AZ won 5-0 away against Astana. The group is virtually settled if we win tonight.

The international announcements don't reflect well on United
On the topic of the international break, Lindelof, McTominay, Rashford, Maguire, James and Rojo are the only players heading away for senior international duty for their nations, which is an incredibly low amount, given United tend to have the most representatives at major tournaments.

Solskjaer will view that as a plus but Pereira and Fred, recent regulars, have been overlooked by Brazil in favour of Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa and Lucas Paqueta of AC Milan. It does not reflect favourably on United, or their midfield malaise.

Hardly surprising given the state of our midfield.

Well, we better get the job done today. Really strong line-up, hoping for some good, positive football and Greenwood, Martial getting their names on the scoresheet.

We are in 10th in the league. Of course any game in the league at our current state is more important than a game in a group we have 7 points in already.
If we lose this match Partizan level us on points. If we win we are through and can afford to travel without a full squad all the way to Kazakhstan.

I also think that finishing top of the group is important because of seeding. Winning the EL is our only chance for getting into the CL next season whilst we're not going to do anything noteworthy in the league, maybe finish 6-7th.

And that's without mentioning that losing would be a really bad result for the manager and his job security.

Also I don't see why we can't play a strong team on a Thursday and again on Sunday with both of them being home games. After the Brighton match there's an international break and we only have 6 players called up.

Was not expecting such a strong line up. 6 out 11 on the line up prediction, worse one of the year.

Reads like he's giving a teamtalk to the under 10's.
"Come on,kids. Turn those frowns upside down and lets play some soccer!"

Edit: Maybe he is.Maybe he is.

Agreed! No idea why he went so strong, unless he just wants to make sure they finish the group off tonight.
This is the answer. We're finishing off the group stage so we can put it behind us, and use the last group stage game to give more kids a starting match.

The other answer is that we have a international break coming up, there is no big need to rest the players.

It's a well thought out player management. Williams is on the bench, will undoubtedly come on as a sub around the 65 minute mark, then start against Brighton.

This answers my questions about the strength of that starting XI.

    More from Solskjaer pre-match
    Speaking to BT Sport.

What response are you expecting from your team to go back top of the group tonight?

Hopefully we can put a good performance on and get a win. That will secure us to the next round and it just shows the result in Astana that Alkmaar are a good team.

    Strong team, why?

There’s a couple of reasons, we have a game on Sunday as well so I had these two in consideration when I was thinking about it but as you say experience is important we know a win is important for confidence and also to go through.

    Score more?

Of course I am confident (we can score more) we are have a talented players going forward, the foundation is there and we are defending well, but now it’s just that little spark we to see that tonight and we put quite a few goalscorers out there tonight so hopefully we can see some goals.

I guess our formation will be like this instead of shoehorning Mata to the right.

    -------------Romero
    ------Maguire---Rojo---Young
    AWB
    -------McTom------Fred
    ---------------Mata-----Rashford
    --Greenwood---Martial

That survey United voice ran that BT are currently discussing is telling, however sounds quite a small sample of fans considering how many OT holds, also what's the age split/ percentage season ticket holders etc.

Not sure if there is a link to it

If we win we are basically through so we can put out a pure second string team ... i guess is the thought process of Ole. Big game on Sunday though, if we lose again then we are facing relegation, oh how times have changed. Strongest line up against Parrizan who are probably no better than a league two team.

I've instantly got this weird image of Ole as Manchester United's equivalent of the Michelin Man.

7 of tonights team will likely start on Sunday would be 8 if young wasn't suspended.

Any decent team or a team in form would beat Partizan at least 4-0 at home but United at the moment are neither.

A 1-0 win looks more likely which will mean 3 points and into knock out stages with 2 games to spare and if that happens 2nd string sides must be picked in the remaining two games.

Scholes putting the boot into Woodward?
Not really, qualifying it with saying he's brilliant at the business side. It goes hand in hand, he's in all likelihood lost us more money than he's made through sponsorships (and tv money that was coming through no effort of his own).

Did you read the first two words?
Not trying to take the piss but there are plenty of examples where it’s not the case, Andy Cole, Carrick, Scholes, Saha, Cantona, De Gea etc.

I find a lot of international managers making decisions not because the options are bad but because they are looking for something specific. See France’s World Cup winning team with Giroud upfront instead of Benzema, Lacazette etc.

My worry tonight is about our midfield, hope we will not be overrun, hope Mata will have a good game tonight and not pushed back a lot, same for greenwood on the right hope he will not be forced out/outmuscled, otherwise a good lineup overall comon United!
