Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

They've incurred significant losses because of the pandemic, but they were debt free before that. Most clubs have debts, so I don't think they're in as problematic a position as made out to be. As far as I know they've been quite risk averse since their near bankruptcy in the early 2000s, hence they've generally been reluctant to take on loans and spend more than they earn but this isn't a normal situation and they do have access to funding. They probably won't be able to buy players unless they sell others, but if Sancho actually wants to stay I doubt that's a problem, especially if they make top 4.
Isn't that the crux of the problem? They've posted consistent financial losses, they've struggled massively this season and look to be just scraping into CL places and won't be able to shore up the squad without selling one of Haaland or Sancho. Add to the fact that Sancho only has two years left on his contract and it's now or never for them to cash in. Absolutely zero chance Sancho extends his contract. It doesn't make any sense for him to do so.

I really can't wrap my head around this. When there is someone better than Rashford, that someone has to play instead of him. Do you want to win titles, or do you want to become a "let's have a good time" irrelevant club? It is worrying if this kind of mindset exists at arguably still the biggest club in England. United should be all about winning as many titles as possible, not about not upsetting some fan favourites by replacing them with someone better. That mindset is for clubs like Arsenal, not for the real elite.

Different kinds of players who'll end up playing in different positions in a few years.

For me Greenwood isn't a RW and that won't be his position in the future but Sancho is a RW and will play there in the future. Greenwood for me hasn't got the skillset for a winger, he hasn't learnt how to take a man on 1vs1 whilst out on the wing and hasn't got that explosive pace to get past them, Sancho has but hasn't got the finishing ability like Greenwood. If he can master the art of movement learning from Cavani then he'll be absolutely deadly.

With how many games we play a season, Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford, Cavani would all play plenty of games.
I’m not sure about this general assumption that Greenwood will become a “CF”, in the traditional sense.

Yes, he’s definitely a goalscorer and I’m sure a player of his talent can thrive in any of the forward positions, but is he really BEST suited to playing with his back to goal? Furthermore, by his own admission (and Ole agrees) he isn’t that good in the air.

For me, I would always want my CF to be the one doing the donkey work. Occupying CBs. Battling with CBs. Making run after run after run in behind, even if the ball isn’t coming. Playing with his back to goal.

None of these things suit Greenwood’s biggest skillsets for me. I would always want Greenwood playing off a flank, because he has the rare ability of being able to go either side. We shouldn’t lose sight of how useful that can be.

They rightfully do so I think. Over the last three seasons overall the best winger in the league (because he is way more consistent then wingers Bayern have and that despite his young age).

I agree. But that's what I think will happen we'd rather shoe horn an injured Rashford on the right when Greenwood is clearly the better player there. We play Rashford when he's carrying an injury in less important games. If we get Sancho I just don't see Rashford becoming a bench player. He'd probably be rotated more though. Then of course my assumptions can be totally wrong

Jesus, Sterling, Mahrez, Torres, Foden, Silva.

Werner, Ziyech, Pulisic, Mount, Haverts, Abraham, Giroud.

Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota, OrigI.

Cavani, Rashford, Martial, Greenwood... Sancho.

Look at the attacking strength of our closest rivals.

Signing Sancho is an absolute no brainer in my mind. We’d go from having a very strong front line to arguably having the strongest attacking squad in the PL.

This is the worry for most people against Sancho. If this happens I'm positive Ole will rotate Pogba in the left midfield role and double pivot. Rashford is too much of a favourite to become a squad option whether Pogba is better at the left or not
Rashford offers something that others dont. Hes the entire reason why our fast break reputation exists because i dont see Mason, Cavani or Bruno getting behind the opposition all that much.

I do agree with most of what you're saying but I think Greenwood is too segregated on the wing, he's only returned 6 PL goals this season in 26 games off the wing, think he's scored 4 in his last 4. If he's playing on the wing it needs to be him tucking inside and getting closer to goal, which we've seemed to swapped him back to doing the last few weeks/months.

I think as he grows into his body as his still very slight, he'll be able to handle moving defenders about and battling with them.

I do think Sancho would take our attack up another level, he's brilliant on the counter with his pace or at close quarters with being a man 1vs1. He can play each wing and has also played off the striker for Dortmund so brings a lot of versatility with his class.

It's possible but I wouldn't put their problems this season simply down to their squad as such. Lots of players out of form, injuries and coaching all add up to it, but it's not really that necessary to bring in players if the underperforming players step up next season. They're bringing in a promising coach next season, so the expectation is that the team will improve regardless of the squad improving. In most positions they have enough depth, but if they want to improve in some positions they need to sell the relevant players first of all. That could be Schulz at LB, constantly injured Zagadou at CB, Burki in goal, Meunier at Rb, possibly Witsel or Delaney in CM. So even if they had money it wouldn't make sense to buy players without offloading others first.

I doubt the losses need to be offset immediately, most likely they'll be covered over the course of several years anyway. We already know they'll sell if the right offer comes in, but if no offer comes close or Sancho doesn't want to leave this year I'm pretty sure they'll be fine. I disagree that it's now or never to cash in, even with just a year left on his contract they could demand a significant amount. If anything next season there would likely be more clubs in for him than this summer.

Entire reason? How is one man capable of being responsible for a counter attack. Martial Fred Pogba Bruno Greenwood are usually involved.

Even with Pogba on the left Rashford remains first choice playing ST or RW. It's easy to bench Cavani or Greenwood for Rashford even though they are more effective in those positions because one is old and the other is young so they can't play all the time. But when Martial comes back and Sancho comes in, if everybody is fit he isn't going to be favoured for ST or RW. Asides injuries there's simply no point playing him in those positions when Cavani, Martial at ST and Sancho, Greenwood at RW are better. The choice becomes he battles the Lw position with Pogba(if we make LW Pogba's permanent position) or he goes back to LW and Pogba goes back to the double pivot in certain games.

Because nobody else plays off the shoulder like Rashford can. He basically is our entire pace on the counter. He has the best out to in runs in the entire league imo.
Theres a reason why Ole wont rest Rashford and its not because his attributes are bettered by everybody else.

This is a fair accessment to be honest though Bruno tends to keep up with him very often. Now if Sancho joins in the fun too next season

This is better than when you said he's our entire counter attack. Its not often a team counters in a game though especially us. Last game against Aston Villa he couldn't do anything at ST as there wasn't enough space for example. He's played there against Newcastle and wrecked havoc due to the space they gave us. So while his attribute of running behind the defense is arguably the best in our team its not often he is allowed to do that. I'd pick Greenwood over Rashford at RW easily.

In the end id say why Ole picks him is a mixture of favouritism, tactics and the fact that Rashford can always make something happen no matter how bad he's playing

The bolded players don't exactly strengthen their attack, you might as well list Dan James for us if that's the case.

Our counter are basically pass it to Bruno who sweeps a ball to our left side. Who else even gets to a 1v 1 situation in our side if its not Marcus? When we counter its all through Rashford.

Maybe if Dan James was our leading scorer

Nothing wrong with the Abraham inclusion
Sorry but Abraham is a striker not a winger like James, Abraham has 6 league goals in 22 matches and the only goals he has scored for Chelsea in all competitions since December were against Luton. So from that basis my point stands.

See? Playing as well as he does on the right but he'll get dropped next game and we wont see a sustained run because nobody else can play as well as he does out there.
He's playing well tbf. I'd like him to develop in that role for a Rashford Greenwood Sancho front three . This is the best he's ever played there

Although I don’t disagree with your point (Origi is atrocious!), Abraham is still the joint top scorer for Chelski this season.
All that does is tell you how bad Chelsea's attackers have been this season. He has scored 12 goals in all competitions, Chelsea have played 54 games so far this season and their top scorer has 12 goals, that is absolutely tragic.

Rashford / Greenwood / Amad / Pellestri

Blow most of the budget to get him ?

No thanks

Spent half of it on Bissouma / Ndidi

Having watched his performances for England, I must admit I don’t know what the fuss is about.
He’s average at best. No better than players like Grealish or Maddison.
Not as good as Mount. Certainly not worth the money they want.

Crazy the confidence needed to call someone 'average at best' after admitting that you've only watched maybe 3 or 4 matches of him in a completely different set up  :houllier:

Bruno has only scored twice for Portugal, last of which came in 2019. What a bum that guy is...

Thought I was in the VdB thread reading how average he is.
He is obviously a great talent and would add a lot to our team. He would also fit in well with our other attackers as well as our English players.
It is true that he is slightly overrated in terms of his numbers. He will not reach those in the Premier League. But he does not need to. We have other players with very good stats as well so he will not be carrying all the attacking burden. However he will give us goals, additional creativity and a quality rotation option.

is he worth 100m, no.......but he's clearly the guy we need to sign the most right now given our attacking options

Cavani and Greenwood or Martial(if he's not sold) can lead the line but we don't ahve a right footed player on the right at all. It gives us a lot more balance to put a guy out there that put a ball into the box for Cavani but Sancho is just as capable on the dribble.
