:

    De Gea

    Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Young

    Fred, Matic, Pogba

    Rashford, Lukaku, Sanchez

I'd have Shaw and Fellani and the bench due to the injury niggles from the international break, while Rashford gets the nod due to his domestic suspension after a good brace of games for England.

Part of me is also tempted to try another Def Mid instead of Matic, in prep for the weekend. Under that scenario, I'd move Matic to CB instead of Lindelof and bring Perreira or Mctom into midfield

Considering the make up of our group, this is a must-win game.

be nice to see us really tear into this team and give some game time to Martial, Periera and Rashford - would love to see a strong counter attacking line-up like this

    ----------------------DDG-------------------
    Dalot-----Lindelof--Bailly--Shaw
    -------------------Matic-----------------
    -----------Fred-------Pogba------------
    Lingard----Rashford----Sanchez

reckon Lukaku plays though - Fellaini too though it might be better to have a more attacking player in his place

I’d love to see a goalfest for once. A classic Sir Alex trashing of the minnow team in the group stage from the noughties.

But you just know it’ll be a one goal winning margin at best, and we make them look so much better than they really are. Our star players will look like they’re playing with hangovers and their players run rings around them.

    DDG
    Valencia Smalling Lindelof Shaw
    Matic Fred
    Rashford Pogba Sanchez
    Lukaku

They will obviously sit back and defend so we need Fred's creativity in midfield more than the physical presence of Fellaini.

I have no idea why any fan can think of making an ”either/or” narrative for the PL and the CL. We have one of the most expensive squads in Europe. Its the managers and the players responsibility to see to it that we compete in every competition. Anything less is not acceptable.

Dalot to make his debut then? We could still see Young or Darmian there though.

Anyone know if they really play on a purely plastic pitch or if its one of the hybrid variants?

I can't believe we are getting fecked over this much in the US for the next 3 seasons. All my life i have had an abundance of Champions league football and now Turner Sports or what ever the feck they are called try to pick my pocket. I even read that they will have Steve Nash, a basketball player as a pundit. Devastated.

He's life long Tottenham supporter, and one of few basketball players I know that's really into football so it won't be like he's first time watching and trying to grasp what's happening on the field.
