No idea what Villa's finances are but I would assume the new contract he signed 1 year ago may hold some agreement that would allow him to leave cheaper in certain "events" with relegation being the big one.

Regardless, Villa will struggle far more to persuade Grealish to give it 1-2 more years if they are in a league below, which will materially affect the price they would be reasonably expected to hold out for. I reckon you would be able to pick him up for 40m if they went down, which isn't far from the VdB figures touted. IF it were around that mark then sure it makes sense. He's a young English star whose resale value is more likely to be higher.

I would want VdB Over him anyday. Also get one of Partey or Ndidi and our midfield will be complete.

From what I’ve read about van de Beek, he seems like the kind of player Sir Alex would have had in his teams and would probably have racked up some serious silverware along the way, compared to Grealish who whilst gifted, doesn’t seem to possess that air of professionalism. I’ll never forget that photo of him fecking passed out drunk in the middle of a road in some Mediterranean resort, and then his lockdown breach.

Yes. And it's pretty Clear Ole is modelling himself on Sir Alex . VdB would be the better signing for me .

Cheaper. Better suited. Far more professional.

It’s a no brainier between VdB and Grealish.

I think its very difficult tbh. Mostly because of Graelish beiing PL proven. And yes, VdB has CL , but that was more or less a golden generation run in CL where everything just clicked.

So you’ll never forget a teenager getting drunk once, in the off season. He doesn’t have the air of professionalism yet all his so called transgressions have never happened during the season. He’s praised and loved by his coaches, teammates and fans for his hard work and leadership.

All this Fergie this and Fergie that are complete horseshit. Just about every single captain we ever had under Fergie had a drinking problem. Keane has talked about his alcohol abuse. Rooney was charged with drunk driving as well as countless other drunken occasions. Ferdinand has said he would drink 10 pints in a night and then move on to the vodka and when asked if he regrets anything in his career it was his drinking habit. Nani has said players would routinely turn up drunk to training every Christmas period and Ferguson wouldn’t care. So let’s cut the holier than thou bullshit and stop acting like Ferguson didn’t allow players to drink in the off season.

Is he better though? Not sure about that.

I guess it depends what you want out of your team but VDB is a box to box midfielder who chips in with goals, grealish is a winger/attacking midfielder who dribbles with the ball very well and also scores a few.

I’m not sure our interest in DVB was ever genuine, we seem to get linked all the time and it’s mainly by agents trying to get him a move away somewhere.

I wouldn't say so, no. I think the only advantage VDB has is that he can play as a 10 and 8, meaning he could be back up for Bruno and Pogba. Sort of like Gundogan for City. If rumours are to be believed, then he will take up the squad place of Pereira/Lingard.

This is incredible!
A Premier league footballer could have a fulltime Chauffeur and we are comparing his actions to something we might have done when we were younger.

Absolutely convinced Ole has no plans to bring in a DM like those you mentioned.

Reckon the plan is for Garner & Mejbri to be eased into the team over the next couple of years with a view to take over Matic.

Despite Grealish's off field antics there is something telling me he was made to play for this club.

Great point.

I have been debating a similar scenario with another poster in regards to Sancho on his player thread.

I think our club must be weary and cautious when signing players who have had disciplinary issues.

Coming to United will only boost their egos higher and that will definitely impact the culture that Ole is trying to bring back.

As much as I’d love to see these players sign for us, we don’t want to get embroiled in off field issues with these players once we’ve signed them. We must ensure that their behaviour has improved.

I also agree with your point about Grealish losing his focus when he’s not playing week in week out. Unless he’ll be given assurances that that will not be the case (If he ends up replacing Pogba).
Exactly why I think we should sign Van De Beek. No displaniry issues in the past I can think of and is more in line with the culture Ole is trying to build. Plus he is a better player. I can see Jack Grealish being a disaster and despite what some people say, he wouldn't make into a top four side.

Well to be fair those players that Sir Alex signed had the potential to be world class and one of the best in their respective position. In comparison Jack Grealish doesn't. Won't even come close so ain't worth it. I don't have a problem with signing English players as I think Jadon Sancho can potentially be one of the best right wingers in the world. So sign him up. Jack Grealish is the very case of an overhyped British talent.

Can see Grealish receiving the ball on the right wing before busting into the right half space doing a give and go with Fernandes before it cutting it back to Pogba .....chooo chooo

I think you're doing a great disservice to the ability of Jack Grealish. And I don't think he's anymore hyped than any other player 'plying their trade elsewhere in a different league in Europe. The only issue I have with signing him is where we fit him in to the team. With Havertz I see him fit like a glove as a false #9 but with Grealish his best roles are occupied by nailed on first team players. But if Ole decides to sign him then i'd be happy because he's a talented player and it would make us stronger squad wise.

It’s about context of the drinking.

“Grealish drove drunk during a national crisis and went to party with his mate because he was bored. Marcus Rashford at a younger age during that same time frame helped push a foundation feeding children in need.”

Rashford has since today openly sought to engage with the government to improve the lives of those in greatest need. This has been done in his downtime.

Whenever Jack has downtime he does something stupid; being sub at United he won’t be playing week in week out.

Do you not see the gaping difference?

The difference is that if Sancho is too expensive as seems the case, Grealish can play on the right wing as he's played often as a winger for Villa.

I wouldn't bet against both of them arriving in the transfer window. VDB can play a number of roles also but perhaps would be rotated with Matic and Fred, and Grealish could be rotated with Bruno as a no. 10 and also Chong and James on the wing.

When has he played RW?

I count one performance
20/09/14 - Arsenal - 45mins as a sub for Weimann.

Correction he`s often played as a LEFT WINGER for Villa. He`s not once played as a RW this season so it`s pointless using him in a role he`s not specialized in.

Things like this always make me laugh, it's like asking Rashford/Martial to play on the right.

Sure they can stand there but will they be effective? the reason they play on the left is to cut in on their stronger foot and shoot or cross.

Unless they go floating into the middle of the pitch but all that does is crowd out the space and make it harder for Bruno. No surprise we've looked better as a team overall attacking wise with James keeping the width more on the right side.

Jack Grealish RW data:
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jac...&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=12&trainer_id=

And to give him a chance RM data:
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jac...=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=8&trainer_id=

So let’s combine those two and see how often and at what level he played RM/RW

PL - 1 44min performance in 14/15 season
Championship - 1 90min performance 18/19 season
League One - 7 RW 3RM @Notts County in 13/14 season 799mins total

So including RM he has 12 appearances 10/12 of which came 6 years ago in league 1.

He has 1 goal and 2 assists all from league one.

But yeah he’d be great at RW...

Well to be honest, I prefer Grealish to VDB if we can manage him well and ensure his past behaviour doesn’t become repetitive.

Sure Grealish attracts negative attention due to his disciplinary issues, but he’s still a bigger talent as compared to VDB.

Premier league proven, avoids frequent injuries, has leadership qualities, all apart from his skills and talent.
If I’m not wrong, he can also play more positions than VDB. He’s played as a CM, AM & on the wing for Villa.
VDB will only be useful in the midfield.

But for me price is a huge driving factor during this pandemic. If Villa get relegated, and we can get Grealish around the same price as VDB, then he’s totally my preferred option. VDB only if Grealish is too expensive.

On a side note, you really don’t believe Grealish has the caliber to play in a top 4 side?
Even with Villa playing so poorly, Grealish has thrived in the PL.
One of my favourite and most reliable picks in my fantasy team this season! :D

Many people struggle to evaluate a talent on individual ability alone, you only have to look back at how he played against us at Old Trafford to see what quality he has.

He's been doing that all season for Villa in a team that really lacks any flair or talent away from Mcginn who was out with a broken ankle for a long while.

Totally agree!

If you scroll through these last couple pages of this thread you’ll find me mentioning his performance against us at our home ground as well!

His goal was exquisite and his composure & confidence in making that shot showed me that he’s a big team player capable of constantly showing up in the big games.

For us it would be fantastic to see a player settle in right away instead of taking risks. Sure VDB is a huge talent but if asked to compare, I’m sure most of us would bet on Grealish settling in sooner than VDB.

We only need to look back to our most recent signings. Maguire & AWB were ready from the get go since they had already been playing in the PL.

I think it is unfair for anyone to say he’s not talented. He’s a very good ball carrier and does well in his big fish small pond role at Villa where he is the main man. He’s not prolific but it’s hard for him to be when he’s arguably the creator of the side and I don’t know if you’ve ever tried setting yourself up but it’s not easy!

He clearly has on field skills from LW given a little more space (before he gets swamped by defenders) and creative freedom but he suffers more when moved centrally into CAM (he rarely ever plays CM so yes I’m dismissing that).

If you could separate the personality and the issues from the player he would be a good signing for ~£40m but unfortunately you can’t and as much as I admire his footballing ability I think mentally he is not ready to be second fiddle on the bench having to work for a starting XI spot.

He's also been carrying the weight of being a Villa fan and captain from a young age, they rely on him so much.

The moment I knew he "had it" was the Birmingham derby when the fan ran on the pitch and punched him. Instead of disappearing and being scared he took the game to them and scored the winner. He's maybe spent a bit too long at Villa for his own good and now he's 25 he needs to take the next step - and Villa need to let him do that which I think they will if they get a fair price.

Marcus Rashford never played for Ferguson. Grealish does loads of charity in Birmingham anyway.

Grealish went outside during lockdown along with 20+ other PL footballers and tens of thousands of other civilians.

Grealish was involved in what police called a minor incident. It hasn’t been proved he was even the one driving the car. And he’s been charged with nothing. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney was charged and convicted of driving impaired, in the middle of the season. Do you see the gaping difference?

Last I checked he had played 12 games as a CM for Villa in his last 50 games.
Which is more than the number of games he’s played as a CAM (11) or LF (8) during those 50 games. Please correct me if my source is wrong.
But I agree, he plays best in attacking roles.

I do however believe that he’ll be happy with the game time he’ll receive. We play a huge number of games and he’ll hardly ever have to play second fiddle.
He’ll also provide competition for starting spots which will keep our other players on their toes which is necessary at the moment.

Also - if we do end up buying Grealish, and we can replace him with two outgoing players, that will itself make up for playing time. Lingard and Pereira have been able to play way too many minutes for my liking.

I also wouldn’t mind taking a risk on buying him keeping his past discretions in mind, if he only ends up costing around the £40m mark. He’ll still have huge resale value for a few years to come and we can easily recoup that amount or a tad bit more if we want to get rid of him.
But I think he’ll mature with time and become more responsible and become a huge squad player for us.

Yeah I think Villa asked him to stay an extra year since they had qualified for the PL (There was demand for him last summer as well).
To play in the PL probably would’ve been his first priority for the current season which he has been able to do.

At 25, Villa will definitely want him to go on and achieve his career goals if they get relegated.

My only worry is that if he does become available, there may be a bidding war for him between numerous PL clubs.
I easily see clubs like Leicester, Arsenal, Spurs and maybe even City (If sane leaves) getting involved. Maybe even Everton.

So getting him at the £40m mark will be tough to say the least unless he makes it clear that he only wants to join us.

The one thing I like most about Grealish is that he’ll provide decent cover for Rashford on the left wing, Bruno in the middle or Pogba at #8 if any of them gets injured or needs rest.
He can also play on the left wing when Rashford is playing as a striker and provide cover for Martial in some ways.

I think Ole also likes this fact and that is why we seem so genuinely interested in him.

To have another creative player of such caliber will allow Ole to rest the aforementioned players more frequently whereby also guaranteeing Grealish gets sufficient game time for his liking.

I’m expecting Pogba to leave in 2021 summer. Grealish won’t fill that void. We’d need a CM.
Marcus Rashford never played for Ferguson. Grealish does loads of charity in Birmingham anyway.

What’s Ferguson got to do with anything I’ve said?

Rashford has been a shining example do everything you’d want in terms of character and ability.

People see a bit of talent and are willing to be blinkered and excuse any behaviour even that which endangers life.

He went to get pissed at his mates because he was bored. I don’t care who else got involved were not trying to sign the other players and the idiots who felt entitled enough to go against life saving advice.

Drink driving is a minor offence in the eyes of the law as was lockdown breach so of course that’s how it’ll be described.

Grealish decided in a time when the whole country was told to make a sacrifice that his own entertainment was of greater importance than spreading an unprecedented life threatening disease. And you think he’s got a good team mentality?

Rashford looked outward at what he could do for others to help. Grealish only inward for what he could do for himself.

Grealish does token gestures like most in his position. The vast majority of charity work is put on by the club for him to attend.

I’m not defending Wayne Rooney at all and so it’s irrelevant to the discussion. The only difference is Rooney did that whilst at the club.

I think your source is wrong.

Grealishs last CM performance was 22/9/19 against Arsenal. He’s only had 6 CM performances in the PL Villa lost 4 drew 1 and won 1 in that time.

He played CAM in the championship last season 27 times (including 2 play off performances) he played CM 3 times including a play off game.

I will stand by my view he is not a CM. LW/LAM yes. CM no. And I absolutely believe he’s a very good LW cutting inside and a decent CAM certainly better than what Lingard or Pereira could offer us. I would love to have Grealish if you could guarantee the right attitude from him but for £40m+ (and I’m trying to be conservative with the price as the reported £75m is a joke) he’d be a great addition.

But I honestly have absolutely no belief that 24/25yr old Jack will behave any better than he has recently and knowing what I do I don’t see his behaviour ever really changing despite his supportive family and background. It’s not like he’s a teenager new to football and the scrutiny anymore. It’s not like he doesn’t get great support and advice from people close to him who care. He’s a young man now and of course like all young men he’ll make mistakes but he keeps making them and this last one for me was the final nail.

I also think signing him is in complete confliction with Ole’s “Id rather have a hole than an arsehole”. His words not mine.

What does your ramblings about Rashford have anything to do with what I said?

Don’t jump into posts about Ferguson’s standards with some rambling about Rashford and then talk about irrelevancy. As your entire post is.

It wasn’t described as drink driving at all as he hasnt been charged for drink driving.
