His contract is until 2023, with an option for another year (I presume it's a club option).

With Martinez almost done, Jones will either leave this summer or next summer on a free.

If any club is seriously interested in him, I hope the club waives any transfer fee and allow him to leave.

He really should count himself lucky.

A crocked race-horse wouldn’t trouser millions of pounds a year and get to send his horsey-children to the best schools, whilst living the life of luxury in the treatment rooms. It would be a far worse fate….think about that, Phil

Hope he goes finally but assume it will be next summer as we all know he likes getting paid.

The fact he’s linked to the MLS after playing 10 straight years of benchwarmer for us is actually quite embarrassing for a professional.

Where was the professional pride to move on and prove himself in first team football?

Exactly the worst kind of player to sign.

The day he signed for us his football journey was over basically.

That's ridiculous. Guy played in CL knockout games, won a league title and a European trophy and played under the best manager the club has ever had.

Complete hogwash.

The day his top flight football career died is the day his knee gave out

There's no real advantage for Jonesy moving this summer is there really.

At best it'd be a deal where we have to foot the bill for a huge % of the wage, and anywhere he goes will be a step down in facilities, medical stuff etc.
We've struggled to keep him fit for goodness sake, imagine going down to some mid table championship team.

Isn't he fit at the moment? I assumed since the Wolves game he's been available. He can't stay at United and pass up the opportunity to actually play football out of fear he might get injured and won't have United's facilities on hand. For his own mental health being selected and featuring appears to be massively important, so fair play to him. It's time to give it a shot elsewhere.

He had a chance to go on loan and play football in France for half a year but he rejected it and chose to spend his time in the training ground/physio room/wherever. Will most likely do the same to DC United because why wouldn't he, now he earns money doing pretty much feck all and will surely get a new contract offer from us soon enough.

Mengi, Tuanzebe aren't really first team quality, so it's strange to include them in your list. Jones is perma-injured, so no serious club would consider him even a fallback option.

Realistically, we have Martinez, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly.

I think we'll end up selling one (probably Bailly).

4 senior CBs is pretty standard.

The more logical criticism is we spend more money in wages at CB than basically any other team: Varane 250k, Maguire 180k, Lindelof 120k, Martinez 120k = 570k p/w in CB wages. City on the other hand have Stones (250k), Laporte (120k), Dias (120k), Ake (90k) = 480k p/w in CB wages.

Is his new contract the worst one in PL history?

I don’t know why we did it generally. But why a long term contract?

Really really weird. He’s basically gone 10 years without playing football

No, he did not. He had a chance to go to France and warm the bench. Why the feck would he go all the way there for half a season with a low chance of playing.

This has to be one of the worst threads on the cad.

How do you know this? Should any player ever be guaranteed to be a starter?

Warm the bench at the worst team in Ligue 1who were leaking goals for fun? What is Jones's level then if he can't get into this kind of team? How is this guy still here is unexplainable.

When was that 2014? After that Madrid game? Done sod all ever since.

He won the Europa League at the biggest club on the planet as a sub. Well done.

I've never understood the hate for him.
Hes been incredibly unlucky with injuries he always gave absolutely everything for Utd when he played.
I hope he gets a fresh start somewhere and actually gets to play some football.
There have been plenty of players in recent years who have stole a living at utd Jones isn't one of them.

Let’s look at your sentence

“his career ended the day he joined United”

The same way that you know he was offered a loan move...

Blame Woodward and Ole, not the player.

I think the hate is frustration of watching a player that never contributes on the pitch, that is just a name on the books for year after year. Its because of a stupid policy of giving new contracts to fringe players to prevent losing them on a free. Hopefully that policy is now over with all the players that left on a free this summer.

Jones was once a great prospect and its a shame to see how his career is turning out to be influenced by injuries. It doesn't help him that he plays for one of the biggest clubs in the world where the spotlight is always on you.

It would be great if he could get his health right and find a lower table PL team, and get 3-5 seasons of football before he hangs up his boots.

Extending his contract is one of the worst pieces of business I've ever seen from a club of our size. It made no sense at the time and looks just as stupid now.

It seems he isn't attracting suitors and is paid handsomely at United. For his sake and United's, I really hope he leaves this summer and that will help trim a massive wage bill. I'd honestly waive a transfer fee like Arsenal did with Willian and Aubameyang just to get rid if possible because there's literally no benefit in him staying here. I mean he didn't even make the pre season trip ffs.

I get really frustrated by players on big wages with minimal contribution. Pay as you play should be used more often. Or variable salary based on official match ratings.

I think he'll just retire at the end of his contract

He's permainjured, he would be better off trying to get coaching lessons from Hag, Gaag and McClaag.

I recall two games where he played last season and he was decent, then never appeared again. I’m not saying he should be getting another shot here, but surely there’s still some sort of player in him, either for the championship or a lesser league.
