Very sad. I did think it was something like this sadly. He's always on the bench, even when not playing, then suddenly he disappears for two extended periods of time with little explanation. Plus Ole never actually said he was injured, just that he'd be "away" for a few weeks.

Does anyone have a clue what's happened to him? All season long, even when he's gone longish periods without playing, he's been on the bench - even back when we only had 7 subs. Now 4 games in a row, he's nowhere to be seen. Like he's litetally vanished off the face of the Earth, no training...

Is he injured at the moment? Find it very odd that he hasn't made the squad two games in a row. Even when not playing, he's normally always on the bench.

Ighalo should have come on way earlier. Mata is a big part of the reason we won the Copenhagen game when he came on. Hell, even Lingard has scored recently, he could have offered something. To not bring a sub on till the 87th minute, 9 minutes after going behind, was absurd. I get that the...

People have very selective memories where Mata is concerned. Yes he's lost a fair bit of pace, and he was never pacey to begin with. But to say he only played well on Monday because Copenhagen were tired is a bit of a stretch. Before the break, he started most Europa League games and played fine...

I can kind of understand it (even though I agree Martial should be MOTM). Martial's level was better, but Mata changed the game.

Only just watched the LASK game (really wasn't in a rush to watch what was essentially a dead rubber) and reading this thread feels like I've slipped into a parrellel universe where nothing makes sense. Because no way was Mata's performance in that match anywhere near the car crash some of you...

I thought he was fine in that first half. Struggled with a few counters and wasn't involved hugely, but ultimately composed and passed well a few times in the final third. He certainly doesn't deserve the scapegoating he received in the match thread.

Not a bad first half at all. Don't see any real weak links, bar maybe Bailly and Rojo. Mata's been mostly fine, surprising some are scapegoating him for absolutely nothing.

Players being subbed off in the 2nd half doesn't automatically mean they've had a bad game. That's a ridiculous suggestion. Mata almost always gets subbed off - even during games where he's scored and played well. It's just the type of player he is. Substitutions in the 2nd half only sometimes...

Of course he'd be signed on a free! Jeez, what do you think he is, a league 2 level player? Believe it or not, he is still a quality player. Maybe he just really wanted to stay here? A rarity this days admittedly.
